To Tell the Truth Freely: The Life of Ida B. Wells, by Mia Bay

Born to slaves in 1862, Ida B. Wells became a fearless antilynching crusader, women's rights advocate, and journalist. Wells's refusal to accept any compromise on racial inequality caused her to be labeled a "dangerous radical" in her day but made her a model for later civil rights activists as well as a powerful witness to the troubled racial politics of her era. Though she eventually helped found the NAACP in 1910, she would not remain a member for long, as she rejected not only Booker T. Washington's accommodationism but also the moderating influence of white reformers within the early NAACP. In the richly illustrated To Tell the Truth Freely, the historian Mia Bay vividly captures Wells's legacy and life, from her childhood in Mississippi to her early career in late-nineteenth-century Memphis and her later life in Progressive-era Chicago.

From Publishers Weekly
Bay (The White Image in the Black Mind) delineates journalist and antilynching crusader Ida B. Wellss life (1862–1931) and her passionate commitment to a range of causes so extensive that they defy easy summary. When her parents died in 1878, 16-year-old Wells became the head of her family, caring for her five siblings. After a brief stint teaching, she found her two callings—political activism and, more powerfully, journalism, becoming by the late 1880s one of the most prolific and well-known black female journalists of her day. In 1884, she sued the Chesapeake, Ohio and Southwestern Railroad over segregated cars; in 1889, she became part owner and editor of the Memphis Free Speech newspaper. In 1892, catalyzed by the lynching of three black businessmen, she devoted herself to an anti-lynching campaign that would cost her the Memphis newspaper, threaten her life, and sever her ties to Memphis forever. Bay relies heavily on Wellss published writing, especially her posthumous autobiography, Crusade for Justice, supplemented by secondary sources, making this a useful book for students. The perilous edge that Wells traversed, however, is blunted; she led a life full of drama, but Bays quotidian account is an utterly unexciting summary. (Feb.)

Review

“Mia Bay . . . brings dimension to history's minimalist portrait of [Ida B. Wells] in her insightful new biography . . . Bay's book gives credit where it's long overdue.” ―Sandy Nelson, The Santa Fe New Mexican

“In the richly illustrated To Tell the Truth Freely, the historian Mia Bay vividly captures Wells's legacy and life, from her childhood in Mississippi to her early career in late nineteenth-century Memphis and her later life in Progressive-era Chicago.” ―The African American Book Review

“This well-researched book . . . should be useful to both mass communication scholars and a general audience, thanks to Bay's fluid writing style, attention to details, and facts.” ―Jinx Coleman Broussard, Journalism History

“In this remarkable book, Mia Bay understands Ida B. Wells in full--as thinker, writer, crusader, politician, and woman of the world. Finally, we have a biography worthy of one of the bravest and most influential activists in U.S. history.” ―Michael Kazin, author of A Godly Hero: The Life of William Jennings Bryan

“Ida B. Wells is one of America's most important yet relatively unknown historical figures. Absorbing and insightful, To Tell the Truth Freely deftly chronicles the way in which her extraordinary life and career altered the evolution of race and democracy in late nineteenth- and early twentieth century America.” ―Peniel E. Joseph, author of Waiting 'Til the Midnight Hour: A Narrative History of Black Power in America

“Mia Bay's biography of Ida B. Wells is as sharp and sassy as the woman herself. The vigilance and bravado of this dynamic black woman crusader shines through on every page. Bay's triumphant tapestry reveals the life and times of an unsung heroine woven into battles for African American freedom.” ―Catherine Clinton, author of Harriet Tubman: The Road to Freedom

“At last--an eloquent, concise, yet richly detailed account of Ida B. Wells. Beautifully crafted, this book restores Wells to her rightful place in American political history by telling her story with verve and grace.” ―Barbara D. Savage, author of Your Spirits Walk Beside Us: The Politics of Black Religion

“Superb . . . Having been squeezed out of a role in national civil and women's rights organizations, Wells lost a prominent place in the historical record. It took several generations before her relentless and often discomforting agitation for social justice received the appreciation it deserved, as scholars over the last twenty years gradually reestablished her place in history. Mia Bay's lucid biography contributes enormously to this project.” ―Andrew Feffer, History News Network

A Civil Rights Pioneer
By Robin Friedman
Ida B. Wells (1862 - 1931) was one of the first individuals to expose and oppose the lynching that became prevalent in the South and elsewhere in the years following Reconstruction. In the latter part of her life and for many years thereafter, Wells's life and accomplishments were in danger of being overlooked and marginalized. With the publication of her autobiography, "Crusade for Justice" (1971) and of her other writings together with several biographies, Ida Wells has since the 1970s been receiving overdue recognition. Mia Bay's recent biography, "To Tell the Truth Freely: The Life of Ida B. Wells" (2009) offers a solid if dry account of Wells's life and accomplishments. Bay, associate professor of history at Rutgers University, is the associate director of Rutgers's Center for Race and Ethnicity and the author of "The White Image in the Black Mind: African-American Ideas About White People, 1830- 1925".

Wells's parents were slaves when she was born at Holly Springs, Mississippi. With the end of the Civil War, her parents became activists in support of Reconstruction, which became the dominant influence on her life. When Wells was 16, her mother and father and two siblings died in a Yellow Fever epidemic. Wells became a rural schoolteacher to support her remaining younger sisters. She attended college sporadically but was expelled from Rusk College in 1881 for reasons which remain obscure.

As a young woman, Wells moved to Memphis where she taught school and gradually found her way to writing and journalism using the name "Iola". Wells also filed a lawsuit against a railroad for forcing her to sit in a segregated, Jim Crow car. She ultimately lost her case on appeal. The defining moment of Wells's life occurred in 1892 when three male acquaintances in Memphis were lynched. Wells' investigated the lynchings and similar occurrences in the South and wrote about them in her paper. Wells rejected the claim of the apologists for lynching that the practice resulted from the rape of white women by black men. Wells wrote that lynching was instead a power move designed to keep African Americans in fear and servitude. But Southerners found particularly inflammatory Wells's findings that when sexual relationships between black men and white women occurred, these relationships tended to be clandestine, but consensual. She was forced to leave Memphis and lost all her property.

Moving to New York City, Wells became both famous and notorious. She worked with Frederick Douglass in protesting the exclusion of African Americans from participation or recognition in the 1893 Chicago Worlds Fair. She prepared a pamphlet for distribution during the Fair documenting the evils of lynching. She also made two trips to England where she was instrumental in organizing an anti-lynching society among the successors of the British abolitionist movement.

Following the Worlds Fair, Wells remained in Chicago and married a successful attorney, Ferdinand Barnett, with whom she had four children. She remained politically active for the rest of her life, but her fame was eclipsed by Booker T. Washington and then by W.E.B. DuBois. Wells helped found the NAACP, but her abrasive, confrontational and independent personality, together with her gender, denied her a leadership role in this or other national civil rights organizations. But she continued her crusade against lynching and was an activist in protecting the rights of the many African Americans pouring into Chicago as part of the Great Migration.

Bay offers a thorough and a sympathetic portrayal of Wells which draws on the autobiography and on Wells's other writings. Bay is good in showing Wells's relationships to other African American and feminist leaders, including Douglass, Washington, DuBois, and Susan B. Anthony, who counseled Wells against her marriage. Bay also writes with insight about how Wells's activist approach to African American rights was at odds with Booker T. Washington's accomodationist approach and with the subsequent approach of the NAACP which sought to vindicate African American civil rights through litigation and through legislation. Bay emphasizes, as she should, the role of gender in denying Wells a position of leadership within the African American community. But Bay's own text makes clear how tough and difficult Wells could be, even with her allies. Wells's own irascibility and temper seem at least as responsible for her independent status as was her gender.

I learned a great deal about Wells from this book, but I sensed a fire in the woman which Bay does not entirely capture. The book is well-documented and footnoted but lacks a bibliography. On the whole, Bay's book is effective in telling the story of an inspiring American who deserves to be remembered and admired.

Review of TO TELL THE TRUTH FREELY: THE LIFE OF IDA B WELLS, by Mia Bay
By Aundine
This is an astounding, well written book! I am about 4 chapters away from completion; however, I could not WAIT to give my opinion. I hate putting this book down!

As a playwright of historical (specifically black females in history) subjects, I am constantly seeking out great, detailed bios. (Many are often very dry and that's just par for the course with some history.) I own Wells' CRUSADER FOR JUSTICE and THE MEMPHIS DIARY, the first being Ida's bio and the second being a compilation of the diaries she kept while living in Memphis between 1885 and 1893. I'm blown away by how it's possible that this book completely leaves both of those books like dust on a deserted road when it comes to details. I own Paula Gidding's IDA: A SWORD AMONG LIONS. I waited for it in anticipation. It got great reviews. Well, this book tramples it into bits!

This book covers every aspect of Ida's world from her youth in Memphis, to what shaped her into the crusader she became. With Well's bio, she is still quite guarded and protective. I was a little frustrated, because there were details she left out of very valuable parts of her world. Wells was intricate in her description of her journeys to Europe to campaign against lynching; however, she seemed to refuse revealing how she met her husband, how they fell in love. She would comment in-depth regarding her writings and literature when it came to getting the word out on her crusade; however, she refused to give us details concerning outside reaction and commentary from the people around her. We learn that she was exiled from Memphis for her views and specifically the editorial she wrote concerning the lynching of her three friends, however, we aren't made privy to how she felt about leaving her home, which was of course devastating. This book provides those answers and fills in the gaps! Bay doesn't make up explanations. She pieces answers together from letters and surrounding circumstances that Ida was unwilling to reveal.

Reading this book is like shining a light between the lines of all the other books about Ida that tried very much to tell the story of this dynamic and incredible woman so blandly. Bay has a way of revealing each details making this book a page turner.

I had respect for Ida as a woman who attempted to shape a better world, but there were parts of me left cold by her evasive protectiveness. This book shattered that cold. I feel as though I'm getting a chance to really get to not know, but understand her passion. My basic respect has been warmed by true adoration.... because of this book....

If you can't tell, I highly recommend this book! If you love history and love learning the `little things', get this book. I guarantee you will want to send me flowers later for the recommendation!

Long overdue!
By Coreen Borisy
Having grown up in Chicago I was aware of Ida's name, knew she was a freedom fighter, but knew little about her life, background, or achievements. The author has been very t thorough in showing what an intelligent and feisty woman Ida was. She also gives an excellent depiction of the people, times, and political climate which Ida grew up and lived in.

Other leaders of the time are mentioned who fought for the same causes as Ida, however there's far too much repitition. Although I finished the book, 3/4 of the way through it, I'd had enough. The author repeats some of the same phrases, each time saying that Ida fought the "rape" issue. She fought for more than that no matter how she couched her objections to the race inequalities.

I was amazed at Ida's tenacity, energy (even while raising a family) and ability to get up when knocked down and start all over. I certainly understand why she wasn't liked by many people. She truly was like a "dog with a bone". It's just a shame that her life isn't studied by more young black people. Her example is certainly more admirable than some of today's athletes idolized by young boys and girls. Even today, there are countless black men and women who are doctors, lawyers, scientists, and inventors.
More people to know about (and that's whites and blacks) other than Martin L. King.

My book club chose for each member to read any book about ida so when we come together we'll discuss what we found out, etc.. And by the way, I and the other members are all Caucasian.

I love the meditations by this writer! He is well-grounded in the Old Testament (according to the back of my book!) as well as the New Testament. I always read his work with fresh insight into the Holy Scriptures and how they apply to my life today.

Herald's Echoes Long after Passing
By Bob Staib
I ordered this book out of deference to a brief friendship with the author, who has recently passed away. Reading it these past weeks renewed my admiration for the technical depth of Carroll Stuhlmueller, coupled with his exceptional grasp of pastoral priorities. It also enriched this past Easter Season as I read his reflections each day. I was reminded that I have yet to read one of his books or articles without a sense of renewal. The book is excellent for any Christian reader looking for a deeper relationship with Scripture, because it provides exceptional insights into the liturgical season of highest majesty, the Easter Season. These include many of the most important readings of the Christian Scriptures. Father Carroll's writings are sensitive to the entire Christian community, although the book is organized around the Lectionary used by Roman Catholics and several mainline Protestant groups. The author's particular depth with the Hebrew scriptures is evident, although most of the scriptural references are from the New Testament. As a Catholic Deacon, I found his insights helpful in preparing homilies, especially for weekday Masses. There is considerable overlap among the readings around Easter, I expect for greater emphasis. It can be challenging to add a dimension to homilies on similar scriptures compressed into a short time period. His ability to relate the Word to our current life settings gave me several "aha" moments, often the crux of an effective homily. I never heard Father Carroll preach. I knew him through his scholarship and through a unique experience in participating in a video program with him and his Catholic Theological Union associates. Having read this book, I feel I must have missed a powerful homilist. In testimony to my 5 star rating, I have ordered the entire series of Biblical Meditations that he authored for Paulist Press, covering the rest of the liturgical Year. I trust the community I serve will be much richer when I have added his insights to my future homilies.

I had previously read all of Sthulmueller meditations for the special seasons of the Church year. Advent, Lent & Easter.

The box set which consists of all these plus ordinary times I gave to our pastor for Christmas. He was very happy with the books and was looking forward to using them for his homilies.

I ordered the 3 copies of ordinary times and started reading them after the season of Christmas.

The book met all my expectations. It gets you through each day of the week with a second section for Sundays with the 3 cycles.

No Constitutional Right to Be Ladies: Women and the Obligations of Citizenship, by Linda K. Kerber

This pioneering study redefines women's history in the United States by focusing on civic obligations rather than rights. Looking closely at thirty telling cases from the pages of American legal history, Kerber's analysis reaches from the Revolution, when married women did not have the same obligation as their husbands to be "patriots," up to the present, when men and women, regardless of their marital status, still have different obligations to serve in the Armed Forces.

An original and compelling consideration of American law and culture, No Constitutional Right to Be Ladies emphasizes the dangers of excluding women from other civic responsibilities as well, such as loyalty oaths and jury duty. Exploring the lives of the plaintiffs, the strategies of the lawyers, and the decisions of the courts, Kerber offers readers a convincing argument for equal treatment under the law.

In the second half of the 20th century, "rights talk," characteristic of political and legal discourse in the United States, has been forcefully invoked by minorities and women in their respective quests for equal treatment under the law. In No Constitutional Right to Be Ladies, University of Iowa history professor Linda K. Kerber looks at the other side of the rights equation: the issue of obligations. Kerber argues that while men's rights have been bought by their obligations to public service, for women the obligations were to family. Absolution from public service--the constitutional right to be "ladies"--has clear roots in the principle of coverture, by which a woman's legal identity is absorbed by a man's, be it her father, husband, or other protector. This, Kerber writes, is not a boon for women. Women have always had obligations, she notes, it is merely "the forms and objects of demand" that have differed, and disparities between the obligations of men and women have affected women's qualitative ability to exercise rights, such as trial by a jury of one's peers. Kerber presents a series of narratives focusing on particular women whose situations became catalysts for political and legal change and the women, like Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who helped effect those transformations. No Constitutional Right to Be Ladies is engrossing reading for layperson and scholar alike. --Julia Riches

From Publishers Weekly
Abby and Julia Smith, two 19th-century women who challenged their obligation to pay taxes because they were denied the vote, are among the many extraordinary women portrayed in this fascinating history by the author of Women of the Republic and Toward an Intellectual History of Women. In invoking such figures, Kerber illustrates the development of American law defining women's civic obligations from Revolutionary times to the present. Beginning with the distasteful common law doctrine of coverture, Kerber, a history professor at the University of Iowa, describes how the law, past and present, has shielded women from civic obligations otherwise exacted from men. Kerber finds that coverture, which reduced women's civic identities to those of their husbands, "camouflage[d] practices that made them more vulnerable to other forms of public and private power." With this insight, she links women's exemption from civic duties such as jury or military service to the denial of women's civic rights, such as suffrage, a jury of her peers, aid, citizenship, property, even her body. Backing this thoughtful analysis, Kerber presents meticulous research in a nonideological and lively manner. In each of Kerber's discussions of specific civic obligations and rights, she depicts a process of continuous evolution. By combining careful analysis of the law with examples of women challenging the status quo, Kerber offers a unique and powerful history of the continuing struggle for equality.

From Library Journal
This is a groundbreaking legal and intellectual history of Americans' changing understanding of the obligations of women as citizens from Revolutionary times to the present. In five lengthy chapters, Kerber (history, Univ. of Iowa; Toward an Intellectual History of Women, LJ 4/15/97) examines the obligations of loyalty, avoidance of vagrancy, payment of taxes, jury duty, and military service. She demonstrates that women have experienced these obligations differently from men, owing in part to the English heritage of coverture in which a married woman's legal identity was subsumed by that of her husband and in which obligation to the husband overrode obligations to the state. As women's rights to property, suffrage, and control of their bodies were established, the question of their civic duties was raised and the nature of these duties redefined. Not a straightforward narrative of progress, this is instead a complex set of stories of court cases and legal decisions that circle back on one another even as questions of women's privileges and exclusion persist. I had trouble putting it down.
By bookworm
This is an absolutely fascinating book. The material in it is interesting, detailed and very well written. She uses legal cases as a starting point to discuss women's civic obligations. It becomes very clear that people's obligations have an enormous effect on their rights and the roles they are expected to play in society. The individual cases help keep things grounded in people's lives and not just legal theories. There is an amazing amount of information that I never knew which really helped me understand how things were and how they changed.
One case study was two women who felt that they were being charged more in property taxes that the other land owners in the area. They decided to stop paying property taxes using the slogan "no taxation without representation". These two women had received training in political activism with the abolition and temperence movements which was common among the people who worked for women's sufferage. The "no taxation without representation" was one of the first legal arguments used to try and obtain voting rights for women and initially it was a strong one. It had certainly worked to increase the various classes of men that were allowed to vote. With women, unfortunately, the courts chipped away at the legel precident rather than following it. This one case allowed Ms. Kerber to talk about how women were hurt by being kept out of the political system, the women's sufferage movement, and the response of the courts and politicians.
This book gave me an immense amount of food for thought. I highly recommend it.

Absolutely fascinating stories.

This is that rare history book that can keep one up late, utterly unable to wait til the next day for the end of the story. Kerber focuses on little-known women and their conflicts with government over their rights and obligations as citizens: loyalty during wartime, voting, serving on juries, paying taxes. She brings these stories to life with dramatic, clear writing. If you're interested in American history, don't miss this book

Another great book from Kerber -
By A Customer
I have read a lot of women's and Constitutional history, and still my jaw literally dropped open several times while reading this book. Her use of real scenarios made the book readable and enjoyable. People have said lately that we are focused too much on our rights and not our responsibilities; it's scary to see that whether women must bear the responsibilities of citizenship is still in many ways an open question.

As China Goes, So Goes the World: How Chinese Consumers Are Transforming Everything, by Karl Gerth

In this revelatory examination of the most overlooked force that is changing the face of China, the Oxford historian and scholar of modern Asia Karl Gerth shows that as the Chinese consumer goes, so goes the world. While Americans and Europeans have become increasingly worried about China's competition for manufacturing jobs and energy resources, they have overlooked an even bigger story: China's rapid development of an American-style consumer culture, which is revolutionizing the lives of hundreds of millions of Chinese and has the potential to reshape the world.

This change is already well under way. China has become the world's largest consumer of everything from automobiles to beer and has begun to adopt such consumer habits as living in large single-occupancy homes, shopping in gigantic malls, and eating meat-based diets served in fast-food outlets. Even rural Chinese, long the laggards of consumerism, have been buying refrigerators, televisions, mobile phones, and larger houses in unprecedented numbers. As China Goes, So Goes the World reveals why we should all care about the everyday choices made by ordinary Chinese. Taken together, these seemingly small changes are deeper and more profound than the headline-grabbing stories on military budgets, carbon emissions, or trade disputes.

From Publishers Weekly
Although China remains nominally socialist, consumerism has become deeply entrenched, the ramifications of which will be considerable--and global--according to Gerth (China Made), Oxford University professor of modern Chinese history. He paints a vivid picture--and historical context--for the waning of frugality and the traditionally high rates of saving and the rise of pop culture, luxury-brand consumption and car culture, a burgeoning advertising industry, the ubiquity of Chinese counterfeits, and--more sordidly--the development of the largest commercial sex work force in the world, the theft of baby girls for adoption export, and the sale of essential organs. Gerth makes an arresting argument that Chinese consumption may be the panacea for the scrabbling economies of the West; Chinese demand for American and European high-tech goods, financial services, and other products might create jobs and economic growth and, in turn, lead to a stable, increasingly capitalistic, and eventually democratic China. Required reading for those interested in shifting global power dynamics and current consumption patterns. (Nov.) (c)

From Booklist
The austere China Gerth experienced as a 1980s student contrasts with the economically charging country he teaches today as a professor in Britain. Interested in consumerism, Gerth delves into the effects individuals’ purchasing preferences are producing on China; the domestic and international political impact of Chinese growth is not addressed—for that, see The Beijing Consensus, by Stefan Halper (2010). To initiate his observations, Gerth typically seizes on something that didn’t exist in his student days: for example, beauty salons, private automobiles, or disposable chopsticks. Businesses and entire industries that have arisen to meet consumers’ desire for such products and services generate Gerth’s discourse, which he researched from Chinese media and discussion with his contacts. Mao’s China recedes to distant memory in the resulting depiction of capitalistic construction, ubiquitous advertising, and status-conscious shopping. Certain consequences of Chinese consumerism do not escape Gerth’s acuity: he spots social resentments, piracy of intellectual property, pollution, and “extreme markets” (trade in sex, human organs, and adoptions) as problems. Describing the present, Gerth will sensitize business or tourist travelers to Chinese markets. --Gilbert Taylor

Review

“Due to the very nature of China--huge, complicated, full of historical nuance-- picking up a book that attempts to explain even a fragment of it can be downright daunting, even to the China enthusiast. But in this shrinking world, China is a country worth understanding and Gerth provides a wealth of information in a digestible, provocative format . . . As China Goes, So Goes the World is an important read.” ―Jenna Fisher, The Christian Science Monitor

“As China Goes, So Goes the World offers a vivid portrait of contemporary China.” ―Richard McGregor, The Nation

“A worthy introduction to key facets of Chinese consumer culture. It should prove beneficial to readers from executives looking to break into the China market to sociologists keen to understand how consumerism is changing China.” ―Andrew Peaple, The Wall Street Journal Asia

“As China Goes, So Goes the World is an exhilarating read, deeply researched and thoroughly entertaining.” ―Christina Larson, Washington Monthly

“Nuanced, balanced and accessible--essential reading for anyone trying to make sense of China today.” ―Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

“A groundbreaking--and hair-raising--account of what it means for life on the planet as China reshapes itself as a consumer society.” ―Isabel Hilton, Editor, chinadialogue

“The global economy of the last several decades has been underpinned by two simple principles: the frugal Chinese make everything, and the spendthrift Americans will buy anything. But what happens when Chinese consumers begin to lead the world and to define global tastes? We're not there yet, but Karl Gerth's new book guides us through China's consumer revolution to a future modeled in part on America--a future of cars and conspicuous consumption; of the selling of land, labor, and sex; of growing inequality and interlocking elites of business and politics; of wanton environmental degradation. This engaging and provocative book captures with skill and wit the changes that define Chinese markets today and that may, in time, transform the world. Read it before your next trip to China.” ―William Kirby, Spangler Family Professor of Business Administration, Harvard Business School

“A highly entertaining and incisive description and analysis of the rise of China's consumerism, and the enormous forces it is driving around the world today.” ―Graham Earnshaw, author of The Life and Death of a Dotcom in China

“China not only makes most of the world's stuff but increasingly its billion citizens are consuming it with Western-style appetites for everything from bottled water to BMWs. As China Goes, So Goes the World holds lessons for everyone concerned about managing the increasing footprint of human consumption on our fragile planet.” ―Thomas F. Thornton, Director, MSc Environmental Change & Management & Senior Research Fellow, University of Oxford

“An entertaining read with real--but often alarming--substance packed quietly in every line.” ―Mark Elvin, author, The Retreat of the Elephants: An Environmental History of China

“Many books have appeared about China's social, economic and political systems but little is reported about the everyday lives of hundreds of millions of Chinese consumers. Karl Gerth provides valuable information and insights about consumer choices in China and their implications for Chinese and Western businesses operating in China.” ―Philip Kotler, S.C. Johnson Distinguished Professor of International Marketing, Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University

An excellent book full of useful, well-researched information.
By rlweaverii
Book review by Richard L. Weaver II, Ph.D.

The author teaches modern Chinese history at Oxford University and has written one previous book on China. The 205-pages of text of the book As China Goes . . . is followed by 29 pages of notes, three pages of further readings, and a complete index. The notes section is thorough, comprehensive, and extremely competent.

The book is not only well-written, it is well-researched, too.

Having recently visited both Shanghai and Beijing, I was interested in the author's perspective of China, and that is why I sought out this book.

His eight chapter titles reveal, in part, what this book is about: 1) No Going Back? 2) Who Gets What? 3) Made in Taiwan. 4) Standardizing Abundance. 5) Branding Consumer Consciousness. 6) Living in a World of Fakes. 7) Extreme Markets. 8) Environmental Implications.

I thought the continuing contrast between the past and the present throughout the book was interesting and stark. Having been there recently, I was able to witness the characteristics Gerth offered about present-day China. Having lived and worked in Dacca, East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) for nine months, it is not difficult to visualize the China Gerth knew when he went to school there, and the China with which he contrasted the present.

This is a well-written, well-researched, well-organized, and well-presented narrative that offers an accurate picture of China both then and now. Gerth's examples--whether personal, from contacts, or from his research--are interesting, useful, and certainly help advance his narrative.

I found this information both accurate and informative: "If global consumers are concerned about the safety of such Chinese imports as toys, paint, and drywall, imagine what it's like to be a consumer in China, where the authenticity and quality of everything in your life is suspect: the food you eat, the water you drink, the pills you put in your body, the building you live in, the computer you use, the airplane you fly in--right down to the `Mont Blanc' pen you may use, say, to write a book manuscript. The uncertainty created by Chinese counterfeits is making sonsumer life in China unpredictable . . ." (P. 155).

This quotation reveals Gerth's writing style, the accuracy of his observations, and the kind of information he has for readers. This is a wonderful book, full of excellent, insightful information. Whether you are planning a China trip, have been to China in the past, or if you have an interest in the development of the Chinese economy. It isn't just the development of the Chinese economy either, it is the reciprocal influence between China and the United States. In his conclusion's final paragraph, Gerth says, ". . . what happens in China is also deeply influenced by the actions of other countries, particularly the United States, and a similar case could be made that as the American consumer goes, so goes the Chinese consumer and the world. . . .(p. 205)."

This is an excellent book full of 205 pages of useful, well-researched information.

Fresh Hot Bear Bile here

An important subject for the vast number of Human lives that will be and/or have been directly or indirectly altered by China's Mega-Economic Tsunami. The Author does an admirable job of touching on different parts of this modern day phenomenon but in the end just scratches the surface. This book needed additional depth and refinement, and at a little more than 200 pages those qualities certainly aren't easy to find. Furthermore, the middle chapters are repetitive even gobbledygook-ish (WTO this, WTO that and so on). While this book is not perfect if your interested in enlightening yourself a little, reading this book can only help. Who needs adequate oxygen, potable water, and fertile soil anyway, next on the list India; with all the babies you can birth. Read Instead: Life and Death in Shanghai.

GAAP Guide Level A (2009) (GAAP Guide Level A: Restatement & Analysis of Current FASB Standards), by Jan R. Williams, Joseph V. Carcello

GAAP Guide Level A analyzes authoritative GAAP literature contained in Level A of the GAAP hierarchy, established by Statement on Auditing Standards No. 69, including FASB Statements and Interpretations, as well as APB Opinions and Accounting Research Bulletins. In clear language, each pronouncement is discussed in a comprehensive format that makes it easy to understand and apply. Practical illustrations and examples demonstrate and clarify specific accounting principles. The 2009 edition covers up to FAS-163 and contains the following specific information: Changes in the GAAP hierarchy promulgated in FAS-162 (The Hierarchy of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles). Changes required by FAS-141(R) (Business Combinations). Reporting requirements for noncontrolling interests required by FAS-160 (Noncontrolling Interests in Consolidated Financial Statements). Amendments to FAS-133 found in FAS-161 (Disclosures about Derivative Instruments and Hedging Activities). Recently issued FAS-163 (Accounting for Financial Guarantee Insurance Contracts). In addition, accounting pronouncements are organized alphabetically by topic under two general areas: generally accepted accounting principles and specialized industry accounting principles. Pronouncements covering the same subject are incorporated into a single chapter, so that the authoritative information is easily accessible. The Practice Pointers throughout point out, in plain English, how to apply the standards just discussed. Observations enrich the discussion by presenting interesting aspects of GAAP, such as conflicts within the authoritative literature. To facilitate research, GAAP Guide Level A includes references to pertinent paragraphs of the original pronouncements. Where applicable, topics related to international standards are cross-referenced to CCH's International Accounting/Financial Reporting Standards Guide. Material can be located several ways: the Cross-Reference shows the chapter in which a particular pronouncement is discussed and where to find its counterpart in the proposed FASB codification; the Index provides a quick page reference; and the chapters' tables of contents list all topics covered and the page on which they begin.
