In 1956 two Bell Labs scientists discovered the scientific formula for getting rich. One was mathematician Claude Shannon, neurotic father of our digital age, whose genius is ranked with Einstein’s. The other was John L. Kelly Jr., a Texas-born, gun-toting physicist. Together they applied the science of information theory—the basis of computers and the Internet—to the problem of making as much money as possible, as fast as possible.

Shannon and MIT mathematician Edward O. Thorp took the “Kelly formula” to Las Vegas. It worked. They realized that there was even more money to be made in the stock market. Thorp used the Kelly system with his phenomenonally successful hedge fund, Princeton-Newport Partners. Shannon became a successful investor, too, topping even Warren Buffett’s rate of return. Fortune’s Formula traces how the Kelly formula sparked controversy even as it made fortunes at racetracks, casinos, and trading desks. It reveals the dark side of this alluring scheme, which is founded on exploiting an insider’s edge.

Fortune's Formula is a fascinating study of the connections between such seemingly unrelated topics as gambling, information theory, stock investing, and applied mathematics. The story involves the stunning brainpower of men such as MIT professor Claude Shannon, who single-handedly invented information theory, the science behind the Internet and all digital media; Ed Thorpe; and John Kelly of Bell Laboratories, who developed the "Kelly criterion," a now-legendary investment strategy for maximizing growth while controlling risk. Initially, Shannon and Thorpe took Kelly's theory to Las Vegas and applied it to roulette and blackjack. Later, they took it to Wall Street and cleaned up--Shannon made a personal fortune while Thorpe created the highly successful hedge firm Princeton-Newport Partners. They both discovered that Kelly's system was particularly effective when applied to arbitrage (minute price differences that result from market inefficiencies). As Poundstone ably demonstrates, the merits of Kelly's criterion are still hotly debated today.

Poundstone has a tendency to meander in his writing, but his asides are so revealing and interesting that they add, rather than detract, from the narrative. The book also includes a cast of fascinating and colorful characters as varied as Ivan Boesky, Warren Buffet, Rudolph Giuliani, and notorious mobsters such as Bugsy Siegel and Meyer Lansky. In explaining the lasting impact of the work done by Shannon, Thorpe, and Kelly, Poundstone even explains Kelly's system for those wishing to follow his formula, offering readers both theoretical and practical lessons. Whether viewed as a how-to guide or straight scientific and financial history, Fortune's Formula proves an entertaining and illuminating analysis of "the most successful gambling system of all time." --Shawn Carkonen

From Publishers Weekly
In 1961, MIT mathematics professor Ed Thorp made a small Vegas fortune by "counting cards"; his 1962 bestseller, Beat the Dealer, made the phrase a household word. With Claude Shannon, the father of information theory, Thorp next conquered the roulette tables. In this prosaic but fascinating cultural history, Poundstone (How Would You Move Mt. Fuji?) tells not only what they did but how they did it. For roulette, Poundstone shows, Thorp and Shannon used a betting scheme invented by Shannon's Bell Labs colleague John Kelly, eventually applying Kelly's technique to investing, resulting in long-term records of extraordinary return with low risk. (Thorp revealed the secret in 1966's Beat the Market, but investors proved harder to persuade than blackjack players.) Many other characters figure into Poundstone's entertaining saga: a forgotten French mathematician, two Nobel Prize–winning economists who declared war on the Kelly criterion, Rudy Giuliani, assorted mobsters, and winners and losers in all types of investing and gambling games. The subtitle is not a tease: the book explains and analyzes Kelly's system for turning small advantages into great wealth. The system works, but requires unusual amounts of patience, discipline and courage. The book is good fun for the rest of us.

The Ongoing Epic of the Kelly Criterion for Risk Management.
By mirasreviews
"Fortune's Formula" tells the story of the Kelly Criterion -through the experiments, ideas, wins, and losses of those who have espoused it and who have derided it, at race tracks, black jack tables, sports books, and, finally, on Wall Street. The Kelly Criterion is a risk management formula published in 1956 by Bell Labs information theorist John Kelly, Jr. that dictates how much of your bankroll you should bet based on your edge divided by the odds so that you will have zero risk of ruin no matter how bad your luck is, while increasing wealth faster than any other betting system. It does not address what bets you should make, which is another matter entirely. Instead of writing a simple analysis of the Kelly Criterion, author William Poundstone brings this story alive by relating the histories of key figures who have used, promoted, or criticized the Kelly Criterion: information theorists, economists, traders, gamblers, and gangsters. Some readers may find this approach unfocused and unnecessary. But I think the personalities lend "Fortune's Formula" an epic quality and place the Kelly Criterion firmly in the context of real life, with real consequences, as opposed to the realm of abstruse theories that never leave the halls of academe.

The men whom "Fortune's Formula" casts as protagonists are Claude Shannon, the MIT scholar who invented information science and who amassed a small fortune as a buy-and-hold investor, typically making 28% per year on a small portfolio, and Ed Thorpe, author of 1962's gambling classic "Beat the Dealer", 1967's "Beat the Market", co-founder of Princeton-Newport Partners fund (1969-1988) and founder of Ridgeline Partners (1994-2002) quant fund. Ed Thorpe's transformation from MIT egghead to black jack sharp to Wall Street wizard in an ongoing theme, as Thorpe is an immensely successful advocate of the Kelly Criterion -and he is still alive. There is unfortunately little information on John Kelly, because he died in 1965 at the age of 41. The key Kelly challenger is 1970 Nobel Laureate economist Paul Samuelson, who probably overstates his case in calling the Kelly Criterion a "complete swindle" when the point of disagreement seems to be the concept of "utility" in long-tern outcome. Whatever one thinks of Samuelson's outspoken arrogance, he is certainly entertaining. Mobster Manny Kimmel makes an appearance, as do traders Ivan Boesky, Michael Milken, and John Meriwether, as well as numerous information theorists.

William Poundstone obviously has a point of view. He is an advocate of the Kelly Criterion, believing that it produces better results than any other betting system over the long haul while withstanding even the most unlikely confluences of catastrophe that have a way of manifesting themselves periodically. He doesn't support efficient market hypothesis. He thinks people can, and have, made money consistently on the stock market. -But that you need a darned good method of managing risk to do it, a better method than Value at Risk reports. "Fortune's Formula"'s fascination is not only in its history of the Kelly Criterion, but in the realization that a risk management formula has so many seemingly disparate applications. As Poundstone says, "The idea pops up in the strangest places."

This book proved that most mathematicians live in a different ...
By Lawrence Pearce
This book proved that most mathematicians live in a different world than our reality. Example: The mathematician who claimed that you could win money if you bet on every horse in the race. However, he failed to account for the money deducted by the race track, which would disprove his claim. The biggest laugh comes from the story of the two Nobel Prize winning mathematicians who started a hedge fund. It's worth the price of this used book.

It takes exceptionally smart people to make truly massive blunders
By Dave Snell
This book is a concise look at the evolution of formal investment theory, with continual contextual references to its ties to gambling and to organized crime. It also is a hilarious and insightful history of gambling from the Bernoulli's in the 1700s through the hedge fund traders of the late 1990's.

The author devotes over 50 pages to notes and the index. This was appreciated since I wanted to look up more about so many of the anecdotes he included.

Mr. Poundstone poignantly describes the downfall of high-flying firms such as LTCM, where the investment wizards went from the darlings of Wall Street to the dredges of the investment community in large part because they were so clever; and they started to believe they were infallible.

One LTCM road-show presentation was held at the insurance company Conseco in Indianapolis. Andrew Chow, a Conseco derivatives trader, interrupted Scholes. "There aren't that many opportunities," Chow objected. "You can't make that kind of money in Treasury markets."
Scholes snapped: "You're the reason - because of fools like you we can." (Page 281)

Warren Buffett marveled at how "ten or 15 guys with an average IQ of maybe 170" could get themselves "into a position where they can lose all their money." That was much the sentiment of Daniel Bernoulli, way back in 1738, when he wrote: "A man who risks his entire fortune acts like a simpleton, however great may be the possible gain." (Page 291)

He also points out the real world flaws in some theoretically appealing scams. The St. Petersburg Wager seems mathematically correct; yet it overlooks a vitally important constraint (pages 182-184). Another is the unfounded weight we unconsciously give to historical returns, as evidenced by his retelling of another Warren Buffett story:
In a 1984 speech, Buffett asked his listeners to imagine that all 215 million Americans pair off and bet a dollar on the outcome of a coin toss. The one who calls the toss incorrectly is eliminated and pays his dollar to the one who was correct.
The next day, the winners pair off and play the same game with each other, each now betting $2. Losers are eliminated and that day's winners end up with $4. The game continues with a new toss at doubled stakes each day. After twenty tosses, 215 people will be left in the game. Each will have over a million dollars.
According to Buffett, some of these people will write books on their methods: "How I Turned a Dollar into a Million in Twenty Days Working Thirty Seconds a Morning." Some will badger ivory-tower economists who say it can't be done: "If it can't be done, why are there 215 us?" "Then some business school professor will probably be rude enough to bring up the fact that if 215 million orangutans had engaged in a similar exercise, the result would be the same - 215 egotistical orangutans with 20 straight winning flips." (Page 314)

The author follows the lives of a few major contributors to investment theory, information theory, and betting theory: Claude Shannon, who invented Information Theory and paved the way for the digital computer age; John Kelly, who developed the formula for gains with no possibility of ruin; and Edward Thorpe, who built upon these findings and beat the roulette wheels, the blackjack tables and the investment fund managers.
It's a fast read - only 329 pages before the notes and index. I highly recommend it!

From Publishers Weekly
History professor Hunt (Ideology and U.S. Foreign Policy, etc.) first encountered the "real Vietnam" in the early 1960s when, as a college student, he spent two summers in Saigon, where his father was stationed in the U.S. military mission. Expecting to find an endangered nation that could be rescued by can-do Americans, he instead saw a country engaged in a complex struggle that had already confounded the French. Now, 20 years after the war's end, Hunt?who served in the Army but not in Vietnam, and who currently teaches at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill?has undertaken a "long-delayed exercise in exorcism," in which he examines why the U.S. became involved in Vietnam. The result is a scholarly, clearly argued work that presents the various decisions to increase American commitment as having been made neither by maniacal warmongers nor by righteous visionaries. Rather, Hunt contends, those decisions?for good or ill?were made within the context of the times, by leaders blind to the fact that an iron-willed enemy was prepared to absorb our worst blows until we, like the French and the Chinese before us, abandoned their land. Drawing on new documentation from Hanoi, Washington and the LBJ library in Texas, Hunt offers an intense, penetrating study that will likely inspire continued reasoned examination of the gestation of a national tragedy.

From Library Journal
Hunt (Frontier Defense and the Open Door, LJ 3/1/74), who teaches history at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, has written what is perhaps the shortest book available about the U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War. In fewer than 145 pages, he provides a scant outline of major events surrounding this country's most divisive war. In this limited format, he merely reviews well-documented events that occurred throughout the Truman through the Nixon administrations; no new facts or conclusions emerge. It is difficult to imagine what audience would benefit from such a cursory treatment of a very complex topic. Those who know nothing about the war will be confused, while informed readers will be left wondering just what point the author is trying to make. All libraries will be better served by any number of other titles already on the shelf. Not recommended.?Robert J. Favini, Bentley Coll. Lib., Waltham, Mass.

From Booklist
A generation after the withdrawal of the U.S. from Vietnam, the fault line dividing Left from Right remains unbridged in analyzing the debacle. The Right sees a loss of will, ascribing our failure to politicians, who forced the military to wage a "limited" fight, which handcuffed the proper prosecution of the war. The Left sees a failure borne of illusions of U.S. omnipotence and arrogance. Hunt, a prominent East Asian scholar, has written a compact, useful volume that clearly places him in the latter camp. He breaks no new ground here; the concept of a policy driven by rigid anti-Communism, arrogance, and naiviteregarding "nation building" is hardly original. David Halberstam, in The Best and the Brightest, illustrated these flaws more extensively and eloquently. Still, Hunt's book has great value for the general reader. His portrayals of some of the critical but lesser-known men who gave impetus to our escalation are particularly striking. His spare but direct narrative style adds to the impression of a train rushing blindly onward to an inevitable crack-up. Jay Freeman

The Losing Battle
By J. Seth Witmer
Michael Hunt has written a compact yet thorough history of the U. S. involvement in Vietnam. Hunt's premise, in effect, is that due to ignorance, arrogance, and ethnocentrism, U.S. leaders are prevented from a real understanding of Vietnam before embarking on a series of ultimately tragic decisions.
The title of the work suggests two themes. One, Lyndon Johnson made the crucial decisions and thus made the war his own and is therefore to blame for the resulting quagmire. Two, while it is LBJ's war, it is actually part of a larger struggle, the Cold War, an effort in which the United States ultimately prevailed. This is, perhaps, the proper prism through which Vietnam should be viewed.
This work is particularly strengthened and distinguished by Professor Hunt's exploration of the major criticisms of Lyndon Johnson's prosecution of the Vietnam War. He concludes that Johnson was not candid with the American public, and that he proceeded knowing full well the risks involved. Additionally, while Johnson did go to war with clear goals, utilizing power decisively, he was ultimately strait-jacketed by the times in which he lived.

An explanation of the Vietnam War.
By Kevin M Quigg
As one of the previous reviewers have already noted, Dr. Hunt spends a lot of time telling us how Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy and Nixon made decisions that ultimately led the slide into the Vietnam War. What Hunt does say in one chapter is that Johnson made the critical decisions which ultimately led to the disaster of the Vietnam War. At a little over one hundred pages, the author describes the slide into the war with clear concise readable pages. The Vietnam War was one of the battles of the Cold War. He also shows how poor leadership on Kennedy's part led us into this disaster, and how a poor game plan kept us there past the 1968 election (Nixon's fault). There is a lot of blame to go around between both parties and presidents. However Johnson was the key decision maker.

This a compact readable book. It makes its arguments concise and to the point. This a nice diplomatic history of the slide to war with the Vietnamese Communists.

A must read if you are interested in our involvement in Vietnam
By Peter Raymond
The best book I've read on Vietnam and our involvement. One of the significant aspects of this book is the character development. He not only delves deep into Lyndon Johnson's motivation but also Ho Chi Min and the various leaders of South Vietnam as well as the many Americans who contributed to our escalation of that war. Mr. Hunt made a very good case for why this war could not have ended in any other way other than how it did.

Good story, but lacking in comparison
By A Customer
Really, I wish I would have bought the original. Strangely enough we had the original version borrowed from the library in the house when this book arrived. Even my 2 1/2 year old daughter prefers the original. It is so much better. The details are more vivid. The language more interesting. This version isn't bad; it just isn't AS good.

Dumbing down a classic
By me
The little engine that could was always a favourite in our house- one of those books you read ad nauseum to your toddler! We lost our copy somewhere on a trans pacific flight and so i suggested a new copy as a birthday gift for my 3yo. She unknowingly bought this copy instead. My 8yo found 42 differences between the two versions (from memory...from the ad nauseum reading). I can't figure out what was difficult to read about the original. one reviewer mentioned sentences that continued on to the next page (which is how many of our older books are written)- but how does this necessitate changing the eloquence of the original text? "Red cheeked apples" becomes "fat red apples", "And off he steamed indignantly to the roundhouse where engines live when they are not working" becomes "off went the shiny new engine without another word", even the climax of the story, "i think i can, i think i can" which has to be written about 20 times in the original (each one getting more and more confident) is reduced to 3 "i think i can's"! Why do we feel the need to dumb down a classic to fit the cartoony twaddle that kids are fed today? If we feed them quality children's literature they will gobble it up (and prefer it over the fluff of "easy to read" versions). We wil stay will the original.

the joy, the sense of foreboding
By Raymond Bullock
This was an inside view of Mother Mary's heart from a sensitive poet's heart. It shows how a woman of intense Jewish spirituality in the1st century would have reacted to the request from God that she become the Mother of the Messiah, the one who is to come. The author captures: the excitement, the joy, the sense of foreboding, her need for legitimacy, her need to rely on her spouse on earth - St. Joseph, while complying with all of the requisites of the Law for a woman in her position. Then, the almost unbearable tenseness and immense sorrow that slowly unfolds as Jesus leaves her and fulfills his mission. As it culminates with his condemnation and crucifixion, her suffering goes beyond the ability to describe, and Mary enters into a oneness with her Divine Son as he suffers and dies in front of her on the cross. This is a wonderful poetic account of a woman of enormous stature and it helps the reader to better appreciate Mary and her singular place in human history.

Beautiful Poetry
By sunnysbmom
This book is my favorite book of all time. It's not the easiest book to read because of the depth of the poetry. I typically will read just a few pages at a time and soak it all in.

Must Read - understand the heart of Our Blessed Mother.
By Patty Parma (pparma@accd.edu)
This book/poem beautifully illustrates the heart of Mary, Our Blessed Mother. The reader comes to understand her thoughts, emotions, and, especially, her silence as she watches Jesus grow, enter public life, be crucified and resurrected.
The book may be a little difficult to get into, but by the time Jesus is lost in the temple, you can't put the book down. Truly a wonderful insight into Mary as she "pondered these things in her heart."

Amazon.com Review
Ender Wiggin, the hero and scapegoat of mass alien destruction in Ender's Game, receives a chance at redemption in this novel. Ender, who proclaimed as a mistake his success in wiping out an alien race, wins the opportunity to cope better with a second race, discovered by Portuguese colonists on the planet Lusitania. Orson Scott Card infuses this long, ambitious tale with intellect by casting his characters in social, religious and cultural contexts. Like its predecessor, this book won both the Hugo and Nebula Awards.

From Publishers Weekly
Card's novel Ender's Game introduced Ender Wiggin, a young genius who used his military prowess to all but exterminate the "buggers," the first alien race mankind had ever encountered. Wiggin then transformed himself into the "Speaker for the Dead," who claimed it had been a mistake to destroy the alien civilization. Many years later, when a new breed of intelligent life forms called the "piggies" is discovered, Wiggin takes the opportunity to atone for his earlier actions. This long, rich and ambitious novel views the interplay between the races from the differing perspectives of the colonists, ethnologists, biologists, clergy, politicians, a computer artificial intelligence, the lone surviving bugger and the piggies themselves. Card is very good at portraying his characters in these larger, social, religious and cultural contexts. It's unfortunate, then, that many of the book's mysteries and dilemmas seem created just to display Ender's supposedly godlike understanding. A fine, if overlong, novel nonetheless.

Ender's Game? No. Impressive? Definitely.
By Dan Dean
I went through various stages of opinion while reading this book... First was, "Hey- why is this nothing like Ender's Game? Drats!" Then, "What is with all this Portuguese stuff, and religious garbage?" and "Why is Ender some kind of space-detective?" And so I began trudging through this book with a lack of enthusiasm. Then slowly but steadily, this story pulls you in. You don't mind the lack of Game's glorious action. This is a very mature piece.
I doubt that anyone will be able to read Ender's Game and stop there. You want more. Speaker for the Dead is where you have to go. I find it extremely hard to consider this a sequel, because never have I seen an author switch his style this drastically within one series. Card forces you to accept all of his changes, but those who adapt to this book are highly rewarded! I found myself involved with Card's characters quite alarmingly, and touched by his themes on so many levels.
One thing that really impressed me- Card takes our first intelligent contact with aliens and compares it with 16th century European explorers encountering the natives of South America. It shows the barriers of language, technology, religion, and misunderstandings -as well as mankind's need to control or dominate any new race it meets. This book is like a history lesson that teaches us not to make the same mistakes when we reach this point of our future. Very interesting.
There is no doubt I will be continuing this series.

A good part of the Ender Wiggin narrative
By Dan Cooper
The conclusion of Ender's quest to find a home for the bugger queen was gratifying for me. It felt morally satisfying and left room for further story development in a later novel.

The unique ecosystem of the planet and the life cycle of the piggies, in particular, was intriguing and well conceived. It was exciting to see the pieces come together.

I thought Ender's relationship with the AI Jane was helpful at points to the story line but her character was underdeveloped. It is diffIcult to understand why an AI of this magnitude would have an interest in Ender; or any human being, and how there could be a meaningful relationship between them. That could be a much bigger story.

Gay fan of Card
By biminconstruction
I was reading a few books when I started this. After a slow start it totally took over my attention and I didn't look at one of the other books until it was over. I feel like I love ender. Disappointing being gay and reading about the homophobic things the author has said, especially the irony that the book's message is to humanize the Other. But pushing that aside, a beautiful experience that made my day better every time I picked it up.

Jewish Destinies: Citizenship, State, and Community in Modern France, by Pierre Birnbaum

A trenchant analysis of the place of minorities in a national culture.

Can members of minority cultures be full and equal citizens of a democratic state? Or do community allegiances override loyalty to the state? And who defines a minority community-its members or the state? Pierre Birnbaum asks these crucial questions about France-a nation where 89 percent of the people feel that racism is widespread and 70 percent agree that there are "too many Arabs." Arabs are today's targets, but racism has also been directed at other groups, including Jews.

Jews became full citizens of France only at the Revolution, and historians have traditionally held that the state, in thus emancipating Jews and allowing them to join French society as individuals, severed the ties that had once bound the Jewish community together. But Birnbaum shows that the history of Jews in France-and of attitudes toward them-is not so linear. Rather, he finds that anti-Semitism has risen and fallen along with other forms of racism and xenophobia, and he argues that Jews in France today are once again viewed as members of an isolated community-no matter what their degree of assimilation. Birnbaum's conclusions about state and community have broad-reaching implications for all societies that struggle to incorporate minority groups-including the United States.

From Publishers Weekly
It's a truism that French Jews, the first granted equal rights in Europe, are less closely tied together than Jews in other lands. After all, one of the main champions of emancipating the Jews during the French Revolution, Abbe Henri Gregoire, did so in the hopes of converting them. In this series of essays, the author, a professor of political science at the Sorbonne, shows that the history and present of French Jews as a minority in relation to the larger community is much more complex. But Birnbaum considers this relationship in a curious, and limited, way: rather than retracing the history of French Jewry, most of the book tracks the history of anti-Semitism. Despite the desire to belong to France, the author notes that when anti-Semitism rears its ugly head, as during the Dreyfus Affair, when a French Jewish army officer was accused of treason, and during WWII, when a Nazi collaborationist regime ruled France, French Jewish intellectuals, despite their universalist leanings, demonstrate an allegiance to other Jews. Nor has the question of anti-Semitism disappeared: the author notes that while a majority of French citizens condemned the 1990 digging up and impaling of a Jewish body in the town of Carpentras, the event also created an anti-Semitic backlash. As the author puts it, for Jews "it is no small feat to negotiate the arduous path between citizenship and community, assimilation and identity." But a description of the history of what French Jews have created, rather than what they and their fellow French citizens have reacted to, would have helped readers better understand that path.

From Kirkus Reviews
While France enters the next millennium as an embattled multicultural society, like much of the rest of the West, Birnbaum (Political Science/the Sorbonne; Anti-Semitism in France, not reviewed) ponders the nation's Jews as a weathervane for social change. Although the Jews of France were emancipated by the Revolution, and their position in an ambiguously secular French society advanced further by Napoleon, their place in the nation has always been uncertain, often troubled. Birnbaum begins his series of interlocking essays with an examination of the evolution of the free Franco-Jewish community. Just as the society itself was ambiguous in its secularismafter all, the Jacobins had knocked the Church from its privileged place alongside the Bourbon thronethe status of another religious community was inevitably problematic as well. Jews found that they were able to rise as full participants in French civil society, but that freedom also made them more visible targets of virulent anti-Semitism. Birnbaum is most original and successful in his five pivotal essays on the poisonous atmosphere surrounding the Dreyfus affair. His detailed analysis of the anti-Dreyfusards, their opposition to the Republic, and their open and vicious anti-Semitism presents a different picture of L'Affaire than the one most familiar to Americans. Even more than the final essays on contemporary France, this section is pointedly suggestive about recent history. The Catholic Church's role in the anti-Dreyfus movements makes the post-WWII efforts of some Catholic priests to shield such enemies of France as Klaus Barbie and Marcel Papon less baffling. Regrettably, although his analyses are long on insight and intelligence, Birnbaum is a dry writer, and much of this important volume, despite its many resonances for Americas own multicultural debates, is a hard slog. -- Copyright ©2000, Kirkus Associates, LP. Review
“A remarkable account of an extraordinary phenomenon. In this excellent book, Pierre Birnbaum, one of the surest guides to the turbulent history of Jews in France, raises fundamental issues of identity, community, and citizenship that are inescapable in the search for a just and peaceful society.” – Michael R. Marrus, University of Toronto

An Interesting Way to Tackle French Jewish History
By Reuven Muller
Pierre Birnbaum's book has an envious quality among history books to transcend describing events by time but rather movements in thought. He describes events from as early as the French Revolution in the same breath as current happenings. He is not shy to express a viewpoint that strongly supports the French model of the Jewish Citizen. Birnbaum is confounded with the destiny of french Jewry because French Jews today do not all share his vision of the Republic. This Americanization of France (multi-culturism, etc.) and the traditions of the Sephardic immigrants frighten Birnbaum slightly, but he does not provide firm answers as to what exactly he is afraid of. The book also covers many overlooked topics through many primary sources.
