Gentle Explanation

This book is a thorough and gentle explanation of the how the process of forgiveness works, and how completeness in our own lives (we who have been hurt and need to forgive the person(s) who hurt us) can be attained through the five stages of forgiveness. It is also a gentle and compassionate explanation of how hurts affect the various aspects of our lives. Linn's format is easy to read and to understand. A must for anyone's bookshelf.

Forgiveness
By tammy jetton
This book helps one to understand the stages they must go through in order to forgive someone who has wronged them along with helping them understand that God did not put them through this to hurt them. Instead it should make them a stronger person once they forgive the one who has wronged them along with growing closer to God.

Gets to the root of the issues
By J. Williard
This book, based on Kuebler Ross five stages of death & dying, is a wonderful way to work through life's hurts, giving us permission to take our anger, pain, bargaining, to God in prayer & allow Him to show us how to stop letting the past continue to hurt us in the present. The section on the unconditional love of Christ is healing in its presentation. I have used it over & over & have loaned this book out to my friends in need.

Looking Good: Male Body Image in Modern America, by Lynne Luciano

A valuable examination of the tyranny of body image--this time over men

Not so long ago, what the average American man did mattered more than how he looked. Since the 1970s, however, projecting the right look has become more and more essential, and men are spending millions of dollars on fitness training, bodybuilding, hair replacement, and cosmetic surgery in the relentless pursuit of physical perfection.

What has caused American men to fall into the beauty trap so long assumed to be a special danger for women? This book looks at the confluence of social, economic, and cultural changes that have shaped the new cult of male body image in postwar America. Lynne Luciano explores what men are doing to themselves, asks why they are doing it, and discovers what this new world tells us about American society today.

Clothes, they used to say, make the man. Now sartorial grace is bolstered by a world of male cosmetics, diet products, hair products, hair-replacements and plastic surgeries. So much for uncontrived manliness. In this breezy, informative book (based upon the author's doctoral dissertation), Luciano traces the complicated and often surprising history of constructed masculinity. While the book focuses primarily on consumer patterns surrounding products that enhance masculinity (for example, in 1996 the bill for male plastic surgery reached $500 million, while in 1997 American men spent $3 billion on grooming aids and fragrances), Luciano deftly weaves these concerns into a larger historical narrative. She peppers her work with fascinating tidbits, from the fact that Julius Caesar crowned himself with laurels to hide his encroaching baldness to Pope Pius's XII's 1958 condemnation of plastic surgery because it "enhanc[es] the power of seduction, thus leading others more easily into sin." Luciano is at her smartest when looking at consumer products, like the electric reducing fads of the 1950s. Her competent, if often simplified, survey of cultural and sexual attitudes at times assumes a tone of moral conservatism, as when she states that "divorce was the logical outcome of the quest for self-fulfillment" popular during the 1970s, or when she ponders the "moral and ethical" issues of enhancing sexual performance through pharmaceuticals. While some of this material overlaps with Susan Bordo's The Male Body (1999) and Harrison Pope's The Adonis Complex (2000), Luciano's emphasis on historical and economic aspects of masculinity offers a refreshing perspective on Western views of the subject. From Booklist
College history teacher Luciano isn't interested in advising men on good grooming and tasteful dressing, despite what the title of her book might suggest. Instead, her study offers a serious but fluid and well-written "journey through the world of male vanity." She reports that eating disorders occur more frequently in American men than ever before and that increasing numbers of men resort to plastic surgery and hair modifications to increase their physical appeal. Why, Luciano asks, have men in this country apparently fallen into the "beauty trap so long assumed to be the special burden of women?" She examines social, economic, and cultural changes that "have been instrumental in shaping the new cult of male body image in postwar America," focusing her investigation on the four areas men have been most concerned about since the 1950s in terms of body alteration and enhancement: hair, physical fitness and body shape, cosmetic surgery, and sexual performance. A thought-provoking study. Brad Hooper

The high cost of having it all
By Charles S. Houser
Luciano's message is both served and undermined by her mesmerizing and even-toned prose. I found myself at times wishing that she would get on a soap box and spew alarmist Vance-Packard-like jeremiads. I wanted her to denounce the predatory industries--medical, pharmaceutical, fitness, clothing, advertising--that seem to conspire to make people (in this case, men) so discontent (and preoccupied) with themselves. But Luciano is careful not to do this. The responsibility for this mad obsession with looking good (read "young") must be shared. Beginning with the 50s Organizational Man, Luciano traces how men's attitudes about themselves, their place in the economy, and their relationship with women has evolved in the last half-century. Though she presents more than adequate data (statistical and anecdotal) to make her points (her descriptions of hair-replacement and penile enlargement surgeries are not for the squeamish), it is her ability to interpret the broader economic, societal, and psychological issues that make "Looking Good" such a fascinating read.
If you read and enjoy this book, you'll probably also enjoy "The Male Body: A New Look at Men in Public and in Private" by Susan Bordo. Bordo's take on this subject is more personal. I find it interesting that two of the most insightful books written about men recently have come from the pens of female academics.

It's OK. A nice read, but nothing great.
By A Customer
This book tells the recent history of why and how men have cared about their looks. As such, I think it's more informative than insightful. The most annoying thing about the book is that it is infused with an overly PC writing style: Quotation marks are overused in an attempt to distinguish traditional meanings from newer, liberal notions. Words like "male" and "beauty" are put in quotes with regularity, as if to repetitively stress, "if that word means anything, I mean it in the sense of what the unenlightened would say it means." The book would have been better served if it actually broached the anthropological as well as historical basis for what these words have meant to people at different times. This would have provided the tone of objectivity that the book aims for but lacks; its arguments would have been more persuasive.
On that note, I should mention that the author tends to overreach, drawing conclusions from isolated quotes and other insufficient evidence. This left me scratching my head all too often, saying, "Well, not necessarily." All in all, if you're interested in a history of the subject of the male beauty obsession, this book is a passable buy; I would skip it if you're looking for a thoughtful historical analysis.

Nothing different from other book
By ben g.
I didn't think this book was well-written and any different from another book called The Adonis Complex, which was much more interesting and focused. From what I understand, the authors of the Adonis Complex were the original doctors behind many of the studies Luciano discusses, including the GI Joe study. I suggest picking up The Adonis Complex if you want a better understanding of this problem in men.

About the Author
ANTHONY BLOOM – son of a Russian diplomat, physician, monk and archbishop of the Russian Orthodox Church in Great Britain – earned the respect and affection of countless people worldwide because of his deep humanity and tireless witness to the Gospel. Although he died in 2003 at the age of 89, he continues to offer guidance in the spiritual life through his writings.

From AudioFile
Based on a 1970 book by a much loved archbishop of the Russian Orthodox Church in Great Britain (who died last year at age 89), this audio is a splendidly narrated presentation of the author's writing on mercy and hope. Moving "Godward," he says, is not for the fainthearted, proud, or overconfident. It's a humbling experience that takes us to something deeper and richer, but only if we respect the power and abundance that God exercises in our lives on His terms. Compared to God, we possess nothing and are master of nothing. Humbly connecting with His benevolence is the only path to the love we are all meant to have. So Much Wisdom In So Few Pages
By K.H.
Though hailed as a primer for "people who have never prayed before", this book, written by Archbishop Anthony Bloom, is nothing short of spectacular. The book's orinigal title, "School of Prayer" is more appropiate because this book should be utilized by all Christians.
In the last few years, a resurgence of prayer books liek the "Prayer of Jabex" by Wilkinson and "Prayer of Jesus" and "The Covering" by Hannagraff are selling of the charts, this book by Bloom is far more superior than their text. Though only about 144 pages, there is much wisdom and the book should be read slowly after much spiritual contemplation.
It is easy to read, yet it contains so much theological depth that it is truly amazing. The first 20 pages are average as it has an interview with Bloom. The real meat begins in chapter one title "The Absence of God" where Bloom writes, "If you look at the relationship (us and God) in terms of mutual relationship, you would see that God could complain about us a great deal more thann we about Him. We complain that He does make Himself present to us for a few minutes we reserve for Him, but what about the twenty-three and half hours during which God may be knocking at our door and we answer 'I am busy..."
This is just a taste - buy the book for a deep look at prayer. You will forever be thankful.

but what I have read is excellent and very deep on the subject of prayer
By Amazon Customer
I have not finished the book yet, but what I have read is excellent and very deep on the subject of prayer. This book was recommended to me by the Catholic Byzantine Seminary of SS. Cyril and Methodius in Pennsylvania, and is both a book on beginning and advanced prayer.

A Beautiful and Moving Book
By Chad Davies
For anyone who is seeking a deeper prayer life, whether as one who is beginning a journey or someone who is well along the path of faith, this work is an undescribably rich gift from Metropolitan Anthony to the reader. As I read each chapter, I found myself challenged and encouraged to take my prayer life more deeply inward.
Metropolitan Anthony does not just introduce techniques or give situational advice to finding a fuller prayer life, He challenges the reader to examine an entirely different way of looking at the source of deep and effective prayer. Unlike many evangelical books on the topic, Metropolitan Anthony seeks to teach us how to fish (to use the well worn cliche) so that we may be fed for a lifetime.
I encourage anyone who reads this review to buy this book, read it slowly, over time and allow it to enrich your relationship with God.

I Believe
By benjamin
The Apostles' Creed is one of the most ancient liturgical texts within the history of Christianity. Although its precise origins are not known - it was attributed to the Apostles in late antiquity - it likely dates to the 2nd or 3rd century. It appears that there were several variants of the Apostles' Creed; this particular commentary dates from around 404 CE, and works off of the Roman version. This latter point is particularly important, for whereas the Apostles' Creed has since been standardized, in the early 5th century there were still some minor variations on this Creed. Rufinus' own theological exposition comes straight out of the very language of the Roman version - although he notes differences between the Roman version and that held by the Greeks (ie, the Eastern Church, which would later call itself the Orthodox Church).

For Rufinus, there are three articles in the Creed - the first pertaining to the Father, the second to the Son and the third to the Holy Spirit - each of which consists of multiple clauses. The Commentary is an exposition of each article and the clauses contained within it. Rufinus believes the Creed itself to have been composed by the Apostles (ch. 2) and that it had survived entirely intact since their time in the Church of Rome (ch. 3). The method of explanation employed depends upon tradition, apologetics and Scriptural proof-texts.

It should be noted that in accord with early Christian methods of interpretation, Rufinus does not reduce the Biblical text to its "plain sense"; in Old Testament writings he sees prophecies pertaining to eh Christian message, in some of St. Paul's more ambiguous statements he sees references to the Cross of Christ. What we are given, then, at points, is a reading of historical events through Scripture where both are presupposed to be filled with symbolic meaning. Specifically, St. Paul's words pertaining to "the height and the depth and the breadth" is understood by Rufinus to pertain to the Cross: "The portion of [the cross] which was fixed in the earth was the depth. By height he meant the part which stretches above the earth and towers upwards, by breadth the parts which extend outwards to the right hand and to the left" (ch. 14). The cross as a historical event takes on cosmic significance through a symbolic interpretation grounded in Scripture. Although some readers might find such interpretation to be imaginative - at best, ridiculous at worst - such a way of "reading" history and Scripture and, indeed, the various objects in the world ought to be taken seriously, for it was the worldview of the early Christians - one which many lived and died for. Within this framework, the very material elements of salvation history are given the greatest spiritual significance. It's a view well worth thinking about.

J. N. D. Kelley's introduction is nothing short of phenomenal. Not only does he include the Roman version of the Apostles' Creed, but the Aquilean version as well, noting the differences between the two and the ways in which the history of transmission and reception played itself out in the early Church. He notes, as well, how Rufinus' view of the Biblical canon seems to have largely depended upon that given by the Greek Father St. Athanasius the Great - although Athanasius included some books that Rufinus exluded, and Rufinus included some books that Athanasius included. They both, however, included the same three additional books - The Shepherd of Hermas, The Two Ways (which is likely the same as the Didache), and The Judgment of Peter (which is now lost) - in the New Testament under the section "Ecclesiastical Books" (that is, books accepted as helpful for instruction, but not for the composition of doctrine - a category that Anglicans, for instance, would apply to what those books now called the Apocryphal or Deuterocanonical books of the Old Testament). The history of the canonization of the Biblical books is absolutely fascinating, and Rufinus provides some very interesting information on this matter.

This is a wonderful book. At its most basic level it is a fine work of catechesis (teaching) - which Rufinus intended it to be. The major themes of the Trinity and supporting themes such as the Church, the forgiveness of sins and the resurrection of the dead are all touched upon in a clear and concise manner. As a historical work, it also contains much of interest; it is not just the devil that is in the details, but worldviews as well - and coming into contact with these worldviews will open up the reader's eyes to both the past and the present. Reading it both as a catechetical and a historical work will put the reader in touch with something of the height, breadth and depth of the Church's tradition - something that Rufinus no doubt would have been also pleased with. Although I trust that Rufinus would have held that this has to do with subject matter and not his own skill, I think it is probably a little bit of both. This book is highly recommended.

The Other Eighties: A Secret History of America in the Age of Reagan, by Bradford Martin

In this engaging book, Bradford Martin illuminates a different 1980s than many remember―one whose history has been buried under the celebratory narrative of conservative ascendancy. Ronald Reagan looms large in most accounts of the period, encouraging Americans to renounce the activist and liberal politics of the 1960s and '70s and embrace the resurgent conservative wave. But a closer look reveals that a sizable swath of Americans strongly disapproved of Reagan's policies throughout his presidency. With a weakened Democratic Party scurrying for the political center, many expressed their dissatisfaction outside electoral politics. Unlike the civil rights and Vietnam-era protesters, activists of the 1980s often found themselves on the defensive, struggling to preserve the hard-won victories of the previous era. Their successes, then, were not in ushering in a new era of progressive reforms but in effecting change in areas from professional life to popular culture, while beating back an even more forceful political shift to the right.

From Publishers Weekly
Martin, a history professor at Bryant University in Rhode Island, aims to get past "reaganocentric" views of the '80s by chronicling the efforts of the diminished but far from dead political left to minimize what they saw as the negative effects of President Reagan's conservative domestic and foreign policies. Martin covers much ground, exploring the left's efforts—hardly secret, either then or now—to influence the culture wars, nuclear disarmament, South African apartheid, interventionist Central American policies, abortion rights, and gay rights. Martin writes with a welcome evenhandedness and a knack for choosing small events that speak for the larger context, annotating each political battle with insights into the movement's legacy. His descriptions of the success of Act Up in bringing attention to the AIDS epidemic, college students' building of shantytowns to focus attention on South African apartheid, and the women's movement's efforts to protect abortion rights are all excellent, as is his description of the arts as a counterweight to the Reagan cultural agenda. This is a valuable picture of the complex political cross-currents that swirled in a decade too often seen simplistically as "Morning in America." (Mar.)

From Booklist
Hailed as one of the most popular U.S. presidents, Ronald Reagan nonetheless was a very polarizing figure, provoking a backlash against the conservatism he represented. Martin examines the other side of the Reagan era—as the 1980s are commonly regarded—by looking closely at efforts to address social problems at home and abroad. He highlights individuals who supported and sustained cultural changes, from pro-choice to gay and lesbian rights, student activism, opposition to nuclear arms, and AIDs activism, and how progressive impulses played out through culture. He begins by focusing on grassroots activism on issues including the nuclear freeze movement and goes on to offer case studies of the cultural impact of opposition to conservatism, including the social consciousness of pop culture reflected by movies and music. In a separate section, he focuses on changes in group politics as African Americans, feminists, and gays pushed back against conservative backlash. Martin makes no claim to be totally comprehensive but presents an interesting counterpoint to the notion of the 1980s as a period of conservatism and traditionalism. --Vanessa Bush

Review

“Other than Sean Wilentz's The Age of Reagan, Martin has created the first major historical work on this crucial decade. The Other Eighties is much needed opening salvo in a serious discussion about the role of dissent in this era . . . A new and exciting interpretation of this decade that successfully challenges what we think we know.” ―W. Scott Poole, PopMatters

“In arguing for a 1980s that not only didn't uniformly embrace the superficial conformity of the Reagan years but actively laid groundwork for today's progressive movements, Martin does valuable work.” ―Kate Tuttle, The Boston Globe

“A readable stroll into the bad old days of Piss Christ and Jesse Helms--and guaranteed to make you dig up your Black Flag and Minor Threat tapes.” ―Kirkus Reviews

“Should be required reading for strategists on the left.” ―David Mulcahey, Bookforum

“A valuable picture of the complex political cross-currents that swirled in a decade too often seen simplistically as ‘Morning in America.' ” ―Publishers Weekly

“Before history reduces the 1980s to Reagan, Rambo, and MTV, Bradford Martin has provided a bracing and much-needed chronicle of the decade's oppositional culture. With grace and clarity, The Other Eighties reveals the accomplishments, limitations, and legacy of the era's often-overlooked political and social activists.” ―Alan Light, former editor-in-chief, Vibe and Spin magazines

“Bradford Martin's fascinating and extensively researched book will take you on a revelatory trip to the other side of Reagan's 1980s.” ―Judith E. Smith, Professor of American Studies, University of Massachusetts Boston

“Bradford Martin's pathbreaking history of cultural and political opposition in the 1980s challenges the simplistic narrative of a ‘Reagan Revolution.' His concise, punchy use of primary sources to document big events like the Freeze, anti-Apartheid, and grunge will be hard to ignore. The Other Eighties shows how the ‘long sixties' were even longer than many of us realized.” ―Van Gosse, author of Rethinking the New Left: An Interpretative History

“The best history is that which looks beneath the surface of an era to discover what was happening on the lower frequencies. Readers seeking a richer, more complete understanding of the Age of Reagan should start here.” ―Robert Widell, Assistant Professor of History, University of Rhode Island

“In this provocative and persuasive book, Bradford Martin challenges the prevailing portrait of the 1980s as an era of a conservative ascendancy. Focusing on a wide range of social and political actors--AIDS activists, the divestment movement, welfare rights organizers, post-punk performers and their audiences--Martin constructs an alternative portrait of eighties political culture. An original and thoughtful book, The Other Eighties is sure to prompt significant reconsideration of this crucial period in recent United States history.” ―Bruce J. Schulman, author of The Seventies: The Great Shift in American Culture, Society, and Politics

well written
By Luis Cole
This book illustrated the condition of American politics during the time of the well-loved former president Raegan. I'm very impressed on how the author explained things using different perspectives such as the punk rock, grunge and metal music, Race activism and others. If you want to learn more about the dynamics of American Politics, this books is for you!

guide to subversives!
By arthur smith
Reagean's anti-left propaganda was covered by censorship and reactionary acts that disabled different youth organizations in letting the whole nation know about the anomalies in the administration of Raegan's administration. moreover, this book tackled different aspects of the american society such as racism, pop culture and even the underground music scene.

Give me a break...
By A reader
The author seems to believe that the aspects of the 1980s he discusses are somehow unknown or hidden. Nonsense. Of course the nuclear freeze, the Sandinista worship, and all the rest of it were out there and very influential (and very well covered by the sympathetic liberal media). This was particularly true for the area in which I grew up. The other eighties, for me, simply WERE the eighties. I never encountered anyone who had a good word to say for Ronald Reagan. So, nothing new here. Martin also assumes that these movements were inspired by genuine idealism rather than by a juvenile desire to stick it to the Man.
There are other problems with the book. The sections on music, for example, are so ill-informed as to be completely embarrassing. I'll mention only two examples of this:

1. Nobody in history has EVER referred to him- or herself as a "post-punker".
2. Martin mentions the Dead Kennedys' reprise of "California Uber Alles" in which they changed the lyrics and turned it into an attack on Reagan. However, he never addresses the lyrics of the original song, because it would be really hard to construe these as "left" in any way.

Anyway, don't waste your time.
