Julian of Norwich: Showings (The Classics of Western Spirituality Series), by James Walsh

Julian, an anchoress who lived in solitude in Norwich, England in the late 14th century, received the 16 "showings" or revelations of God's love in a series of experienced visions. The first version was a short text. The second, longer version was apparently written some years after the first, when she had had time to pray and reflect about the teachings God had given her.

In the light of their thirteen years of work on the critical edition of Showings, Colledge and Walsh give us this first modern English rendering from the place of Julian's teaching in Catholic Spirituality. The editors present Julian as a skilled theologian and master of rhetorical style. Jean Leclercz, the noted monk, writer, and medievalist, in his preface addresses himself to the question, "Why is this an important work today?"

Showings reveals a Julian who experienced God directly and not self-consciously as "our mother." Her revelations of the feminine side of God represent a significant contribution to the tradition. Her graphic visions of the humanity of Christ are marked by vivid imagery and detail. But the special appeal of Julian lies in her theology of the all- embracing fullness of divine love. Julian is certainly a warm and approachable companion for the mystical journey.

Amazon.com Review
In a time when Christian women mystics are at last being discovered, Julian of Norwich still stands out as one of the most essential--and one of the most approachable. An anchoress who lived in solitude in Norwich, England, in the late 14th century, Julian's book consists of the 16 "showings" or revelations from God. Most famous is her vision of the universe as she gazes into the smallness of a hazelnut, but the book is rich throughout with beauty. Her style is simple and homely in its images, not unlike the later St. Teresa of Avila. "God almighty is our loving Father," she writes, "and God all wisdom is our loving Mother." She affirms, "our substance is in God, and ... God is in our sensuality." For Julian God is the foundation of all that is, and the foundation of God is love. As she concludes, "What, do you wish to know your Lord's meaning in this thing? Know it well, love was his meaning. Who reveals it to you? Love. What did he reveal to you? Love. Why does he reveal it to you? For love."

The editors, Edmund Colledge, O.S.A., and James Walsh, S.J., worked for 13 years on this beautiful edition. Including a detailed analysis of the text in the introduction, the book also contains an insightful preface from Jean Leclercq, who explores the relevance of Julian's work for today. All of this, however, is in service to these astonishing visions, given to a woman whose single desire was to surrender all to God. --Doug Thorpe

When You Were a Tadpole and I Was a Fish: And Other Speculations About This and That, by Martin Gardner

Best known as the longtime writer of the Mathematical Games column for Scientific American—which introduced generations of readers to the joys of recreational mathematics—Martin Gardner has for decades pursued a parallel career as a devastatingly effective debunker of what he once famously dubbed “fads and fallacies in the name of science.” It is mainly in this latter role that he is onstage in this collection of choice essays. When You Were a Tadpole and I Was a Fish takes aim at a gallery of amusing targets, ranging from Ann Coulter’s qualifications as an evolutionary biologist to the logical fallacies of precognition and extrasensory perception, from Santa Claus to The Wizard of Oz, from mutilated chessboards to the little-known “one-poem poet” Langdon Smith (the original author of this volume’s title line). The writings assembled here fall naturally into seven broad categories: Science, Bogus Science, Mathematics, Logic, Literature, Religion and Philosophy, and Politics. Under each heading, Gardner displays an awesome level of erudition combined with a wicked sense of humor.

From Publishers Weekly
With more than 70 books to his credit, Gardner remains thoroughly enjoyable to read. This latest is a collection of 24 articles, book reviews and other pieces on subjects like science, bogus science, mathematics, logic, literature, religion and politics. The range demonstrates that Gardner should be well-known for more than his remarkable Mathematical Games column published for 25 years in Scientific American. Gardner is a debunker who begs folks to think critically and carefully, usually doing so himself with wit and wisdom. He takes on Ann Coulter for her pronouncements on intelligent design and those who claim the sinking of the Titanic was foretold by numerous people. He is most personal in the book's longest piece, Why I Am Not an Atheist, in which he explores the nature of belief. His essays on The Wizard of Oz, Santa Claus and the book's eponymous poem on evolution by Langdon Smith are of a different genre than the rest, but no less interesting. Least compelling in such a general collection are the somewhat pedantic mathematical explorations. The collection represents Gardner at his best. (Oct. 21)

Review
“Smart, witty essays on science and culture.” —Carolyn Kellogg, Los Angeles Times “Martin Gardner is indispensable. Here’s the perfect introduction to the range of his obsessions—from Ann Coulter to the Wizard of Oz. With Gardner, the exercise of reason and taste is always a virtuoso performance.” —William Poundstone, bestselling author of 12 books, including the forthcoming Priceless: The Myth of Fair Value (and How to Take Advantage of It) “Martin Gardner keeps knocking my socks off. After all these years, I thought I knew his work inside and out, but this latest collection is full of surprises. Alongside some Gardner classics (a celebration of the Fibonacci numbers, a debunking of parapsychology) we are treated to essays on Santa Claus, the sinking of the Titanic, and a ‘one-poem poet’ who turned the evolution of life on earth into a love story.” —Brain Hayes, author of Group Theory in the Bedroom, and Other Mathematical Diversions “Another provocative set of debunking essays from Mr. Gardner. Golden oldies, platinum perennials, contemporary cuties—however characterized, the pieces reveal once again the limpidity of his thought and the engagingness of his prose. Good stuff!” —John Allen Paulos, author of Innumeracy and Irreligion “From Ann Coulter to the Anthropic Principle, Martin Gardner is a magician’s magician, opening our minds to the crazy world around us. These essays are fun to read, and have deep roots and pointers to follow if you want to know more.” —Persi Diaconis, Stanford University

A little too random...
By mparker
I knew getting this book would be a gamble, and though it wasn't a complete loss, I wouldn't have purchased it again if given a second chance. Gardner does have some useful insights here and there but for the most part I was disappointed. The different sections are just cobbled together and reads like a random collection of newspaper clippings. And there were times were he used a string of very weak arguments to support his views (even those views I agreed with). For example in one such article he criticizes another author for quoting a catholic regarding a particular subject, after which Gardner points out the author is a protestant, and proceeds to penalize the protestant author for quoting a catholic in support of their position, afterwards rhetorically asking whether the author was protestant or catholic? Which is pretty silly. Ultimately it just felt like a lot of intellectual ramblings laced with sophomoric digs on others whose views he disagreed with, with a handful of pearls of wisdom here and there. I appreciate those pearls of wisdom, they just weren't of enough quality and quantity to make up for the rest.

Food for Thought
By J. Hull
I enjoyed this book. as I enjoy most books that make me sit up and think. I recall it being his last collection of essays, so it had some of those last minute topics and wasn't always the same light-hearted tone he was known for, but it is a worthwhile book and one you can pass around to your friends and family. (I hope you have better luck getting loaned books back than I do though!) I just wish our leaders like thought-provoking literature like this. (Or reading at all, for that matter.)

If you haven't read Gardner before, you might want to look a little earlier in his list to start - find something you like already and prepare to like it a lot more after adding Gardner into it. For instance, if you like the Alice books, be prepared to enjoy them a LOT more if you read Gardner's Annotated Alice. (Fair warning: If you DON'T like puzzles or mathematical diversions or scientific commentary, you may want to look somewhere else.)

Gardner the Great
By Rob Hardy
I was lucky to get to know Martin Gardner's writings when I was a kid. For me, Gardner will always be the guy who wrote the celebrated and long-running (25 years) monthly column "Mathematical Games", found in the back pages of _Scientific American_. It is true that Gardner didn't always confine himself strictly to mere mathematics; his column was the first introduction I got to the pictures of M. C. Escher, for instance. And the columns were not necessarily games, although games like Reversi were often featured. The wide-ranging subjects were not just an introduction to mathematics, broadly defined, but to the oddities and the beauties that mathematics might reveal. They also showed the enormous instructive power of puzzles. The columns are now collected in lots of books, and they will never go out of date. Gardner also annotated the Alice books by Lewis Carroll, and went on to annotate "Casey at the Bat" and "The Night Before Christmas". He wrote in different forums about science, hoaxes, literature, skepticism, magic, and religion. He has published over seventy books, and I learn in his latest, _When You Were a Tadpole and I Was a Fish: And Other Speculations about This and That_ (Hill and Wang), that he is 94 years old, and resides in an assisted living home. And still writing! Thank goodness, he is still writing! His current book is a miscellany, reprints of pieces published in many arenas. "The only thing these scribblings have in common," he writes, "is that I wrote them all." That's good enough for me!

The essays herein cover a lot of territory. There is politics, like a chapter on Ann Coulter. "I never took Ann seriously until I read her fifth book, _Godless: The Church of Liberalism_." Coulter promotes Intelligent Design, which is religious creationism in as best a new scientific guise as it can muster. Coulter says that Christianity fuels everything she writes, so Gardner wants to know what sort of Christian she is, so she could inform us of the background for her insults against scientists. There is a review here of Frank Tipler's book _The Physics of Christianity_, and it is scathing about Tipler's belief that miracles are not supernatural events violating laws of science, but highly improbable natural events performed deliberately by God without such violations. Gardner reports sadly that this absurd book is not a hoax. Gardner is not an atheist; one of his chapters has a title borrowed from a similar one from Bertrand Russell, "Why I Am Not an Atheist". He believes in God, but is content to confess "... that I have no basis whatever for my belief in God other than a passionate longing that God exists and that I and others will not cease to exist." He also confesses that this is a leap of faith that he understands "as little as I understand the essence of a photon." There are a couple of "Mathematical Games" style chapters, one about the Fibonacci sequence (always fertile ground for recreational math) and one on tiling chessboards with L-shaped tiles. The title of his book comes from the 1895 poem "Evolution", the only poem ever published by Langdon Smith, about whom Gardner knows more than anyone in the world, and knows next to nothing because no one besides him has taken much interest in Smith. "Evolution" is a sweet, comic, romantic poem of 108 lines. It starts:

When you were a tadpole and I was a fish,
In the Paleozoic time,
And side by side on the ebbing tide
We sprawled through the ooze and slime,
Or skittered with many a caudal flip
Through the depths of the Cambrian fen,
My heart was rife with the joy of life,
For I loved you even then.

And by the time of the last verse, the couple are sitting at Delmonico's and toasting their evolution from amphibians to mammals and to hominids, quite a performance. In the chapter "Why I Am Not a Paranormalist", Gardner excoriates the astrological beliefs of President and Mrs. Reagan and the support of the teaching of creationism by President George W. Bush. A chapter on Isaac Newton reminds us that as great as his writings were on physics and mathematics, he wrote a lot more about alchemy and about his strange religious beliefs, including his opposition to the Christian doctrine of the Trinity. "What else might he have discovered," wonders Gardner, "had he not squandered his energy and talents on alchemy and Biblical exegesis!" If you are already a Gardner fan, you don't need to be told to get this book; if you are not yet, here is a perfect introduction to the broad interests and sharp, entertaining writing of a great American original.

GAAP Guide Level A Combo (2009) (Book and CD) (GAAP Guide Level A: Restatement & Analysis (W/CD)), by Jan R. Williams, Joseph V. Carcello

The GAAP Guide Level A, in both the text and on the accompanying easy-to-use CD-ROM, analyzes authoritative GAAP literature contained in Level A of the GAAP hierarchy, established by Statement on Auditing Standards No. 69, which include FASB Statements and Interpretations, as well as APB Opinions and Accounting Research Bulletins. It is written in clear, comprehensible language. Each pronouncement is discussed in a comprehensive format that makes it easy to understand and apply. Practical illustrations and examples demonstrate and clarify specific accounting principles. The 2009 edition covers up to FAS-163 and contains the following specific information: · Changes in the GAAP hierarchy promulgated in FAS-162 (The Hierarchy of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles). · Changes required by FAS-141(R) (Business Combinations). · Reporting requirements for noncontrolling interests required by FAS-160 (Noncontrolling Interests in Consolidated Financial Statements). · Amendments to FAS-133 found in FAS-161 (Disclosures about Derivative Instruments and Hedging Activities). · Recently issued FAS-163 (Accounting for Financial Guarantee Insurance Contracts). Accounting pronouncements are organized alphabetically by topic under two general areas: generally accepted accounting principles and specialized industry accounting principles. Pronouncements covering the same subject are incorporated into a single chapter, so that the authoritative information is easily accessible. The Practice Pointers explicate, in plain English, how to apply the standards just discussed. Observations enrich the discussion by presenting interesting aspects of GAAP, such as conflicts within the authoritative literature. To facilitate research, the GAAP Guide Level A includes extensive references to pertinent paragraphs of the original pronouncements. Where applicable, topics related to international standards are cross-referenced to CCH's International Accounting/Financial Reporting Standards Guide. Material can be located several ways: the Cross-Reference shows the chapter in which a particular pronouncement is discussed and where to find its useful counterpart in the proposed FASB codification; the Index provides a quick page reference; and the chapters' table of contents list all topics covered and the page on which they begin. The GAAP Guide Level A meets accounting industry standards overseen by the peer review system and contains a document covering the peer review of this book.

Mining California: An Ecological History, by Andrew C. Isenberg

An environmental History of California during the Gold Rush

Between 1849 and 1874 almost $1 billion in gold was mined in California. With little available capital or labor, here's how: high-pressure water cannons washed hillsides into sluices that used mercury to trap gold but let the soil wash away; eventually more than three times the amount of earth moved to make way for the Panama Canal entered California's rivers, leaving behind twenty tons of mercury every mile―rivers overflowed their banks and valleys were flooded, the land poisoned. In the rush to wealth, the same chain of foreseeable consequences reduced California's forests and grasslands.

Not since William Cronon's Nature's Metropolis has a historian so skillfully applied John Muir's insight―"When we try to pick out anything by itself, we find it hitched to everything else in the universe"―to the telling of the history of the American West. Beautifully told, this is western environmental history at its finest.

From Publishers Weekly
Isenberg's densely written text provides an overview of the industrialization of mining, logging, ranching and agriculture in California between 1850 and 1900 that, while well researched and exceedingly informative, assumes a greater familiarity with North American and California history than most readers are likely to have. However, Isenberg provides a perspective almost entirely missing from other history texts, showing how our forebears' environmental decisions continue to affect our lives. He examines how technologies developed to mine the gold deposits of the Sierra Nevada, to log the redwoods of the Northwest coast and to develop the Central Valley into a productive agricultural region caused profound environmental changes that altered the course of industrialization and politics. Of particular interest is the role that hydraulic mining played in starting the "water wars" that have pervaded Western politics for the past 150 years. He makes a strong case that California, rapidly industrialized before any other Western state, set the model for industrial development in the American West. Most interestingly, he compares the sequestration of Native Americans in reservations and the rise of industrial-scale agriculture to the enclosure of British commons in preceding centuries. The extensive bibliography is rich in primary source material, and the text is thoroughly footnoted. This is not a book for the general reader; rather, it is best suited for an upper-division or graduate-level seminar course.

Review

“Superbly written. This excellent read, a model for future studies, deserves highest recommendations.” ―D. Steeples, Choice; An Outstanding Academic Title

“As entertaining as it is insightful, Isenberg's book does justice to the dramatic ecological transformations California underwent in the half century after the Gold Rush. This is environmental history at its best.” ―J. R. McNeill, author of Something New Under the Sun: An Environmental History of the Twentieth-Century World

“Andrew Isenberg's superb new book analyzes the ecological domino effect set in motion by the California Gold Rush, which touched off the cycles of environmental degradation the scale of which we can only now fully appreciate. Filled with lessons and warnings, Mining California is a timely and important book.” ―William Deverell, Director, Huntington-USC Institute on California and the West

“The book offers a mother lode of descriptions of the sheer scale of projects undertaken, and a keen portrait of the ecological domino effect of new industries…. At a time when the state's residency has been forecast to grow by 13 million in the next 25 years, with its population probably stretching into its farthest regions, Mining California offers sobering reading on the consequences of unchecked expansion.” ―San Francisco Chronicle

From Publishers Weekly
Farber ( Chicago '68 ) writes that "with President Kennedy's death, Americans confronted a grim reality: not all of America's possibilities were good." Following the country's unprecedented prosperity and world influence after WW II, the '60s were marked by emerging violence and discontent--the Watts riots, brutal political killings--the fearsome responses to shattered hopes. Farber sketches an arresting picture of a national midlife crisis recorded and disseminated in part by an infectious TV culture that, for the first time, provided the majority of Americans with their news, and hit an unlikely nerve with the ever popular story of a poor family making good-- The Beverly Hillbillies . Beatniks, Beatles, Timothy Leary and marijuana busts shared prime time with Vietnam, Mario Salvio's Free Speech movement, Black Power and the landmark Civil Rights Act (Lyndon Johnson reportedly said to segregationist Sen. Richard Russell, "get out of my way. I'm going to run over you"). The great dreams of the '60s, like Johnson's Great Society, collided with the explosive realities. With deft overview, Farber explores the many intertwined movements, including Kennedy's strident anti-communist election campaign that later contributed to his committing combat troops in Vietnam. Although the complex arts and letters get short shrift in favor of pop culture, and a sense of pastiche is inevitable, readers who lived through the '60s--or wish they did--will relish this work.

From Library Journal
In this reasoned and readable survey of the momentous social and political events of the 1960s, historian Farber sympathetically looks at this period without rose-colored glasses, critically analyzing it without assigning blame. He treats the decade as a critical period of change--of creativity and chaos--that grew out of an increasingly consumer-oriented post-World War II, society reaching out to absorb all Americans. The civil rights revolution, the Vietnam War, the urban riots, the rise of rock music, the decade's rise and fall of the Great Society, and the assassinations are all woven together masterfully in a historical narrative that successfully communicates the era's zeitgeist. Especially interesting is Farber's final chapter explaning how the 1970s and the beginning of the Reagan era evolved from the burned-out fragments of the 1960s. A synthesis of late 20th-century American political and social history against which future books on the decade will be measured.

From Booklist
Farber's impressive overview of the U.S. in the 1960s represents a significant contribution to the scholarly analysis of an ever-intriguing decade. The author places the 1960s in proper historical context, defining that turbulent era as the logical extension and culmination of an earlier epoch that encompassed the Great Depression, World War II, and the postwar prosperity boom. As the U.S. attempted to adjust to an increasingly international role as a global superpower, the evolution of an extremely complex, consumer-oriented economy, and the emergence of a much stronger, more centralized federal government, an explosive political and cultural reaction proved to be all but inevitable. The domestic tensions and contradictions that were the natural by-product of that struggle generated a wave of social unrest that produced both the triumph and the tragedy of this paradoxical juncture in history. An insightful social chronicle. Margaret Flanagan

RATIONAL PERSPECTIVES ON A TURBULENT ERA
By Eric H. Roth
How can college students today understand the passions, complexities, and puzzles of the 1960s? This lucid and accessible survey illuminates the connections between the emerging consumer culture, social movements, and political tensions from 1960-1974. Written by a Barnard College historian for undergraduate students, this multi-dimensional shows the often conflicting factors and personalities behind critical events from Kennedy's election and the Cuban Missile Crisis to sit-in demonstrations and assassinations (JFK, Martin Luther King, RFK) and the escalating Vietnam War. Avoiding the glib and superficial conclusions that mar too many books on the 60s', this informative synthesis combines insider memoirs, oral histories, popular TV shows and census data in an engaging account. An excellent selection for American Studies, Cultural Studies, and modern American History courses.

Overview of the 1960's
By Jeffrey Leach
The age of great dreams turned into the age of great nightmares, which America has still not awakened from. David Farber shows us where it all began in his history of the 1960's. The back cover says Farber teaches history at the University of New Mexico and is also the author of some other books on the 1960's, specifically "Chicago '68." I have not read any of his other books, but this one is well written and provides a good overview of the turbulent age of rebellion.
Farber starts his book with a quick overview of the 1950's, essential for studying the 1960's. Farber shows how economic, social and political conditions laid the groundwork for the 1960's. Some of the conditions of the 1950's fairly well known: the baby boom and suburban growth were the fuel for the fire in the 1960's. Farber also writes about the conditions of blacks in the 1950's, as well as the growing omnipresence of television and advertising. Farber titled this chapter, "Good Times," but many problems lay under the surface, ready to explode at the slightest spark.
The rest of the book deals with almost every aspect of the 1960's. From Kennedy to Nixon, Farber misses few opportunities to bring to light both the good and the bad. He covers everything from LSD to the Bay of Pigs, from SDS to the sit-ins. His major theme is how the 1960's started out with Kennedy's vision of a "New Frontier," where anything seemed possible for an America rich in resources. By the end of the book, Farber shows the dawning realization that it can't all be done, that possibilities are not limitless. It took a mess of assassinations, a spoiled generation of brats, a huge war, and the Great Society programs of LBJ to show America that there were limits on what the country could do.
This is a good book that will certainly introduce anyone who reads it to the major themes of the 1960's. Focusing on the 1960's is important because it helps us forget about the 1970's, with pet rocks and the clothes my Mom made me wear predominating the memories of that decade. This was the main book for the class I took on the 1960's, and it was a good choice.

Fine book, but not a good text for lower-division courses
By Daniel
What is done well: Farber brings analysis to the events and issues that drive the '60s, arguing for example that the affluence of the 1950s, together with the exploding marketplace of products, led to a new marketplace of ideas and a willingness for the new youth culture to try new things and toy with new ideas. Farber covers most of the key players and issues well, from the civil rights movement to Vietnam. He also rightly dips in the 1970s to finish the long decade, covering Watergate briefly.

What is not done well: He omits or is too brief on certain topics that should be covered in this book: Rosa Parks, My Lai, Woodstock, and the new music culture of the '60s youth. Compare this book to Terry Anderson's shorter and more lively book The Sixties, and you'll find the latter book is a better introductory textbook.

Researching GAAP is time consuming because of the multiple sources for pronouncements. This CD reduces the time it takes to find current accounting methods for common financial events. Instead of GAAP guides cluttering your office, CDs are space friendly.
