Goldberger's War: The Life and Work of a Public Health Crusader, by Alan M. Kraut

Goldberger's War chronicles one of the U.S. Public Health Service's most renowned heroes--an immigrant Jew who trained as a doctor at Bellevue, became a young recruit to the federal government's health service, and ended an American plague. He did so by defying conventional wisdom, experimenting on humans, and telling the South precisely what it didn't want to hear.

From Publishers Weekly
The title in this fascinating history refers not to any military battle, but to a doctor's successful fight against the disease known as pellagra. Until Joseph Goldberger proved otherwise in the early 20th century, the illness, a scourge of the South, was believed to be an infectious disease. Goldberger's diligent research and tireless campaigning demonstrated that it was, in fact, due to dietary deficiencies. (Later researchers showed that pellagra resulted from a lack of niacin.) Using both primary and secondary documents, Kraut, a professor of history at American University, traces Goldberger's life from his late-19th-century childhood on the Lower East Side of New York City to his rise through the U.S. Public Health Service. This story follows an immigrant's rise in America, but in Kraut's hands, it is more than just a biography; it is also a history of science. Kraut shows how Goldberger worked to push for the eradication of the disease-even using radical methods, such as injecting forms of the disease into himself, his wife and other subjects. Kraut also subtly demonstrates how such factors as religion, class and regionalism played themselves out in Goldberger's life. The son of Orthodox Jews, Goldberger married the grandniece of Confederate leader Jefferson Davis, but not before both families struggled with the intermarriage. And as Kraut shows in this engaging and multilayered American history, much of the fight against Goldberger's findings came from Southerners who were concerned that his work would reinforce the region's image as backward.

From The New England Journal of Medicine
Goldberger's War opens in 1916, as Joseph Goldberger injects his wife with blood taken from patients with advanced pellagra. As the vignette suggests, historian Alan Kraut's engaging biography is about a bold medical investigator, an inexplicable disease, human experimentation, and an unusual marriage. (Figure) In 1874 Joseph Goldberger and his family left Hungary for New York City. His father ran a grocery store on the Lower East Side, and the son studied medicine at Bellevue Hospital's Medical College, graduating in 1895. Goldberger's limited means and his identity as a Jewish immigrant led to his rejection by the U.S. Navy Medical Corps, which he tried to join at the start of the Spanish-American War. In 1899 Goldberger entered the Public Health Service, in which he spent the rest of his professional life, attracted by both the regular government salary and the opportunities for scientific investigation in the laboratory and in the field. While holding his first position, as a quarantine officer, he was introduced by a fellow physician to Mary Humphreys Farrar of New Orleans. Her father, a wealthy Episcopalian lawyer, conducted an investigation of the Goldberger family before reluctantly agreeing to the marriage of Joseph and Mary in 1906. The young couple struggled to create a happy, mixed-faith family. For Joseph, Kraut argues, the Public Health Service's Hygienic Laboratory "would become his temple," but for Mary, his constant traveling left her too often as the sole parent of four rambunctious children. And his work could be dangerous: Goldberger contracted yellow fever in 1902, dengue fever in 1907, and typhus in 1910. To Mary he admitted "a certain pride in my `battle' scars . . . received in the line of duty for my country." In the early 20th century, the Public Health Service offered its officers an exciting new job as physician-investigators on "search and destroy" missions, calming a hysterical public, confronting the skeptical with technological expertise, and saving the day with scientifically sound solutions. The work was not always so simple, however, as Goldberger discovered when he began to argue that pellagra -- a major health problem in the South with an associated mortality rate of around one in three -- was caused not by a germ but by a nutritional deficiency. Drawing on histories by Elizabeth W. Etheridge and Daphne A. Roe, as well as on letters between Goldberger and his wife, Goldberger's published work, and an interview with Goldberger's son, Joseph Herman Goldberger, Kraut traces Goldberger's efforts to convince the medical profession and the public of his theory. At that time, the germ theory had made environmental explanations sound old-fashioned and unscientific. White Southerners, angry at this attack on their region and on the "three-m" diet of the rural poor (meat, meal, and molasses), retorted that pellagra was a "germ" disease, thus one that could easily be fixed by some kind of sanitary measure. Black physicians, conscious that deficiency diseases were frequently blamed on ignorant, lazy, and thriftless black persons, also argued that pellagra was "communicable," that perhaps, like yellow fever, it was spread by insects. Impressed by suspicious evidence that pellagra appeared in state institutions among inmates but never among their keepers, Goldberger tried to undermine theories of bacterial infection by organizing "filth parties," during which he, his wife, and 14 volunteers took pellagra "pills" and were injected with pellagra-contaminated blood. I wish Kraut had speculated further and explored Goldberger's attraction to an explanation for pellagra based on nutrition. Certainly his sharp eyes, trained to detect diseases caused by germs and insects, could "sweep away" other explanations. Or perhaps Goldberger's assumption that milk and other "animal proteins" were the solution may have reflected the effect of the powerful advertising campaigns conducted by the dairy industry in the popular and medical press (to counter the many times milk was blamed for outbreaks of typhoid fever and tuberculosis) -- a kind of early 20th-century version of "Got Milk?" A more troubling side of Goldberger's efforts to prove that pellagra could be explained by diet, not germs, was his experimentation for over a decade on human subjects who were in orphanages, prisons, and asylums. Kraut admits that the mentally ill black women at the Georgia state asylum who were Goldberger's subjects from 1915 to 1926 "had little choice about whether they would participate," but he has restricted what should have been an extensive bioethical discussion of these experiments to a brief footnote. For Goldberger, the solution to pellagra was a political morass that defeated him. The detailed epidemiologic study of seven mill towns in South Carolina that he conducted with statistician Edgar Sydenstricker, also in the Public Health Service, showed the complex social and economic factors that underlay the Southern agricultural economy and shaped what people ate and why they got sick. By the mid-1920s, although Goldberger acknowledged that "the problem of pellagra is in the main a problem of poverty," he concluded that bold structural solutions such as food cooperatives and community dairies would not "conform to local conditions" and retreated to the relative serenity of the laboratory to try to find a specific "pellagra-preventive." Mary Goldberger lobbied Congress to establish the National Institute of Health. In 1927, when a massive pellagra outbreak threatened after floods on the Mississippi River, the Red Cross, advised by Goldberger, developed a "moderate" solution -- education about nutrition and handouts of canned vegetables, brewer's yeast, and even some cows. Nominated five times for the Nobel Prize, Goldberger died in 1929 amid odd rumors that the cause of his death was not kidney cancer but pellagra. His wife received a $125-a-month pension thanks to a special congressional bill that recognized the value of Goldberger's work. In the 1930s niacin deficiency was identified as the specific cause of pellagra, although the Southern Medical Association continued to honor researchers who demonstrated the pellagra "virus." The disease ceased to be an important American health problem as a result of the expanded use of home refrigerators, made possible by the New Deal's electrification programs, and the government-mandated vitamin enrichment of bread and flour that was introduced during World War II. In this century, however, pellagra continues to threaten communities in the Third World whose food supply is disrupted by civil war. "Goldberger's war never really ends," Kraut concludes. "We just send in fresh troops." In this engrossing story of an American medical hero whose work and life illustrate the intertwining of medical, social, and political history, Kraut shows us that the research and practice of physicians can help to explain how people become sick, but that especially for diseases for which there are no vaccines, prevention and treatment must involve a conscious reorganization of the ways people live and of the social and economic factors that shape their choices. From Booklist
At the turn of the twentieth century, the American South was plagued by pellagra, a disease characterized by dermatitis, diarrhea, dementia, and death. In 1912, South Carolina alone reported some 30,000 cases, with a 40 percent fatality rate. Of unknown etiology, pellagra had public-health officials stymied. Enter Joseph Goldberger. In 1914, this public-health physician was assigned the task of finding the cause and cure for what had come to be called "the scourge of the South." In this biography, substantially documented from Goldberger's personal and professional correspondence, Kraut recounts how the idealistic physician faced down several dread diseases while tackling the politics of public health. Often becoming a willing subject of his experiments, he put his life at risk as bravely as any infantryman, contracting three of the sometimes-fatal ailments he sought to cure, including typhus and yellow fever. His is the inspiring story of a man who confronted the grim reality of infectious disease in pursuit of a healthier future for America. Donna Chavez

A Fine Bio of a True American Hero
By A Southern Reader
Joseph Goldberger is a true American hero. He was a US PHS officer who devoted his life to combating various infectious and communicable diseases. However, his biggest triumph was in determining that pellagra, a disease you never hear of any more but in the 19th and early 20th century took the lives of thousands, was caused by a dietic deficiency not a germ or virus. Pellagra was especially prevalent in the US southeast where poor sharecroppers and mill workers often were the victims. The book is very well written and addresses the medical mysteries and the social barriers to implementing Goldberger's suggestions. Alan Kraut has done a real service in preserivng Godlberg's life and work in the book. I think the book will be enjoyed
by those who like biographies and medical mysteries.

A very good read.
By A. Wozniak
The book is well written, very interesting, and easy for a lay person to understand. If you like to read medical history books and don't remember or know about the achievements of Joseph Goldberger, then you should read this book. The book would be a good Christmas or birthday present.

From Publishers Weekly
A social historian who has written previously about leisure and technology, Kasson ( Amusing the Millionssingular is correct? : Coney Island at the Turn of the Century ) here interprets the development of middle-class manners in an insightful essay on conduct, culture and consciousness. He examines the transformation of our notion of "gentility" from the period before the American Revolution, when it seemed a birthright to some, until the early 20th century, when the term, he argues, came to suggest habits of "excessive conventionality" and "false delicacy." In the intervening years, politeness epitomized an ideal of public and private control, which the author explores in the advice of etiquette manuals, illustrations from period advertisements and excerpts from diaries, novels, autobiographies and travel sketches detailing American daily life. Kasson's close readings are generally most illuminating when he sticks to standard texts such as Edgar Allen Poe's story "The Man of the Crowd" and Herman Melville's "Bartleby, comma is correct?/correct the Scrivener"; a few more inventive intellectual exertions, like his reconsideration of the Last Supper in the context of Victorian dining ideals, take him somewhat far afield.

From Library Journal
Kasson contends that the 19th century was an important era in the development of standards of public decorum as we know them in 20th-century America. In areas as diverse as artistic performances, gender relationships, and dining, he examines how earlier models for personal behavior became increasingly unworkable. Economic change in the 19th century led to a growing middle class capable of participating in social activities previously reserved for a small upper class, and to the growth of cities where many people were brought into close contact. Social commentators believed it essential to improve the manners of the 19th-century middle class. Kasson's book is heavy going initially, and one wishes his earlier chapters had the focus and wit of the later ones on emotional control, table manners, and public spectatorship. But for persevering readers this can be a rewarding book. For academic and larger public libraries.

Disagreement with the 3-star reader (I liked it)
By Felicity
John F. Kasson is not about how idosyncratic Victorian Americans were but about us in the contemporary world. It all depends on what you are looking for of course, but I found this book accessible, informative, and well written. It is a great introductory book for those who have never thought about these things, which is , in my view, the case for most of us.

A Good History on the History of Politeness
By Lionel S. Taylor
This book traces the history of manners in the U.S. and in many ways as the book makes clear this is really a history of the rise of the middle class in this country and its efforts to distinguish itself from the lower classes and rural farmers. This is also a history of the growing material culture in the United States and how that in conjunction with the rise of middle class self consciousness prompted a growing industry of books about how one presented oneself to the wider world. This is an academic book but it is not dull by any means. The author does a good job of dividing the different types of manners into way that one body and manners were controlled in public. The book also makes the point that this quest for refinement continues to this day with the focus now being more on the internal character and self improvement just as much as public improvement. This book will appeal to anyone interested in manner of just how people behaved in the 19th century and what was considered good and bad behavior in pubic. As one reviewer has already pointed out it is not popular history but it is still a book that someone with a general interest in history would find interesting.

Outstanding explanation personality types in spiritual terms
By A Customer
This book presents an outstanding understanding of the personality types including psychosocial development. It correlates Jungian personality types (and Meyers-Briggs Type Indicators) to a spiritual and biblical context to help us in our journey toward wholeness. This is an excellent resource for personal growth as well as retreat material. I am a psychotherapist and a spiritual director. I have used it for many years with my directees to help them better understand themselves in relationship to God, scripture, and their spiritual growth.

Profound!
By mpolyglottos
This book should prove to anyone familiar with MBTI that Jesus is the complete God and perfect man! He embodies all four of the major functions: Thinking, Feeling, Sensing and Intuiting. If you study the Bible further, you will realize that He's also the perfect balance between Extraversion and Introversion, as well as Perceiving and Judging. What a wonderful Shepherd we have: surely only He can relate to all of our personality types!

Audit Committees: A Guide for Directors, Management, and Consultants (Fifth Edition) (with CD-ROM), by Kay W. Tatum, Frank M. Burke, Dan M

Audit Committees: A Guide for Directors, Management, and Consultants presents the history, responsibilities, and operation of audit committees. The Guide focuses primarily on publicly held companies, but also includes a short chapter on audit committees for not-for-profit and public sector entities. The Guide is written in a non-technical, active-voice, easy-to-read format. The book is useful for directors serving on audit committees, other members of the board of directors, CEOs, CFOs, legal in-house counsels, internal and external auditors, outside legal counsels, and other consultants to audit committees. It fills a "gap" in the existing literature in that it blends (1) observations based on real-world experiences from serving on audit committees, (2) expert knowledge of the standards of external and internal auditors, and (3) knowledge of the latest requirements from the New York Stock Exchange, National Association of Securities Dealers/Nasdaq, American Stock Exchange, and the SEC, including the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002. Audit Committees covers subjects rarely discussed, such as the process for terminating an external auditor. This Fifth Edition also features a free, companion CD-ROM containing workpapers, including checklists and document templates that can be put to immediate use.

Prada stores carry a few obscenely expensive items in order to boost sales for everything else (which look like bargains in comparison). People used to download music for free, then Steve Jobs convinced them to pay. How? By charging 99 cents. That price has a hypnotic effect: the profit margin of the 99 Cents Only store is twice that of Wal-Mart. Why do text messages cost money, while e-mails are free? Why do jars of peanut butter keep getting smaller in order to keep the price the "same"? The answer is simple: prices are a collective hallucination.

In Priceless, the bestselling author William Poundstone reveals the hidden psychology of value. In psychological experiments, people are unable to estimate "fair" prices accurately and are strongly influenced by the unconscious, irrational, and politically incorrect. It hasn't taken long for marketers to apply these findings. "Price consultants" advise retailers on how to convince consumers to pay more for less, and negotiation coaches offer similar advice for businesspeople cutting deals. The new psychology of price dictates the design of price tags, menus, rebates, "sale" ads, cell phone plans, supermarket aisles, real estate offers, wage packages, tort demands, and corporate buyouts. Prices are the most pervasive hidden persuaders of all. Rooted in the emerging field of behavioral decision theory, Priceless should prove indispensable to anyone who negotiates.

From Publishers Weekly
Poundstone (Gaming the Vote) dives into the latest psychological findings to investigate how and why prices are allocated. Beginning with the controversial lawsuit in which a jury awarded $2.9 million in damages to a woman who had spilled a scalding cup of McDonald's coffee on herself, the author presents a readable history of how we are subtly manipulated into paying more (or less) for goods and services—and the research that attempts to explain our baffling and irrational susceptibility to pricing. The idea of anchoring and adjustment—setting an arbitrary number to subconsciously drive higher or lower estimates—is just one of many research areas explained at length. While Poundstone's case studies are vivid, the abundance of theories and experiments might prove overwhelming for the casual reader. Nevertheless, the scope of the analysis—its attention to economic abstractions as well as real-world consequences—braids together theory and practice to leave an indelible impression on the reader. Grocery shopping will never seem so simple again when one realizes how much work goes into assigning a price to a box of cereal. (Jan.)

From Booklist
Poundstone, author and columnist, reviews innovative work in psychology called behavioral decision theory, or the study of how people make decisions. We learn how people estimate numbers, the process of making wild guesses, jotting down offers and counteroffers, and rating anything on a scale of 1 to 10. Extensive research on pricing strategies has been conducted, and marketers have learned what people will pay is changeable and consumers can be manipulated. The book cites numerous experiments, including how juries award damages in court; reserve price research, or the maximum a buyer will pay; the way smart people are influenced by mere words and by the way choices are framed; sale prices are more powerful motivators than charm prices (those slightly below a round number); and money and chocolate are the most popular motivators in behavioral decision experiments. This collection of experiments and related findings is essentially an academic work for a variety of students. --Mary Whaley

Review

“Priceless is an instructive and entertaining romp through the hits of recent research on decision making, which will leave you amused, smarter, and wondering about what money and prices really mean.” ―Daniel Kahneman, professor emeritus, Princeton University, and winner of the 2002 Nobel Prize in Economics

“A powerful argument that should be a wake-up call to everyone who still subscribes to the old model of economics.” ―Dan Ariely, author of Predictably Irrational: The Hidden Forces that Shape Our Decisions

“Poundstone has managed to write a book that is fun to read and yet well-researched and substantive. Without a minute of suffering the reader gets to know nearly all the key contributors to the science of decision making. Recommended for anyone who has to make decisions.” ―Richard H. Thaler, coauthor (with Cass R. Sunstein) of Nudge: Improving Decisions on Health, Wealth and Happiness

“The psychology of prices is, to an extent, the psychology of life, and thus the lessons of Priceless are indeed life lessons. Poundstone's lively descriptions of the irrational quirks that characterize our behavior are engaging and enlightening. Take it with you when you're thinking of buying (or selling) something. It might save you a bundle.” ―John Allen Paulos, author of Innumeracy: Mathematical Illiteracy and Its Consequences and Irreligion: A Mathematician Explains Why the Arguments for God Just Don't Add Up

“If you can get this book for under $100, grab it! After you read it, you will better understand why the price you paid felt like a bargain.” ―Max Bazerman, professor of business administration, Harvard Business School, and coauthor of Judgment in Managerial Decision Making

“Much of behavioral economics . . . has focused on the seemingly crazy ways in which people and prices interact. In his new book Priceless, William Poundstone offers a thoroughly accessible and enjoyable tour of this research . . . Poundstone is an engaging intellectual historian who traces the development of behavioral economics from its roots in the 1960s discipline called psychophysics, an offshoot of psychology . . . It was more than century ago that Oscar Wilde famously observed that ‘people know the price of everything and the value of nothing.' In Priceless, we now have the proof.” ―Steven Pearlstine, Washington Post

“Pricing is a richer subject than you might imagine. The smile that creeps onto your face when a shameless marketing gambit reminds you of something you read in Poundstone's book? Priceless.” ―Peter Coy, Business Week

“[Poundstone] makes complicated economic and psychological concepts palatable by using a numble, colloquial style in refreshingly short chapters . . . Dozens of fascinating topics are explored . . . At the end you will be left wondering what money and prices really mean--the dizzying quirky irrational sort of wonder that Alice found in ‘Wonderland.'” ―Roger Miller, The Denver Post

“Bright analysis of the psychology of pricing . . . readable and revealing.” ―Kirkus Reviews

Priceless lessons in pricing
By Oliver Fritsch
I ordered this book after a good review in the Wall Street Journal.

From the title it sounds like a fairly dry book on pricing theories for a professional marketing audience.
In reality it is a very entertaining, well researched book about how prices are set from all kinds of businesses, how consumers react to them - and why.

Having worked in marketing and as an entrepreneur for 20 years, I have come across some of the stories quoted in the book already. However, I was not aware, that a German professor (Hermann Simon) runs the biggest pricing consulting firm in the world, that restaurant menus are better designed without leading dots before the price (otherwise they guide the eye to the lowest priced item) or that supermarkets yield a $2 higher average shopping cart revenue if the path through the market goes counterclockwise instead of clockwise.

It will take some work to extract pricing lessons for your own business (you actually have to READ the book first!) but it is pleasant enough!

Pretty good, though not quite what I expected
By Michele
I bought this book after hearing the author interviewed on NPR. In the brief two-minute (or thereabouts) interview the author mentioned some factoids that sounded fascinating and whetted my appetite for more.

Now having read the book, I have to say that, although I learned things about the human mind I never knew before, I was disappointed in how dry the book was overall. The first half was devoted to the history of psychophysics, and numerous experiments conducted over the last hundred or so years. These experiments have served to establish just how quirky, irrational and suggestible the human mind is with regards to numbers, and pretty much debunk the established notion among economists that humans behave rationally when it comes to numbers, always making decisions that will best benefit themselves (the mythical Homo Economicus). Although these experiments were all new and surprising to me, reading about them felt like reading a college textbook. Not exactly my idea of pleasure reading!!

Just about exactly halfway through the book, Poundstone gets more interesting. This is when he starts citing real-world examples of how savvy businesses take advantage of the mind's susceptibility to numbers (often using the service of "price consultants"), all with the intent of getting clueless customers to part with more of their hard-earned money. This part of the book was truly fascinating, as he talked about how super-pricey designer boutiques arrange merchandise in their stores, how restaurants design their menus, and how new and unknown artists price their work to gain attention.

Alas, this part of the book was all too short, as Poundstone soon lapsed again into talking about more experiments.

I did learn some intriguing things about how my own mind works. I had previously thought I was impervious to the influence of advertisers and marketers. Alas, I now realize that when it comes to the murky, arbitrary realm of prices, my brain is as suggestible as anyone else's.

My conclusion: the fascinating factoids mentioned in the two-minute NPR interview were THE entire interesting part of the book -- the rest of it is somewhat tedious and academic. I was pleased with the book overall and would recommend it, albeit only to someone else who is pretty nerdish and interested in this kind of thing. This book is definitely not for everyone.

Fun-to-read, entertaining, educational, topical
By rbnn
There is an intriguing irony (if not synchronicity) to my purchase of this book.

The story is, I had been trying to buy this book for a few weeks from Amazon.

But I couldn't (without incurring shipping fees), because Amazon had delisted the hardcover book from their catalog. Why would Amazon refuse to sell a new book by a prominent author? Well, ostensibly it was "retaliation" for the book publisher's (Macmillan's) request that Amazon charge higher prices for Kindle books published by Macmillan. Leaving aside the question of why users without a Kindle should have their ordinary book access restricted because of a pricing dispute over a product they do not want, the imbroglio raises two salient issues about pricing:

(1) Why is $9.99 (what Amazon wanted to charge) the "right" price for a Kindle e-book? Why not $12.00 or $14.00 (which Macmillan wanted to charge)? If you read some of the Kindle users' blogs, they are adamant that $9.99 is the right price, and that $14.00 is too high - but how do they know?

(2) Why would Macmillan care if Amazon charges too little for Kindle pricing anyway? It doesn't directly affect their profits (Amazon makes up the difference).

Well, as it turns out, the underlying framework behind both of these questions is carefully discussed and elucidated in this very book!

As to issue (1), Poundstone argues that much of what we think of as "fair" pricing is nothing more than a collection of cognitive fallacies and biases. The most important of these fallacies are the contrast effect (pricing taking on significance from neighboring prices) and the anchoring effect (we are drawn to a particular number). Poundstone illustrates these effects, and the process by which their importance was recognized first in the literature and then in consumer practice, through a long series of vignettes that recapitulate the genesis and development of pricing theory, behavioral economics, and psychological decision theory. So as it issue (1), Poundstone would probably argue that many of the reasons people give to support $9.99 as being more "fair" than $14.00 are illusory - that pricing is far more fluid and idiosyncratic than most people appreciate.

As to (2), Poundstone might argue that Macmillan is worried about the contrast effect. Macmillan would be concerned that even to a person who does not have nor intend ever to acquire a Kindle, the proximity of the $9.99 would make its hardback price of say $18.00 seem higher than it actually was to a consumer. So this book lends support to Macmillan's position as to issue (2).

Now, let me briefly get to the meat of the book.

The book is structured along the lines of that distinctive modern subgenre of popular economics books in which anecdote and biography are interwoven and are equal partners with theory and experiment. Careful measurements by colorful character, in the stories of these works, gradually overturns entrenched orthodoxy, first in a small-scale and then in the large. Popular exponents of this style include Malcolm Gladwell, whose Tipping Point, Blink, and What the Dog Saw are canonical examples; Michael Lewis, whose Money Ball described the impact of statistics on baseball; Thomas Bass, whose Eudaemonic Pie and The Predictors foreshadowed the more modern style and which treated the impact of statistics and nonlinear modelling (chaos theory) respectively; Sam Savage, whose Flaw of Averages is a good introduction to statistics in this style; and of course Steven Levitt with his Freakonomics series.

This book is a worthy and interesting addition to the genre. Of the many interesting anecdotes, my favorite was probably Eskildsen and the World Trade Center, and how Las Vegas turned out to play a major role in the development of psychology. The cast of characters, including ex-Israeli soldiers among others, was very entertaining. And the theory, although of course subject to some carping (no confidence factors in many of the studies reported, for example) highlighted the key points clearly and gave the reader clear paths for further knowledge.

Thus, I would recommend this book as a good introduction not only to pricing but also to behavioral economics and human decision-making generally.

About the Author
Although he almost always had a lead role in elementary school plays as well as church pageants, Don Gallo's dramatic interests ended abruptly one Easter Sunday when he was unable to recall a single word from a memorized passage he was attempting to recite at the morning church service. Any theatrical talents he may possess have since been utilized only in English classroom and lecture halls.

Dr. Gallo, who has been a junior high school English teacher and reading specialist, is a professor of English at Central Connecticut State University, where he supervises student teachers and teaches courses in writing and in literature for young adults. He lives in West Hartford, Connecticut.

He has edited three collections of short stories written by Famous writers of books for young adults; Sixteen, Visions, and Connections; and he has written a critical biography of author Richard Peck. His most recent book is a collection of autobiographies of notable young adult authors called Speaking for Ourselves.

Inappropriate for middle school students
By TheBloggart
Not only are these stories lackluster, they (specifically those in the "Love" section) make explicit references to sex. Yet these stories are being targeted to preteens. Not only that, some of the stories are incredibly misogynistic, and do not present a positive images of teenagers. I'd point to the story "Turmoil in a Beige and Blue Room"- or some pretentious title similar to that) in which a teenage girl rambles on about boys, how important it is to be with a boy, and so on and so on. This is stereotypical, and the story doesn't give the reader much to think about- just strings and strings of negative stereotypes.

Then there is another story about a soldier and a woman having sex, in which she explicitly states that she will have sex with him "just for him," as if she's making a sacrifice of some sort. Again, these stories are for middle school students/young adults, yet they present backwards and negative attitudes toward women, teenagers, and sex.

Save yourself the time, and read anything else. I hear there's a certain well-known book series about Chicken Soup that is pretty positive and does the job right.

The Epitome of Depressing Eighties "Writing"
By A Customer
This is going to be short, but sweet. This book was by far one of the most bothersome collections of short stories I have had the misfortune to come across. With authors such as Robert Lipsyte, Diane Duane, and Richard Peck, this is hardly what I would call a "selection of great work from great writers." For that matter, It isn't a collection of anything but chronologically trapped short stories featuring such characters as "Craig the Cat" the rock-star who dressed like a cat and held a bottle of spilling milk while posing atop a garbage can for magazine shoots. The biggest problem with this book is that the stories are oriented for pre-teens but to find any value or worthwhile messages in the book, you would have to be at least sixteen. Oh the sweet irony. As a young teenager, I feel that this book was a complete was of time. G'day.

Great book for secondary Engligh teachers!
By A Customer
As a middle school English teacher, I am always interested in finding short stories that can be used as a part of curriculum while being interesting to teenagers. Sixteen is designed around "themes" which fits in nicely with today's teaching methods. Not only are they interesting and thought-provoking, the stories also make it easy to teach literary elements/techniques
