A FAMOUS (INFAMOUS?) DOCUMENT PROPOSING FAR MORE "PROGRESSIVE" STANDARDS FOR THE CHURCH

The Foreword to this 1977 publication cautions, "The pages that follow constitute the final report of a committee established by the Board of Directors of the Catholic Theological Society of American in 1972... the Board voted to 'receive' the report and to arrange for its publication. These actions imply neither the approval nor disapproval by the Society... of the contents of the report. The publication is intended as a service to the membership of the Society and a wider public of interested persons by making available the results of this research." (Pg. ix) The Preface further says, "Although many members of the Society were consulted, the finished report does not necessarily reflect the official position of the Society or its Board nor a consensus of its members. Nor do we as a committee presume in any way to put forth our conclusions as the official magisterial teaching of the Catholic Church. We have attempted simply to bring Christian theological reflection to bear on the complex phenomenon of human sexuality in the hope of providing some helpful pastoral guidelines to beleaguered pastors, priests, counselors and teachers." (Pg. xiv)
The norm they propose is "that sexual expression to be moral must be 'creative and integrative' for the parties involved.'" (Pg. 231) The first chapter notes, "one should not look to the Bible for a systematic presentation on sex. The Scriptures are not a textbook of ethics... Only a few general lines or directions can be abstracted, and these must be interpreted historically, combined with the more adequate scientific knowledge of our times." (Pg. 7) They add, "As in the Old Testament, every statement in the New Testament regarding human sexuality is historically occasioned and conditioned. Jesus did not proclaim any new sexual ethic as such." (Pg. 30) Later, they state, "The New Testament ... does not address the question of loving, responsible sexual intercourse of a couple engaged to be married." (Pg. 155)
Regarding procreation, they say, "The attitude... of 'leaving it all in the hands of God and accepting whatever he sends' is both simplistic and morally irresponsible. Responsible parenthood demands readiness to acknowledge that there are situations and conditions where it would be irresponsible and hence immoral to beget children." (Pg. 113) They suggest, "The final decision and verification as to whether the use of contraceptive means is morally disruptive or preservative of greater values ought then to be left to the consciences of the individuals concerned." (Pg. 127)
They argue, "This is not to say that homosexual acts are not sinful. They may very well be, to a greater or lesser degree, even in the case of fixed inversion. But the morality of homosexual acts, like that of all human acts, must be determined by the principles of Christian ethics and moral theology. We must look to reason, aware of the data afforded by contemporary science, guided by the ideals and motives of Christian faith. We cannot simply appeal for answers to tradition or to revelation, as if the question had been decided once and for all by divine decree on the shores of the Dead Sea." (Pg. 201) They add, "It bears repeating that there is much that is uncertain and provisional about the subject of homosexuality... [but] where there is sincere affection, responsibility, and the germ of authentic human relationship---in other words, where there is love---God is surely present." (Pg. 218)
The Catholic Church has obviously gone in quite a different direction from what was proposed in this book; but it remains a fascinating document for historical study of doctrinal development and discussion.

Moral disgust... and gag gift!

Bought this book as a gag gift for a friend. Apparently our older priests were taught the "Catholic Church"'s teaching on sexuality out of this book -- which is probably why they are so catechetically messed up today.
You can almost literally find heresy on every single page. From masturbation being completely normal to bestiality being acceptable in some circumstances... this is just ugly...
But great for a gag gift to a young traditionalist!
