From Publishers Weekly
In this readable synthesis of scholarship, University of Delaware history professor Kolchin takes a judicious view of historians' controversies surrounding this topic. Kolchin ( Unfree Labor: American Slavery and Russian Serfdom ) offers a good narrative account of American slavery, but the book is most useful for his historiographical navigation. While some scholars have argued that slaves quickly abandoned African ways, and others maintain that slave culture was strongly African, Kolchin disputes this dichotomy, describing instead the development of a unique African American culture. Likewise, Kolchin sees the validity of studies that have focused on slaves as victims as well as more recent work emphasizing their resiliency. With perspective drawn from his research into the end of slavery in other countries, Kolchin stresses that Reconstruction, once seen by scholars as cruel to Southern whites and more recently as insufficiently revolutionary, was in fact "an extraordinary departure" that took control of the mechanics of emancipation away from the former masters.

From Kirkus Reviews
In a lively interpretive history, Kolchin (History/Univ. of Delaware) succinctly traces America's institution of slavery from its Colonial beginnings to the Reconstruction era. American slavery, Kolchin explains, didn't develop in isolation but evolved as part of a trend toward forced labor in the New World colonies, especially in the Caribbean and Brazil. In Colonial America, ``the initial demand for labor was precisely that--for labor--and was largely color-blind.'' Most forced laborers were indentured servants from Great Britain; although some slavery existed as early as the founding, in the early 17th century, of the Virginia colony, not until that century's close were Africans imported in large numbers as slaves. Kolchin reveals that, while the plantation slavery of what was to become the South developed distinctively (and primarily to cultivate tobacco and cotton), it had much in common with the plantation slavery of the Caribbean (where sugar was the primary crop). By about 1770, American slavery was concentrated mostly in the South, though it existed in all of the American colonies, and, as time passed, relationships between slaves and masters changed as second- generation slaves lost much of their African culture and became Americanized. In the US--in contrast to the Caribbean--slaves lived longer, developed considerable occupational diversity, and became acculturated, particularly in their absorption of Protestantism. The Revolutionary era saw slavery threatened by Enlightenment ideology, but the institution survived more strongly than ever in the South and, during the 19th century, came to be perceived as fundamental to the Southern economy and way of life. Kolchin writes about slave life through the Civil War, and, not surprisingly, he sees slavery as leaving a legacy that has persisted throughout our own century. A clear and briskly written survey that puts slavery in context and explains its continuing impact on American life. -- Copyright ©1993, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Review

“A miraculous achievement . . . A concise, well-written, and sensibly argued survey of America's greatest shame.” ―The New Yorker

“Peter Kolchin's American Slavery is the best history of the 'peculiar institution' that I have ever read. Paying equal attention to the slaves and the slaveholders, it is both comprehensive and fair-minded. A master of comparative history, Kolchin brilliantly shows how American slavery was similar to, and at the same time different from, forced labor in Brazil, the Caribbean, and Russia. His splendid bibliographical essay is an indispensable guide to the vast and complex literature on slavery.” ―David Herbert Donald, Charles Warren Professor of American History Emeritus, Harvard University

“This is a brilliant and masterful synthesis of scholarship on the history of slavery in America. Kolchin not only pulls together all the relevant literature but also strikes out with his own perceptive and trenchant analyses.” ―August Meier, Kent State University

“A feast of deftly crafted interpretations of the many interrelated dimensions of a most complex institution that shaped and deeply scarred American society. Kolchin's masterful survey is by far the best I have seen. It will be hard to surpass.” ―David Barry Gaspar, Duke University

Outstanding Survey of American Slavery
By Amazon Customer
Kolchin offers his book as a concise, readable synthesis of the movements in the historiography of slavery in the United States. Influenced by the movement toward social and cultural history, he devotes considerable attention to slave life in the antebellum south and the effects of the particular situation of slavery in the United States in shaping slave culture. Kolchin also situates slavery in the U.S. in the context of the world wide institution with comparisons to the Caribbean, Brazil, and to the Russian serfs which both highlights the unique situation of American Slaves and emphasizes that the institution of slavery did not exist in a vacuum.
The book progresses chronologically from the 1619 arrival of slaves in Jamestown to a brief discussion of the end of slavery and the problems of reconstruction, with thematic treatments of slave life, white control and paternalism in antebellum slavery as well as white society, economy, and ideology in the American south.
In producing such a smooth synthesis, Kolchin admittedly sacrifices a certain amount of detail and nuance for the sake of flow and clarity. Disconcerting, at times is his lack of documentation, another victim of simplicity in Kolchin's approach. While accomplishing his goal of remaining clear and readable, the reader sometimes wishes for some assistance in discerning the origin or fuller development of a particular position or point. To his credit, Kolchin works references to the historiography into his text well, and he provides an exceedingly thorough bibliographical essay at the end, which is probably the strongest segment of the work. Still, the lack of documentation sometimes proves frustrating and thus counters the goal of smooth flow in the text.
In the final analysis, however, Kolchin produces an excellent, readable volume that accomplishes his goal of a balanced narrative that shows how slavery evolved over time in the United States. So too has it accomplished its purpose in enlightening beginners and enkindling much scholarly discussion.

Excellent History of Slavery in the USA
By R. Albin
Over the past 50 years, the study of slavery has been one of the most dynamic and contentious areas in American History. A large volume of first-rate scholarship now exists on many aspects of North American slavery. This excellent book is a successful effort to synthesize the large volume of information on North American slavery. The book is organized chronologically, beginning with the Colonial period and progressing through the Revolution and the Antebellum period. Kolchin does an excellent job of describing the historical evolution of slavery in the USA. Another meritorious aspect is that Kolchin is an expert on the comparative history of slavery and provides useful comparative perspectives by comparing North American slavery with the features of other unfree societies. Kolchin is a clear writer and the book is very well organized. There is an excellent annotated bibliography which is a fine guide for readers interested in more specialized works on this topic. This is a must read for anyone interested in American History.

The Institutes, translated and annotated by Boniface Ramsey, by St. John Cassian

A companion to John Cassian's well-received Conferences in the Ancient Christian Writers series, the Institutes, known also as The Institutes of the Cenobia and the Remedies for the Eight Principal Vices, is the first written work of John Cassian, who had an immense influence on Western monasticism, and, by extension, on Western civilization.

The Institutes is made up of two sections. In the first, Cassian deals with the institutes and rules of Egyptian monasteries, including monastic garb and prayer. The second part, in eight books, treats the eight principal vices and describes how to counter them, infused with the metaphor of the monk as athlete, competing in a contest.

Taken together, the Conferences and the Institutes constitute a whole, a set, that knows no parallel in ancient Christian literature. This superior translation is an invaluable addition to academic, theological and historical studies, and will enrich anyone interested in the history of spirituality and asceticism.

perfection of apostolic love
By Daniel B. Clendenin
Like many early Christian writers, the life of John Cassian (c. 360-c. 435) remains shrouded in the mists of forgotten history. He was probably born in present day Romania (Dacia). When he was about twenty he traveled with his friend Germanus to Bethlehem where he joined a monastery. From Bethlehem Cassian and Germanus made at least two extended visits to the famous monastics down in Egypt (by some estimates they spent ten years there), and from there moved on to Constantinople. In Constantinople the bishop John Chrysostom ordained Cassian to the diaconate some time around the year 400, at which time he traveled to Rome to courier some letters and was ordained a priest by Pope Innocent I. Cassian later settled in Marseilles, where he founded two monasteries, and wrote three books. His Institutes, along with its much longer companion volume entitled Conferences (some 700 pages), chronicle the riches of early Egyptian monasticism based upon his considerable personal experiences and acquaintances, and in so doing transplanted that monastic influence in the West.

Compared to the Conferences, the Institutes ("teaching" or "guiding principle" worthy of emulation) is a simple book that is composed of two rather unrelated parts. In the first four "books," Cassian describes the nature and symbolic significance of the monastic garb, explains their regimen of day and night canonical prayers, and then provides a fascinating first hand account purportedly from Abba Pinufius about the reception of a new "renunciant" into the monastery. Books five to twelve then analyze the eight principal vices--gluttony, fornication, avarice, anger, sadness, acedia ("a wearied or anxious heart" that suggests close parallels to what today would pass for clinical depression), vainglory, and pride.

Throughout the Institutes Cassian contrasts the outward and external aspects of monasticism with the inner heart of a person, that place where genuine transformation occurs. The collected wisdom of practical experience, as opposed to mere theory, informed monastic life. Cassian is also clearly eager to place himself in the mainstream of monastic tradition, and to avoid minority opinions and practices: "The opinion of a few must not be preferred to nor must it prejudice the common practice of all." Whether discussing a monk's ambition for clerical rank, the anger in one's heart that can flare even at an inanimate object like a dull penknife, or the horror of "crushing sadness," Cassian can be a master of human observation and psychological insight, often mixed with humor. Here, for example, he describes the silence that characterized night time prayers: "There is no spitting, no annoying clearing of throats, no noisy coughing, no sleepy yawning emitted from gaping and wide-open mouths, no groans and not even any sighs to disturb those in attendance."

Although every person, place, time, and culture is different, and so the externals of habits and practices will rightly differ, the goal of these monastics that remains fixed for us today is "the perfection of apostolic love." Elsewhere Cassian uses the language of human health and wholeness, as when he refers to "integrity of heart" or "a state of integral health." In reading Cassian's firsthand accounts of some of the earliest and most famous monks, one is humbled by their zeal of renunciation as they explored just what the words of Jesus mean: "Whoever does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me" (Matthew 10:38).

Egyptian Monastic Life
By Mark Schmittle
Cassian was a 4th/5th Century religious and priest who founded two monasteries in Western Europe. Later in life he wrote extensively of his experience of Egyptian and Palestinian monasticism. He holds the Egyptian form of cenobitic life as the ideal from which Western monastic communities could learn much. The work is divided into two parts: his description of the institutes or guiding principles of Egyptian monasticism; and in the second part of the book he describes the eight principal vices and their remedies. The book was written several decades after his experience in Egypt and Palestine and so we are depending upon Cassian's ability to recall accurately and objectively events from a somewhat distant past. One gets a first-hand glimpse into the life of the early desert fathers and the spiritual combat or "athletic competition" they engage in.

It is the notion of obedience that stands out in this work. The obedience of the monk to his spiritual father as representative of the monk's single-minded desire to accomplish God's will. Cassian shows that being one with Christ in obedience to the Father's will was what the monks of Egypt aspired to above all else.

The book is more descriptive than systematic in nature and therefore quite easy to read.

A joy, a consolation and a commanding power to arise and to rejoin the good fight
By Love Thy Enemy
Saint John Cassian is best remembered for two lengthy studies of monastic life and moral theology, the first being this one, The Institutes, which presents systematically how the earliest monasteries in Palestine and Egypt operated, plus an examination of eight deadly sins, including gluttony, fornication (now translated into English, as it was not in an earlier Victorian era), pride, avarice, anger, vainglory, sadness and acedia, though in a more structured order from the physical to the most spiritual offenses.

His other most well known work is the The Conferences, also available in this series, a dialogic and thus less structured though much longer meditation on the object of the monastic life: purity of heart in all of its manifestations. This great series from the Newman Press, an imprint of the excellent Catholic Publishing House Paulist Press, presents all of Cassian's writings in a very clear and accurate translation by the Dominican Father, the Reverend Boniface Ramsey, of Manhattan.

Of Cassian I had earlier only encountered the Conferences, in French, in Solesmes, some 33 years ago, and would gratefully have read this present translation into English with excellent annotation, also by Father Ramsey, OP.

The first four books of the Institutes were written by Cassian at the request of a Bishop in southern France (then called Gaul) some seventeen hundred years ago, in order to establish and regulate monasteries there, as Cassian had lived as a monk first in Bethlehem, with frequent journeys to the monasteries in northern Egypt (site of the The Desert Fathers as in BEnedicta Ward's Sayings of the Early Christian Monks or The Wisdom of the Desert: Sayings from the Desert Fathers of the Fourth Century (Shambhala Library)). Therefore in these first four books of the Institutes (referring to the orders established by the Desert Fathers) Cassian reveals with as great a detail as his memory can provide (throughout he remains monastically humble yet direct) how the monks lived, worked and prayed, and the content of their regular prayers.

I find it very exciting to read, with such clarity of translation, the hows and whys of the monastic life, including the daily hours and order of the psalms. It is a great joy to me now to read these origins, so ancient and yet still lived by so pitiful few. We see here clearly the origins even of The Rule of Saint Benedict and Rb 1980: The Rule of st Benedict, as Saint BEnedict himself frequently refers to the work of Cassian and recommends the reading of the Conferences. Both Cassian and Benedict amazingly urge the reading and following of Saint Basil, as in The Fathers Speak: St Basil the Great, st Gregory of Nazianzus, st Gregory of Nyssa, etc.

This collection of four books, therefore might be of interest only to those of us who love the monastic life. The following eight books of the Institutes examine deadly sins and must be of interest to all Christians and those seeking the path to peace, and serve as a profound warning and guide for us even today. Therefore I strongly recommend this book to every reader as helpful and instructive and a strong shield of lectio divina. Please read this book and find peace, even today.

Although it contains no Imprimatur nor Nihil Obstat, it is difficult to imagine any believer so scrupulous as to find seriously this book avoidable on doctrinal grounds, as for nearly two millenia it has formed the backbone of our living the Gospel and served as the source for so many other orthodox sources. The Catholic Paulist Press is clearly itself above reproach, and Father Ramsey, who translates so clearly and accurately here, and who annotates briefly yet very helpfully, is of that great teaching order, the Dominicans, which also brought to our Church such great theologians and writers as Saint Thomas Aquinas and the Reverend Father Edward Schilebeeckx, OP (of whom please see his Christ the Sacrament of the Encounter With God, The Eucharist, Jesus: An experiment in Christology and his Christ: The Experience of Jesus as Lord, Mary, Mother of the Redemption (New Testament for Spiritual Reading) and Mary: Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow: Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow Translated Maria for starters).

Father of the Fatherless
By Richard Davis
I am so very pleased with this authorized Biography of Fr. Baker. Having been raised in Buffalo, and so familiar with Fr. Baker and Our Lady of Victory Basilica and Homes of Charity, I am sure many will be as deeply moved as I of the amazing life story of this wonderful, saintly man of God. I hope his cause for Sainthood progresses for the uplifting of the church and faith of the People of God.

Fairly solid book on the life of the Venerable Father Nelson Baker.
By HappyDaze11
As part of my travels up and down the old American rust-belt, I've become more and more fascinated by the remnants of places like Detroit, Toledo and Buffalo. These cities had the best of everything a mere 80 years ago, orchestras, ballets, good, high paying factory jobs and cultural centers - that are all largely gone. Relating to that are the shrinking remnants of a massive Roman Catholic apparatus and infrastructure that supported immigrants, preserved the culture of Europe, built extensive parochial school networks, hospitals, orphanages, and the like - often in magnificent buildings that rival all but the greatest churches of Europe, that are now gradually being town down, etc. Further along with that are the experiences of large Catholic working class communities that existed - and its in this niche I first learned of Fr. Baker and Our Lady of Victory Basilica in Lackawana, NY which is kind of a sub-city in South Buffalo along Lake Erie.

If someone could be said to have moved mountains in the name of Christ over the course of his life - it would be Fr. Baker. His life span encompassed a short stint as a Union soldier in the Civil Way and straight through to the Great Depression until he passed away in 1936. In a certain sense, Fr. Baker lived, worked and died during a period of non-stop expansion of both the number of Catholics in the United States, their prestige in this country, and their expansion into politics, the army, civic life, etc.

Fr. Baker developed and instituted what would become a massive orphan asylum back in 1909 which ended up taking Catholic boys from all over the United States and Canada that lost their parents, or in the case of severe poverty or neglect, it looks like he took those poor boys in as well. With the help of an Order of Nuns and teaching brothers, the orphan asylum was filled to the gills and out of that clay, Fr. Baker turned so many of these kids around and gave them a future - teaching them a trade, literacy, etc. There are several good photographs of Fr. Baker and some of the "Baker Boys" from 100 years ago. When you realize these poor kids had lost their parents - it will break your heart - but you realize what Fr. Baker did was to move a mountain such that many of the boys who went through the orphanage ended up becoming Priests themselves.

As Fr. Baker grew, he ended up opening an infant home and a Protectory for unwed pregnant women as well as establishing a portal where women could turn over their infants anonymously to the church. He then commissioned the best in Italian stonemasons and artisans to build Our Lady of Victory Basilica, which is a magnificent church rivaling anything in Europe. Lucky for us - is that the Spirit of Vatican II and the absolutely terrible Bishops of upstate New York did not get the chance to gut the Basilica. Along the way, he battled New York State regulatory authorities, the depression, and various levels of anti-Catholic bigotry. Fr. Baker's efforts also brought a lot of African Americans into the Church as well.

This book is listed as the "authorized biography" so I am assuming there was some control over the content selected in the book. The book also seems to denigrate the long held belief in the miraculous nature of Fr. Baker's selection and request to drill for a gas pocket on the grounds of the church. Gas was hit at an incredible depth. After standard gas drilling depths were hit in this area, which has no other gas extraction operations, Fr. Baker insisted (and put a lot of money at risk in doing so) that the drill keep running. They hit a gas pocket at a crazy depth and the gas line still works, or so I hear. I took a look at the gas plant two years ago and it seemed to be in operation.

In criticism, the book is an overview. A thorough exposition of the details of Fr. Baker's life would probably be 3000 pages as opposed to the 300 pages of this book. The content in this book is extensively footnoted and from examination of same, a huge stockpile of primary source material was used in compiling the many anecdotes contained in the book. The shorter length of this book may have to do with an effort to spark interest in Fr. Baker's canonization as he is generally unknown outside of north western New York. I am from downstate New York and only learned of him by accident. Its also a shame that the Paulist Press got to publish the book - the Paulist Press is a religious press, I just haven't figure out what religion.

After my trips up to Buffalo, I have a Holy Card of Fr. Baker in my Missal, and I think of him quite often. Its a long drive, but the Basilica is something everyone should see. Fr. Baker's tomb is inside now and I do hope they make him a Saint!

Not All Black and White: Affirmative Action, Race, and American Values, by Christopher F. Edley

Christopher Edley, who served as point man for President Clinton's review of affirmative action, offers a spirited, lively analysis of one of the most vexing and contented issues in politics today. As he did for the President, so here, in a cogent, persuasive book for general readers and serious voters, Edley considers all the relevant legal data, social-science evidence, public-policy developments, and private-sector practice, then makes his eloquent, powerful case.

From Publishers Weekly
Harvard law professor Edley served as point man for President Clinton's affirmative action review and helped shape the "mend it, don't end it" policy the president proclaimed. His thorough, useful book shows an academic's sense of nuance and complexity. Edley acknowledges that affirmative action has risks and costs, but believes that the societal benefits justify them. While some posit that affirmative action merely remedies discrimination, Edley asserts that it also promotes "inclusion"?a term he prefers to the loaded word diversity. He warns cogently that class-based affirmative action will not close our racial gaps, though his defense of affirmative action for Hispanics and Asians could be better buttressed. Edley is most useful when he lays out distinctions, such as in suggesting that the more affirmative action relates to opportunity?as in education?the more acceptable it may be. Ultimately, the author is pragmatic: some forms of affirmative action may create white male victims (he uses the term "bystanders"), but such programs, he believes, should be minimized in favor of broader, more politically acceptable ones.

Review
This treatise on affirmative action and values takes a different approach than most, rejecting simple pro and con argument in favor of making a case for mending and revamping the affirmative action concept. These laws are essential to social justice in this country, Edley argues - but not as they are. Flaws are analyzed and suggestions made for renewal. -- Midwest Book Review

Whether or not you agree, this is a powerful arguement
By Walter Mason
This is by far the most in depth and comprehensive arguement for Affirmative Action. Edley manages to write about this worn-thin issue with a new and interesting angle. Factually compelling as well. This is a must read for anybody at all interested in the contreversies of race-politics.

From the Publisher
The most heart heartwarming storyteller of our time returns with his lovely wife Helen, irrepressible old friends Tristan and Siegfreid, and a wonderful Yorkshire community--human and animal-bursting with love. Joy surprise and hilarious adventure abound in another touching, delightful memoir by the world's most beloved veterinarian.

From the Back Cover
With each book more impressive than the last, James Herriot once again brings us the magical beauty of Yorkshire and his heartwarming experiences as a country veterinarian. These new stories provide a grand finale to the books that began with ALL CREATURES GREAT AND SMALL--tales told with grace and magnanimity, and woven through with love.

It is just after World War II, and James has returned from the R.A.F. to do battle with the diseases and injuries that befall the farm animals and pets of Skeldale and the surrounding moors. Four-year-old Jimmy Herriot, Humphrey Cobb and his little beagle Myrtle, Bella the milk cow who is in desperate trouble, Norman the book-loving veterinary assistant, and Jack Scott, the soft-hearted farmer, all join old favorites Siegfried and Helen among the green hills of Yorkshire, as James takes an unforgettable voyage to Russia on a freighter with 383 pedigree sheep. Touching our hearts with laughter and wisdom...lifting our spirits with the compassion and goodness, James Herriot never fails to delight.

LOVE THESE WONDERFUL ANIMAL STORIES--UPLIFTING AND WARM
By Luchi1012
I can't say enough about the James Herriot books. Through a very stressful time in my life, years ago, I know these books about this gentle and sweet vet and his collection of animals and warm stories, pulled me through. I used to turn to them when I had terrible stress in my life and I could totally relax. I now keep several of them in my Kindle just to have something warm and comfortable to turn to anytime. Beautiful stories, beautifully written, lovingly written. Everyone can enjoy these warm, fulfilling, uplifting adventures of a country vet.

More in the life of the Yorkshire vet to enjoy his family, patients, and life.
By Catherine
I read the first 3 books (should say devoured! ) when I was a young girl. I desperately wanted to be a veterinarian! Sadly, that never hapoened. But was able to live vicariously through his books. Imagine my surprise when I found out he had written more!

Best bedtime stories ever
By Laura Halladay
Best bedtime stories ever
I found the Herriot books in an airport shop and whiled away many otherwise tedious hours laughing out loud at his gentle humor and obvious affection for both the human and animal characters within.

A Beautiful Book
By Amazon Customer
This is a beautiful book in every way. The subject material is so thorough and presented in a logical manner. Every chapter has notes at the end to further explain points that are touched on in the chapter but not completely needed to explain the section presented, and it is certainly worth it to read every note! I feel I have learned an incredible amount about Christ, through his life, teachings, and other scriptural accounts from reading this book. Regarding this copy in particular, the cover artwork is gorgeous. The book itself looks wonderful, and has a clean, easy to read typeface. The only change I would have made in my purchase would be to consider a hardback instead of paperback as this is certainly a book I will be referencing for the rest of my life.

Read it, Enjoy it, Learn from it
By Muhle
An incredible study and commentary on the life of Jesus Christ and His teachings. This book is a fantastic complement to the Bible and really goes deep into the New Testament to work out the details of Christ's life. Now, whether or not you are religious, you should read this book to gain a greater understanding of the man whose teachings (and legacy) underpin much of the Western world. Just as a study of Muhammad, Buddha, Confucius, etc. would give you a greater appreciation of the faith and beliefs of others, the study of Jesus The Christ will enlighten and expand your understanding of Christianity.

Easy to read. Explains well the mission of Christ.
By Scooter Pie
My niece wrote to me asking for help in understanding the life and mission of Jesus Christ. Many years earlier, this book answered that for me, like nothing else could or has. In fact, I only value the scriptures more highly than the information and teachings in this book. So I mailed her a copy. She found it a gripping and inspiring read and has thanked me for it several times. She is a busy 18-year-old.

Great book. But it has to be slowly read. Read more than once. A lot of things to think about, to meditate, to contemplate etc. That kinda book. Nice read.

Caution
By Amazon Customer
In my opinion this text is one that should be read from an Orthodox perspective. There are many items within that if you are not Orthodox could be taken out of perspective (5th step). The content of the text is excellent and is so widely acclaimed in the Orthodox world that it is commonly read in many Orthodox monasteries in addition to laity during lent. So be caution if you choose to delve into this book, and you may not want to lean on your own understanding of the content.

An incredible guide in the spiritual life
By P. J. Rohrmann
When I first read Saint John Climacus' work, I read this edition and was somewhat disappointed with it, though I did not know why. An orthodox monastic suggested I get the Holy Transfiguration Monastery edition. The latter translation is translated in the older style and thus seems more authentic. As I recall the version here seemed to have too much of the translator's own interpretaions in it. That was offputting to me.
This book gives guidance as to how to strip oneself of the passions of the old man and put on the new man.
I reread this work every Lent and am always amazed at the insights it gives. When I don't understand a passage I just move on and know that the insight will come at a later reading. The book gives incredible insight into the passions. If one is working on a specific passion like anger or vainglory, the book can be a remarkable help.
This book is read every evening in one monastery I know of, and monastics reread it every Lent.
After writing this review I realized that the five star rating I gave it is for the Holy Transfiguration Monastery edition. I would have to give the Paulist Press version a lower rating for the above-mentiioned reasons. Maybe three stars?
