The H. L. Hunley: The Secret Hope of the Confederacy, by Tom Chaffin

On the evening of February 17, 1864, the Confederacy's H. L. Hunley sank the Union's formidable sloop of war the USS Housatonic and became the first submarine in world history to sink an enemy ship. But after accomplishing such a feat, the Hunley and her crew of eight also vanished beneath the cold Atlantic waters off Charleston, South Carolina. For generations, the legend of the Hunley grew as searchers prowled the harbor, looking for remains. Even after the submarine was definitively located in 1995 and recovered five years later, those legends have continued to flourish. In a tour de force of document-sleuthing and insights gleaned from the excavation of this remarkable vessel, the distinguished Civil War–era historian Tom Chaffin presents the most thorough telling of the Hunley's story possible. Of panoramic breadth, this saga begins long before the submarine was even assembled and follows the tale into the boat's final hours and through its recovery in 2000. Engaging and groundbreaking, The H. L. Hunley provides the definitive account of a fabled craft.

From Publishers Weekly
This lively account of the first submarine to sink an opposing ship is an excellent niche history. Chaffin (Sea of Gray) relates that H.L. Hunley was neither soldier nor engineer, but an adventurous New Orleans attorney turned exporter who wanted to make his fortune selling the submarine he developed with several partners to the Confederate Navy. After two unsuccessful tests, in 1863 a third submarine performed decently, but the unenthusiastic local commander extolled its virtues to General Beauregard, who agreed to commission a submarine. It was shipped to Charleston, S.C., where it sank twice during testing, drowning both crews— including Hunley himself. In February 1864, the submarine, named the H.L. Hunley, finally sank a Union blockader with its torpedo but never returned. The event assumed mythic status, culminating in great excitement when divers exhumed the wreck in 2000. Chaffin finishes with a lucid description of the impressive details of this splendid artifact of engineering. Sampling from letters, articles and memoirs, the author succeeds in separating facts from legend in this engrossing examination of a pioneering weapon of war. Maps. (Oct.)

“Detailed and fascinating . . . Tom Chaffin has produced what may be considered the most exhaustive and accurate account of the submarine and the men who built her in his new book The H. L. Hunley: The Secret Hope of the Confederacy. Given the iron-fisted control the Confederacy exerted over the media to preserve its military secrets and a dearth of official or personal correspondence on the matter, Chaffin faced a daunting task in piecing together his history, but his hard work pays off here in a rich and lively book about visionaries, mercenaries and a technological marvel.” ―John G. L. Hunley, composing a narrative that crackles with excitement and suspense.” ―Fredric Koeppel, The Commercial Appeal (Memphis, TN)

“A first-class recounting of the Hunley, from its roots in New Orleans to the first--and failed--submarine at Mobile, Ala., to two founderings during trials and training at Charleston and finally to the submarine itself.” ―Jules Wagman, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

“Avoiding uninformed speculation, Chaffin crafts an exciting narrative of an important innovation in military technology and the political considerations that shaped its development. Insightful and intriguing, meriting a place toward the front of the squadron of Civil War, naval and aquatic archeology titles.” ―Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

“Sampling from letters, articles and memoirs, the author succeeds in separating facts from legend in this engrossing examination of a pioneering weapon of war.” ―Publishers Weekly

“A definitive reading of the submarine's forensic evidence.” ―Garden & Gun magazine

“This outstanding piece of scholarship and clear writing will answer most questions and lay to rest most legends about the famous Confederate submarine, the first of its kind to sink an enemy warship . . . The research that went into this book was also exhaustive (it is also unbiased), but it doesn't make the book exhausting. Altogether, "the secret hope of the Confederacy" is now a good deal less secret, and Civil War collections can fill many gaps with a single purchase.” ―Roland Green, Booklist

“Fueled by obsessive scholarship and a boyish sense of wonder, Tom Chaffin takes us deep down into uncharted fathoms of the Civil War--and then surfaces with a finny, fascinating tale that's equal parts Shelby Foote and Jules Verne.” ―Hampton Sides, author of Blood and Thunder

“There is no more compelling human or high-tech story in the annals of the Civil War than the saga of the remarkable H. L. Hunley and its brave, ill-fated crew. Drawing on a vast archive of original sources and an abundance of interpretive skill, Tom Chaffin has crafted an informed, dramatic page-turner. This is authoritative military history that reads like a novel.” ―Harold Holzer, cochairman of the USS Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission and coauthor of The Confederate Image

“Chronicling this multifaceted story of the Confederacy's secret hope, Tom Chaffin has answered many of the mysteries surrounding the H. L. Hunley. With an extensive examination of primary documents, he has taken on the mythologizers, offering instead an extraordinary contribution to historical understanding.” ―Orville Vernon Burton, author of The Age of Lincoln

“The author provides a complete history of the Hunley as well as biographical sketches of the individuals involved in its financing, design, construction, and operation . . . Utilizing a variety of published and unpublished source materials, as well as interviews with the Lasch Conservation Center archaeologists tasked with the vessel's excavation and preservation, Chaffin also dispassionately examines the many myths and mysteries surrounding the Hunley. The relative viability of competing theories, among them inquiries into the mythical ‘blue light,' the location of the wreck, how the submarine was lost, etc., is addressed, often raising more questions than answers. With well-supported conclusions and appealing writing, The H. L. Hunley will serve as a fine introductory book for the interested general reader, as well as a handy resource for the more dedicated students of the Civil War navies.” ―Andrew Wagenhoffer, Civil War Books and Authors

“An excellently written and well-documented account of a piece of Civil War history . . . Of the numerous [Hunley] books to appear in recent years, Tom Chaffin's The H. L. Hunley: The Secret Hope of the Confederacy emerges as the best.” ―Steven Ramold, Civil War Book Review

“A well-written and interesting volume.” ―Kenneth D. Williams, Civil War News

“A satisfying read for Civil War buffs or naval buffs, for those who know much, or nothing, about the epic tale of the H. L. Hunley.” ―The Valdosta Daily Times

Something New in Civil War Studies
By Brian Laslie
Even though hundreds of books are published on the Civil War every year, it is rare that something truly new and original comes along. "The H.L. Hunley" by Tom Chaffin provides exactly that. Even though the story of the Hunley is well known to Civil War buffs and professional historians this is the first book to cover in depth the submarine boats creation, mission, destruction and recovery. It also offers insight into the development of submarine warfare as an accepted practice of war making.

Too often in the study of history one will come across a well-researched book devoid of a good narrative or, in return, a great story with little to no actual research. Chaffin deftly combines both and creates that rarest of Civil War books, a well-researched book that is also well written and will appeal to a broad audience of both layman and academics. There is something for everyone in this fine work. Combining history, myth and memory, as well as recent archeological work, Chaffin's book will be the starting point for study of the doomed ship.

It is a must-read for Civil War historians' ands adds invaluably to our knowledge of the defense of Charleston in the waning period of the war. This book will also please students and readers interested in maritime history and the study of unconventional warfare.

Best Hunley book ever
By Jim Peyton
In biblical scholarship we speak of the search for the historical Jesus. We humans tend to create legends and myths around important people, places and events. Someone must have the keen scholarship, the healthy skepticism, and the painstaking research to carefully separate fact from fiction, legend from history. Dr. Tom Chaffin has marvelously demonstrated this ability in his new book on the Hunley. I feel indebted to Dr. Chaffin in helping me better understand Horace Hunley from a psychological perspective. This is very important to me as a blood relative of Horace. I am fascinated not only by the submarine but also by the man for whom the submarine is named. Not since the Ruth Duncan book, "The Captain and Submarine CSS H L Hunley" printed in 1965, has any author devoted as much research on Horace Hunley himself, including his sister Volumnia Hunley Barrow and her wealthy husband, Robert Ruffin Barrow. Their intimate connections with Horace Hunley are often overlooked in how they shaped him as a man. Dr. Chaffin's breadth of scholarship is applied like a sharp scalpel to every detail of the Hunley story, separating cherished myths from the raw facts. He does this not only with Horace Hunley, but also with George Dixon and Queenie Bennett, along with the story of the blue light said to have been seen from the shore. Having shared Hunley genealogy with Dr. Chaffin from my old Hunley family bible, I am grateful for the opportunity to get to know this historian on a personal level. I have deep respect for his intellect and self-discipline in overcoming a severe struggle with his health as he researched and wrote. As a Sherlock Holmes scrutinizing every detail of an investigation, Dr. Chaffin used a vast variety of resources in writing this fine book. I especially enjoyed the primary sources he consulted and the carefully documented footnotes for any reader who wants to pursue an item of interest even further. I have no doubt that this book will be the authoritative guide and the definitive work for many years on Horace Hunley and the submarine that changed naval history.

The Confederacy's Doomed Submarine
By Rob Hardy
The past few decades have seen an unprecedented flourishing of exploration and retrieval of sunken vessels and their cargo. There are richer wrecks than that of the _H. L. Hunley_, but few of such technological and historical interest. The _Hunley_ was a submarine serving the Confederate forces in the Civil War, and it was the first submarine to sink an enemy ship. It didn't last long thereafter, and it wasn't until World War I that submarines became practical machines of war, but the _Hunley_ was an important step in submarine evolution. After it was raised in 2000, it was available for examination by engineers and historians, and has begun to divulge some of its secrets. In _The H. L. Hunley: The Secret Hope of the Confederacy_ (Hill and Wang), historian Tom Chaffin has told about the raising of the vessel and its recent evaluation by experts, but has given a full history of its development, its creators, and its activity during the Civil War. Chaffin also wrote _Sea of Gray_, an exciting history of the Confederate raider Shenandoah, and has again presented a smoothly narrated and comprehensive story of a lost ship in a lost cause. This time, however, the ship represented the best inventiveness and high-tech accomplishment of its age, and Chaffin has placed the ship, its inventors, and the doomed men who sailed on it within a military, technological, and historical context.

There were submarines before; Leonardo da Vinci himself said he had designed one, but uncharacteristically did not show anyone else the design, he said, "because of the evil nature of men who would practice assassinations at the bottom of the sea..." Chaffin reviews the history of submarines, with the _Hunley_ being far more advanced than any that had gone before. Horace Lawson Hunley was a lawyer and customs officer in New Orleans, and met with his friends inventor James McClintock and Baxter Watson who both owned a machine shop; they conceived the idea of a submarine boat. Their third prototype, created in Mobile, Alabama, was shipped to Charleston in 1863. It was forty feet long, designed for a crew of eight, one commander and seven men to turn the zigzag crankshaft that operated the propeller; there were also hand pumps for shifting ballast. At Charleston, the _Hunley_ sank twice, drowning the two crews, the second commanded by Hunley himself. It may be an illustration of the desperation of the Confederates that the _Hunley_ was re-floated for a third attempt, and crewmen were found to man it. On the night of 17 - 18 February 1864, it was deployed with a mine on a spar, and sank the USS _Housatonic_. Something subsequently went wrong with the _Hunley_, as it sank with all hands. There is evidence that the submarine did not go down in the blast that she gave the _Housatonic_, and there are confused stories of lantern signals and countersignals possibly given by the _Hunley_ after the attack. Of course, the cause of the sinking is one of the interests of researchers who are examining the raised vessel, as are different questions about its manufacture and technical capacity. Of more human interest is that the remains of the third crew were given a stately funeral through the streets of Charleston in 2004. Horse-drawn caissons and Civil War reenactors participated in the procession, which ended in Magnolia Cemetery, the burial place for the men of the first and second crews as well.

The historic sinking of a ship by a submarine did not affect the war's outcome, but _Hunley_ has an important place in the history of how submarines became standard weapons. When the Germans employed submarines in World War I, they used vessels and weapons far beyond anything Horace Hunley and his fellow entrepreneurs could have thought possible. Chaffin explains that the Germans, like the Confederates, practiced commerce raiding, destroying civilian vessels as well as military, bringing to the seas the sort of total war doctrinally propounded by Union general William Tecumseh Sherman. Now, of course, we have submarines ready to deliver enormous destruction, and we take for granted that they are out there ready to do far more than the assassinations Leonardo fretted about. There isn't any way to read about advancements in warfare without some regret, but Chaffin's final chapters, about the curiosity of those who have brought the ship back and are devoted to answering the many mysteries of its creation and operation, contain plenty of optimism and admiration for simple human curiosity, as well as demonstrating once again how strong a hold the Civil War has on the imaginations of those who make it their chief historical interest.

Review
“Explain him? No. Explicate him? No. Enjoy him? Yes, God, yes … Just don’t o.d. You could die laughing.” (Stephen King)

“Cartoonist Gary Larson carries the macabre to hilarious lengths.” (The Wall Street Journal)

“A magnificent contribution to popular culture.” (The Washington Post)

“Samuel Taylor Coleridge, in between opium binges, once distinguished poetry from prose by noting that the former comprises ‘the best words in theirbest order.’ Gary Larson’s achievement in The Far Side® is to have pulled off much the same thing in a humbler medium: the best joke told with the best image … there is no excuse not to have some Larson in your life.” (The Daily Beast)

“Larson communicates a great deal of information in a few simple ink lines. The expressions of his characters are vivid and immediately recognizable … And with just a strand of beads and a pair of harlequin glasses, he can somehow transfer any animal—a shark, a bug, a warthog—into a dowdy suburban hausfrau.” (The Los Angeles Times)

“In an age when black humor is a lost art, Larson’s cartoon is an island of insanity, offering us theperspective of a world where the unreal is normal and vice versa. Its message deep down is a dark one — something about taking ourselves too seriously and strutting around as if we own the place.” (Rolling Stone)

“Bless Gary Larson for his wonderful consistency in casting an artful eye on all of Earth’s wild critters, human or otherwise.” (The Philadelphia Inquirer)

“The unofficial cartoonist laureate of the scientific community.” (Natural History Magazine)

“The natural order of things goes seriously awry, with hilarious results.” (Smithsonian)

“A quirky, brilliant series of cartons that most often feature a variety of insects and animals embroiled in some warped situation comedy.” (Toronto Globe and Mail)

Off-the-Wall Comedy At Its Best
By Not-a-RINO
My son is in the USAF and as you can imagine, it can be stressful, challenging and sometimes boring. He has always loved the comedy of "The Farside" and as a token of how proud I am of him, I set him this book and a few others. These books have not disappointed him at all!

If you have someone that looks at the world through a pair of x-ray glasses purchased from the back of a magazine and always has something to laugh at, I would recommend any of Gary Larson's "The Farside" books as a gift. If laughter is indeed the best medicine, then these books could cure anything.

Compilations & Reviews (w/CD-ROM) 2008-2009, by J. Russell Madray

Compilations & Reviews provides practitioners with a fundamental, real-world approach for conducting the highest quality compilations and reviews. It reduces the technical language of official pronouncements to easy-to-read, easy-to-understand advice and procedures and is designed to help the CPA enhance the quality of his or her practice. The book includes an overview and identification of the professional responsibilities that arise when a CPA accepts a compilation or review engagement, discusses and illustrates the procedures that need to be performed, describes the preparation of the CPA's engagement report, discusses management-use-only compilations, and addresses special engagements such as OCBOA-based financial statements and partnership financial statements. This comprehensive resource also deals with topics ranging from attestation standards for review engagements that do not involve financial statements to financial forecasts and projections. Compilations & Reviews contains an Appendix that assists CPAs in determining what procedures should be performed and/or what approach should be used in order to perform an efficient compilation or review engagement. Throughout, the guide features numerous practice aids, such as checklists, questionnaires, workpapers, sample correspondence, and sample reports that take the auditor through an engagement from the initial evaluation of a client to the issuance of the auditor's report. It comes with a free companion CD-ROM that contains many of the practice aids contained in the book, and more. The files on the CD-ROM can be used as templates and edited to suit the practitioner's needs. It also includes a cross-reference to the original pronouncements and a detailed topical index. The 2008-2009 Edition incorporates the guidance from SQCS-7 and includes discussions of SSARS-15, SSARS-16, and SSARS-17. The 2008-2009 Edition also expands the discussion of independence issues related to compilations and reviews and provides additional examples for management representations to be obtained in a review engagement.

Group Theory in the Bedroom, and Other Mathematical Diversions, by Brian Hayes

Brian Hayes is one of the most accomplished essayists active today―a claim supported not only by his prolific and continuing high-quality output but also by such honors as the National Magazine Award for his commemorative Y2K essay titled "Clock of Ages," published in the November/December 1999 issue of The Sciences magazine. (The also-rans that year included Tom Wolfe, Verlyn Klinkenborg, and Oliver Sacks.) Hayes's work in this genre has also appeared in such anthologies as The Best American Magazine Writing, The Best American Science and Nature Writing, and The Norton Reader. Here he offers us a selection of his most memorable and accessible pieces―including "Clock of Ages"―embellishing them with an overall, scene-setting preface, reconfigured illustrations, and a refreshingly self-critical "Afterthoughts" section appended to each essay.

From Publishers Weekly
In charming prose that more or less makes up for the relative lack of rigor in many of his explorations, about which Hayes is refreshingly honest (I see no reason to doubt this assumption, at least as an approximation, but I also have no evidence to support it), science and technology journalist Hayes (Infrastructure) explains the engineering and arithmetic of clocks and gears, wracks his brain over questions of how best to flip a mattress and visits the prettiest wrong idea in all of twentieth-century science... the vision of piglets suckling on messenger RNA. As he examines huge calculating tables rendered obsolete by computers, Hayes cannot help wondering which of my labors will appear equally quaint and pathetic to some future reader. This observation is echoed by the afterwords where Hayes addresses pointed questions and observations from readers, displaying a brave willingness to admit error and acknowledge advances made since these pieces were first published in the Sciences and American Scientist. Present-day readers would do best to approach this collection more for its literary merits than its revelation of obscure history or cutting-edge mathematical theory. 41 b&w illus. (Apr.)

Review

“If you ever lie awake pondering the complexities of the universe, you may have a soul buddy in Brian Hayes.” ―New Scientist

“Hayes is an assured and genial guide through the often thorny wilds of computation and mathematics.” ―The Star-Tribune (Minneapolis–St. Paul)

“Group Theory in the Bedroom and Other Mathematical Diversions is a marvelous collection of thought-provoking essays that both inform and entertain. You'll be amazed by the things you'll discover in these stories.” ―Ron Graham, professor of mathematics, computer science and engineering, University of California, San Diego, former chief scientist of AT&T, and past president of the American Mathematical Society, the Mathematical Association of America and the International Jugglers Association

“Brian Hayes's book is a refreshing collection of superb mathematical essays. Ranging from choosing up sides to choosing names, the topics are intriguingly nonstandard. Moreover, the writing is clean, the explanations are pellucid, and the effect on the reader is exhilarating. First-rate all the way through.” ―John Allen Paulos, author of Innumeracy: Mathematical Illiteracy and Its Consequences and the forthcoming Irreligion: A Mathematician Explains Why the Arguments for God Just Don't Add Up

“Every essay in this book is a gem of science writing on its highest level--accurate, up to date, brimming with surprising information, deep insights, and a profound love of mathematics. Its scope is awesome. Topics include a fantastic clock in Strasbourg, randomness, poverty, war, geology, genetics, gear ratios, partitions, nomenclature, group theory, and the ambiguity of the equals sign. There isn't a dull page in the book.” ―Martin Gardner, author of The Colossal Book of Short Puzzles and Problems and more than 60 other titles

Extremely Interesting Even for Math-a-phobics
By William Gronos
If you liked the book "Freakonomics: a rogue economist explores the hidden side of everything" (which I loved), there is a good chance you will like this one too. The author may have screwed-up giving it the title he did and by adding "and Other Mathematical Diversions", as it may put off or scare off a lot of people who would find it enjoyable. One would be hard pressed to find a mathematical equation anywhere in the book.

Take for instance the first chapter, "Clock of Ages", on the astronomical clock located in the Strasbourg Cathedral, in the city of Strasbourg, Alsace. Though the current version of the clock dates from 1843, not only was it designed to be Y2K compliant, it is also Y10K functional, designed to directly display the current year up to 9999 and the only revision needed to make it correct for subsequent years would be to paint the number "1" to the left of the display. It will continue to display such events as the correct date for Easter even in the year 19999 (Easter falls on April 3rd in 11842). Though solely a mechanical device, the gears of the clock were designed to be accurate to an error of less than one second per century. There is a gear in the clock that turns only once every 2,500 years and the celestial sphere out in front of the clock will complete one full precessional cycle after the passage of 25,806 years.

After his discussion of the beauty of the design of this clock, the author then takes up a philosophical discussion of time, asking if anyone will still care what date Easter will be in 11842, or even if we will still be counting in years of the Common Era.

The second chapter, "Follow the Money", demonstrates how through even an entirely random process, wealth tends to become concentrated in the hands of a few people, even in a fair system.

The remaining chapters are similarly varied and all are interesting.

A great book with a wide variety of interesting subjects and an engaging, erudite writing style.

Little about group theory; lots about mattresses
By Peter Webb
I was disappointed in this book. Its title suggests that it will contain recreational mathematics, but it contains almost no mathematics at all - not a single equation. Group theory is a subject that has been covered extensively in recreational mathematics, and the author chooses to illustrate it using the symmetries of rotating a mattress. On the way, he ruminates extensively on the subject of mattresses. If you don't know what a "group" is now, after reading this book you will be none the wiser, if you do know, you will wonder why he says so little about the subject. You will learn a lot about how different manufacturers recommend you turn their matresses, but I didn't care before and still don't.

I have similar problems with the other chapters; he interweaves the theory of gear ratios in clocks with that of rational approximations (a natutal fit) but never really explains the mathematics, and instead its more of a story about how he tracked down the original historical sources of where gear ratios were first calculated ...

The chatty and informal style would have worked better in a magazine column, which is where these came from.

If you want a book about mathematics which itself contains virtually no mathematics, and you want something light and easily read, which covers a wide range of topics, sure.

If you know what a "group" is (or a continued fraction) and want to see if he brings a new twist to these old subjects, I think you will be diappointed.

Excellent Book on Perspective and Framing Problems
By K. Scott Proctor
This is an excellent collection of thought-provoking essays related to mathematics. Brian Hayes covers a wide array of topics through the lens of mathematics in an engaging, thought-provoking and entertaining manner.

The essays contained in this book, addressing topics such as the genetic code, the Continental Divide and randomness, among other topics, vary widely in subject matter, but share a common underlying theme. Specifically, each of these essays asks the reader to examine "things," such as the genetic code, from a unique perspective. Moreover, Hayes pulls the reader through a thoughtful and insightful problem framing approach that has broad applications across many disciplines.

I found the content and style across each essay to be first-rate. This book teaches the reader many things...most importantly, I feel it offers rare insight into the power of shifting perspective and framing problems.

Half Slave and Half Free, Revised Edition: The Roots of Civil War, by Bruce Levine

Revised Edition
With a New Preface and Afterword

In a revised edition, brought completely up to date with a new preface and afterword and an expanded bibliography, Bruce Levine's succinct and persuasive treatment of the basic issues that precipitated the Civil War is as compelling as ever. Levine explores the far-reaching, divisive changes in American life that came with the incomplete Revolution of 1776 and the development of two distinct social systems, one based on slavery, the other on free labor--changes out of which the Civil War developed.

From Publishers Weekly
In this academic but accessible survey of the 80 years preceding the Civil War, historian Levine ( Who Built America: The Place of Labor History and Working People in U.S. History ) synthesizes a vast body of scholarship to show how the country's two different labor systems influenced economics, society, culture and, ultimately, politics. The North's free market nurtured "free will" evangelicalism over Calvinist predestination, and that evangelicalism clashed with slavery. In the South the slave system affected the planter class not only in religion but in entertainment and morality. Ironically, slaves "appropriated both the democratic-republican and evangelical Christian doctrine of the nation that held them captive and reshaped those materials into weapons of liberation." Northern unity was for years undermined by differences regarding the ethics of its own free labor system, but the South's demand for increased federal guarantees for slavery--to preserve its own economy--finally forced the North to confront the issue of slavery. That led to increased polarization and war, what black leader Frederick Douglass called "the inexorable logic of events."

From Library Journal
In this vigorously argued narrative tracking the causes of the Civil War, Levine tries to explain what drove so many working people to commit themselves to the cause of freedom--Southern slaves by their efforts to resist bondage and Northern farmers, mechanics, and factory laborers by their support for free soil and free labor principles. By Levine's reckoning, the slavery issue overrode ethnic and economic concerns and made sectional differences almost irreconciliable within the framework of the Union. Levine succeeds in giving fresh views of the social lives of immigrants, slaves, and working people generally, but his preoccupation with the politics of slavery overwhelms his social history and makes disunion seem more predestined than it really was. Still, this is an eminently readable, intelligent book recommended for use in college courses and for purchase by college/university libraries.

Disposes of sugar-coated views of the Civil War...
By trbell
We all know that the Civil War was fought over slavery, but what I didn't realize before reading this book is that for the majority of northerners in the years leading up to the war, their objections to slavery had more to do with their own economic self-interest than with arguments over the morality of slavery. Most northerners were as racist as southerners, and while some of them undoubtedly felt sorry for slaves, very few were willing to risk their own life to free them. Their dislike of slavery was due primarily to the fact that it supported an American aristocracy (the "planter elite") that felt increasingly entitled to lord over not only blacks, but also whites. Levine links this to what was probably the main cause of the Civil War: the opening of the West and white northerners' fears that slavery would spread there, forcing them to compete with slave labor and live in a society with blacks and aristocrats, both of which were equally repugnant to them. Most men did not join the Union ranks because they sympathized with slaves or, like John Brown, wished to abolish it where it already existed; they did it, the author explains, because they wanted to preserve democracy (albeit a "white man's" democracy) in the new western states and territories. I found this fascinating and much more interesting than the sugar-coated view of the Civil War I was taught in school.

I was also intrigued by the author's discussion of the impact of European immigrants, especially Germans, in the United States in the 1850s. The Revolution of 1848 had crushed hopes of creating democracies in central Europe. For many, America really was democracy's "last best hope." When these immigrants, however, saw slaveowners creating what was essentially a European-style aristocracy in the United States, they were outraged and worked to shape public opinion. We forget that in 1860, the memory of Europe and European despotism was still very alive for many Americans.

This is one of the most rewarding books I've ever read, and I had many "AHA!" moments while reading it. There is real "meat" here, not just entertaining stories or "feel-good" history. At the same time, the book is accessible, well paced, and vividly written.

Great read if your interested in the Civil War
By Riley Hilliard
A great read if your looking to further your education on Economic and Racial precursors to the Civil War. Bruce Levine presents a fantastic look into the differences between the North and South that eventually led to the Civil War. "Half Slave and Half Free" is a wealth of information regarding the pre Civil War economies of the North and South, the History and origination of slavery in North America, and the ways Slavery was accepted and rejected by the two opposing regions over time which lead to the polarization of the Antebellum United States.

Readable Translation and Fair Notes
By Justin Ennis
The first thing to notice about this translation of Justin Martyr's First and Second Apologies is that the text of the Apologies themselves is only 62 pages, although the book weighs in at 245. The majority of the remaining pages are notes on the text, so the book is heavily footnoted with the notes encapsulating the translator's views on Justin and engagement with the scholarly consensus.

Reading Justin is an excellent experience and this translation is quite readable. The Apologies contain many scripture references but most of them aren't interpreted in the way that almost any modern person would. At one point in the notes (note 315 on page 162) the translator refers to Justin's reading of a particular passage as "fanciful exegesis" and notes that Justin, "Quotes Old Testament proof-texts that sometimes appear to have been picked at random" but says that this, "Should not blind us to his fundamentally biblical outlook." This sums up the way that the translator approaches Justin in the notes, with much forgiveness and allowance for his place in history. Apparently this is not always the case as quotes in the book from other scholars indicate that there is certainly a strong set of opinions that Justin was rather simple-minded and so no small effort is expended on the part of the translator to refute these opinions. If you are into objectivity in your "scholarship" then this might bother you as it often can come across as being rather biased toward Justin, but I took it as simply being fair and appreciated it as such.

This was a wonderful book. I just couldnt put it down. Its the third book in the Ancient Christian Writers that I purchased.

I learned a lot from reading St Justin Apology in defense of Christianity of the roots of Christian beliefs. He section on the sacraments, "especially the Eucharist" is wonderful. Other books from the series I recommend The Didache, St Ignatious, and Clement.

Throughout this work Justin tells the reader how he believes demons are involved in pagan religion, defends the Church against accusations of immorality, and touches on his beliefs about the Logos.

The endnotes are fantastic informative throughout.

Night Visitor and Other Stories, by B. Traven

Here are ten of B. Traven's remarkable short stories. Three of them are long stories: The setting of "The Night Visitor" is a hacienda deep in the Mexican bush where a lonely American recreates in his imagination an eerie world of Indian folk legend. "The Cattle Drive" is a vivid description of a cowboy's trek with a thousand head of cattle across the Mexican plains; it has all the authenticity that Hollywood Westerns lack. "Macario," which was made into a prize-winning motion picture, is a wry Mexican fable about an Indian woodcutter who makes a compact with the devil to save his family from starvation. Among seven shorter stories, some are based on incidents from contemporary Mexican life, others on ancient Indian folk legends. All have spontaneity, humor, and warmth. "B. Traven is coming to be recognized as one of the narrative masters of the twentieth century."―New York Times Book Review.

Stories of Mexico before Disney and Taco Bell
By Bob Newman
To say that B. Traven captures the essence of old Mexican life outside the big cities, coming from a reviewer who has yet to set foot in Mexico, might seem a bit rich ! But I've heard that his novels and stories are required reading in Mexican schools. That may give more than just a little insight into what Mexicans think of his work. The pleasingly-written stories are well-constructed around themes of interest to everybody---history, poverty, work, love, dreams, animals, and humor. Throughout, Traven's respect for the common people of Mexico shines like an unwavering beacon, though he never idolizes them.
The title piece, about an American stuck away in remote jungles, who reads his way through a library of rare books on pre-Columbian Indian civilizations, and reaps an amazing result, cannot fail to grip readers. Stories like "Effective Medicine", "Assembly Line" and "The Cattle Drive" reflect Mexican life as seen through American (or foreign) eyes, while "Burro Trading" is one of the most humorous stories I've read in a long time. Mexico is no doubt in the grip of the 21st century already---traffic jams, pollution, the Internet, privatisation, globalisation, and sweeping political change. These stories might harken back to a simpler time of less justice but less uncertainty, when social status was more fixed and Mexican ways had not been sullied by MTV, MacDonalds, and Madonna. Mexico is no doubt better off nowadays. The view of Mexico provided by the history of the Conquest and by the broad strokes of Rivera, Orozco, and Sequeiros is not the only one. This group of stories, by a talented, somewhat-mysterious writer, ought to be much better known than they are because of their attention to smaller details on a more daily plane. I strongly recommend THE NIGHT VISITOR.

tremendous stories from b. traven
By Maureen de Sousa
"my personal history would not be disappointing to readers, but it is my own affair which i want to keep to myself" - b. traven in defense of his refusal to provide a biography to help promote his first novel.

the name that b. traven was christened with may never be revealed to us, but as tantalizing as that mystery is, i think it's pretty evident when you read his books that you know him: his interest in mexico and the indigenous population and their folklore; his disdain for greed and those who succumb to it; his love of travelling and adventure. the stories that comprise this collection are all reflective of those interests he most famously combined in the novel The Treasure of the Sierra Madre. i think b. traven's talents might suit the short form best: as a writer, his strengths lie in his dialogue, and his characters, and the adventures they embark upon, and while the adventures are grand, he doesn't rely on a lot of plot to entrance you.

with the exception of "a new god was born" which felt a little too thin, and too journalistic in style, more a footnote in a history of guatemala than something that stood up on its own legs, all the stories in this collection really kicked my ass. i found "night visitor" spooky but also fascinating, and my enjoyment of it was perhaps coloured by the mystery of b. traven: one of the characters claims he has written 18 books but had no desire to publish them once they were perfected, but instead burned them, feeling a complete satisfaction in his cycle of creation and destruction. stories like "effective medicine", "the cattle drive", and "midnight call" seem like he must have lived them, and yet make me feel i had these adventures too. "conversion of some indians" and particularly "friendship" ask some very basic and deep questions, that he surely believed we should all ask ourselves, and challenge us to think and find our own answers. "macario", the beautiful final tale in the collection, is regarded as a modern mexican fable: the story of a woodcutter whose only ambition in life is to eat a whole turkey himself, and faces life and death decisions as a result. it is a tremendous story, and it doesn't really matter if the man who wrote it was mexican, german, or american. he just tells a great rollicking tale. :)
