Pieces of My Mind: Essays and Criticism 1958-2002, by Frank Kermode

Sir Frank Kermode has been writing peerless literary criticism for more than a half-century. Pieces of My Mind includes his own choice of his major essays since 1958, beginning with his extraordinary study of "Poet and Dancer Before Diaghilev" and ending with a marvelous consideration of Shakespeare's Othello and Verdi-Boito's Otello. Important essays on Hawthorne, on Wallace Stevens, on problems in literary theory and analysis, on Auden, on "Secrets and Narrative Sequence," and three previously unpublished essays (including one on "Memory" and one on "Forgetting") fill out this rich and rewarding volume. Pieces of My Mind also contains recent considerations of the work of major modern writers--Don DeLillo, Raymond Carver, Tom Paulin, and others.

Of Kermode's last book, Shakespeare's Language, Richard Howard wrote that it was "a triumph of inauguration and the crowning action of his splendid career of criticism. It is, and will doubtless remain, the first book one should read about Shakespeare's plays, and with those plays." Pieces of My Mind has equal authority and power, and it will be equally praised.

From Publishers Weekly
Born on the Isle of Man and linked over the years with Cambridge, Harvard and Columbia Universities, Kermode belongs to the superleague of internationally famous old-school literary critics that also includes Harold Bloom, Geoffrey Hartman and Christopher Ricks; his best-known works in America include The Sense of an Ending, Shakespeare's Language and an autobiography, Not Entitled. This hefty and very worthwhile collection samples his interests from opera to modern dance, from the New Testament to the English novelist Ian McEwan. It includes chapters from Kermode's most famous books, freestanding academic pieces and lectures, essay-reviews from the London Review of Books, and four substantial unpublished essays, including a provocative exploration of literary and cognitive "forgetting." Kermode's recurring subjects include Shakespeare, Wallace Stevens, Joseph Conrad, modern fiction and narrative generally, and the nature of interpretation. If his most theoretical work seems very much of its time (the 1970s and '80s), the work on novels, poems and plays stands up quite well, exhibiting Kermode's blend of sophisticated reading and consistently accessible writing. "Shakespeare and Boito" (a new piece) compares the original Othello to the one in Verdi's opera; "The Man in the Macintosh" (1979) asks Joyceans, and New Testament readers, "why do we prefer enigmas to muddles?" Kermode can simply observe, or ask questions, rather than advancing extended arguments, a way of reading that proves as instructive as it is satisfying.

From Booklist
Distinguished British critic Kermode celebrates his often-misunderstood calling in his preface to this substantial collection of critical essays culled from four decades of work, writing that "the business of explanation--of elucidation and comparisons--has to go on as long as art goes on." And criticism, Kermode remarks, can and should be as pleasurable as it is useful, although his idea of pleasure is of a rigorous nature. Kermode parses complicated, even esoteric aspects of story and text, metaphysics and poetry, and the link between social change and the evolution of the novel, yet he is unfailingly clear and cheerfully engaging, classy, and stimulating. His long essays chart fresh discoveries in the work of Wallace Stevens and retrieve a remarkable yet forgotten American dancer, Loie Fuller, and a neglected writer, Christopher Burney, a British agent captured in occupied France who wrote behind bars. Then there are brilliant reflections on Conrad, brain-twisting considerations of our notions of time and how they have influenced literature, and short takes on living writers, all criticism at its finest. Kermode's collection of essays demonstrates a brilliant mind scanning the diverse subjects to which it was led by curiosity and passion. As a literary critic, Kermode is an exemplar of the creative possibilities of theory-- rather than operating in one single mode, he adopts freely as he sees fit from a range of theoretical and disciplinary perspectives. These essays prove the value in a commitment to following personal interests rather than fashionable academic mandates and to wearing critical perspectives as a mask: for the sake of entertainment, flashes of enlightenment, and personal freedom. With a passion for literature, and for thinking about literature's bearing upon itself, Kermode writes beautifully and clearly. He carries literature beyond its own formal bounds, without subordinating it to 'larger', 'more serious' concerns (such as Philosophy, Politics or History) though acknowleding its interactions with these disciplines. More specifically, Kermode shows a consistent concern with hermeneutics and narrative as code, returning again and again to an interest in the New Testament that appears even before his well-known "The Genesis of Secrecy".

life/style
By Stephanie Donnelly
It's beautifully fitting that this collection of Kermode's essays begins with "Poet and Dancer Before Diaghilev." Kermode moves with balletic grace and alacrity through subjects ranging from Parisian salon culture of the '20s to Don DeLillo, often using the written word (Yeats, Stevens) as a point of departure for further critical and cultural adventuring. Pieces of My Mind is a pure pleasure from start to finish -- a generous testament to Sir Kermode's love and wonder for many, many things.

Not really Kermode at his best
By 3rd Day Believer
This guy can write so well, but this book is a relatively boring amalgam of essays, mostly about nothing of real interest. There's some great Kermode writing, but not much of it is to be found here.

The Night Thoreau Spent in Jail: A Play, by Jerome Lawrence, Robert E. Lee

A reissue of a now classic American drama.

If the law is of such a nature that it requires you to be an agent of injustice to another, then I say, break the law." So wrote the young Henry David Thoreau in 1849. Three years earlier, Thoreau had put his belief into action and refused to pay taxes because of the United States government's involvement in the Mexican War, which Thoreau firmly believed was unjust. For his daring and unprecedented act of protest, he was thrown in jail. The Night Thoreau Spent in Jail is a celebrated dramatic presentation of this famous act of civil disobedience and its consequences. Its poignant, lively, and accessible scenes offer a compelling exploration of Thoreau's philosophy and life.

“A superior play, a literary work as well as a theatrical experience. Thoreau would illuminate any season.” ―George Oppenheimer, Newsday

“Absolutely fascinating.” ―Richard L. Coe, The Washington Post

“There is a great deal to enjoy in this play.” ―Clive Barnes, The New York Times

From the Publisher
"If the law is of such nature that it requires you to be an agent of injustice to another, then I say, break the law." In 1849, the young Henry David Thoreau, philosopher, poet, naturalist, penned these timeless words in his Civil Disobedience. Three years earlier Thoreau had refused to pay taxes to the government, which was engaged in the Mexican War. He condemned the war as unjust--a war never formally declared, begun without Congressional authorization, a savage and bloody war fought to assuage the United States' territorial ambitions. For his courageous and unprecedented act of protest, he was thrown in jail. Thoreau was a man of the future. Over the past century, his action has had worldwide repercussions. Tolstoy was influenced by his stand, and Gandhi based his passive resistance campaign on the words of the philosopher of Walden Pond. Now, Thoreau's action take on a new relevance. The Night Thoreau Spent In Jail is an essential work for today's world.

"The play must rank among the most brilliant intellectual stimulants of a decade, perhaps even of the century."--Columbus Dispatch.

Greatness "transcends" beyond words
By Marie D
THE NIGHT THOREAU SPENT IN JAIL describes thinker Henry David Thoreau short experience in jail after not paying his taxes. Employing flashbacks within flashbacks, playwrights Lawrence and Lee take on the task of describing Thoreau's life so far. Filled with witty remarks and humorous dialogue, this book transcends what I can say about it.

After having been assigned to read this book for my AP 11 English class, I started out first assignment: Read to page 50. To my surprise, once I got to page 50, I couldn't put it down. My teacher had warned us about this scenario. She said the book was cleverly hilarious and enjoyable. Naturally--it being an ASSIGNED book--I doubted her words.

When I got into the play, within the first few words of dialogue, I was laughing out loud. The writers, whose research was obviously accurate and concise, tickled me when Ralph Waldo Emerson asked "who" his umbrella was, making a reference to his supposed contraction of Alzheimer's disease. Thoreau's teachings of God and fields and notetaking were pleasing and enriching.

Not only was I thrilled by his paradoxical dialogue,

[In a nutshell...

Thoreau to a student: Why are you taking notes?

Student: So I can remember what you say.

Thoreau: But then it's the notebook that does the remembering, not you.

(She puts away her notebook)

Thoreau: Why have you stopped taking notes?

Student: Because you said to.

Thoreau: Why would you do what I say?]

but I also took away something from it, which is a common moral you would see in books and movies today: Do things for yourself, and pay no attention to what others say or think. Though the moral is a bit overused, Lee and Lawrence refresh it and make the lesson new placing it in the midst of witticism and transcendentalist teachings.

Now, the only thing left for me to do is write a thank you card to my teacher for treating us with this wonderful book.

An Enjoyable Night with Genius
By James Hiller
Henry David Thoreau may be experiencing a sort of revival as of late. His treatise on civil disobidience is a hallmark of progressive action today. Upset that his government declared an unjust war, Thoreau refuses to pay taxes to show his digust, which lands him one lauded night in jail. Thus is the basis for this extremely inventive, timely play "The Night Thoreau Spent in Jail".

Not just a night in jail, but a brave overview Thoreau's life ensues, showing snippets of his events, meetings, and philosophies that were so critical to the development of his transcendentalism. This isn't a dry biography, however. The authors weave a Thoreau that is a rich tapestry of thought and action. He is both endearing and complex, wise and unaware.

We enter the play with Henry in his cell, and begins to relive some important moments in his life. We meet Emerson and his wife, Henry's mother, and favorite brother John, as they inact with his memories and become alive themselves. The ebullience of John is obvious, which makes his passing much more severe. This play helps to maginify the brilliance of a brilliant man, while making him more human, more real.

The Night Thoreau Spent in Jail is a great read, and will springboard your interests to study this amazing thinker.

An Accessible and Concise Look at the Warren Court
By suzy murray
Professor Horowitz provides a very accessible accounting of the Warren Court's impact on America and American jurisprudence. For those with legal training, this short history puts all the doctrines learned in law school-the void for vagueness application to the First Amendment, the Carolene Products Footnote Four analysis-into a tidy, compact context. For the non-lawyer, Horowitz avoids the legalese and shows how the Warren Court rulings affected the course of American events. Horowitz examines the court's impact in several areas: civil rights, democractic principles of governance, free speech, and the incorporation doctrine as applied to criminal procedure. Horowitz truly has admiration for his subject, but that admiration is not unqualified, and he takes the court to task for buckling under McCarthyism and for not standing up for its First Amendment principles, although Horowitz clearly blames one justice, Justice Frankfurter, for the court's reluctance to take on McCarthy. An excellent summary of the Warren Court, its decisions, and the justices who together made up its collective personality.

Wonderful Book
By A Customer
I just took a class with Professor Horwitz of the same title here at Harvard, and this book clearly summarizes the major themes of the Warren Court. It is wonderfully written, moves very fast, but there are details given about this wonderful era of change.
The book centers on the Warren Court's view of substantive democracy as a central organizing principle for the many decisions. It espouses the ideal that while responding to times, the Court also had higher ideals and used these two together.
The book works through major case areas and is divided as such, looking first at the race relations and civil rights cases, then moving on to the response to McCarthyism with Free Speech, and views of Rights and Democracy. Each section builds on each other until Horwitz's great theme is revealed.
It really gives the reader a great understanding of the Court, and one can come out of it feeling great. It works well with the course and would work very well on its own too.

Catherine of Siena : The Dialogue (Classics of Western Spirituality), by Catherine of Siena

This is the crowning spiritual work of the only woman other than Teresa of Avila to be granted the title of Doctor of the Roman Catholic Church. This volume was simply called "my book" by the fourteenth-century Italian saint. The aim of her book (one of the first books to see print in Spain, Germany, Italy, and England), says Dr. Noffke in her Foreword, was "the instruction and encouragement of all those whose spiritual welfare was her concern." Catherine was "a mystic whose plunge into God plunged her deep into the affairs of society, Church and the souls who came under her influence." Professor Noffke goes on to call The Dialogue "a great tapestry to which Catherine adds stitch upon stitch until she is satisfied that she has communicated all she can of what she has learned of the way of God." In this, the sixth centenary of the great Dominican's death, we live in a time so badly in need of her sense of institutional reform as flowing from Divine truth, love and charity. Dr. Noffke says: "In the opening pages of The Dialogue Catherine presents a series of questions or petitions to God the Father each of which receives a response and amplification. There is the magnificent symbolic portrayal of Christ as the bridge. There are specific discussions of discernment, tears (true and false spiritual emotion), truth, the sacramental heart ('mystic body') of the Church, divine providence, obedience…. It is not so much a treatise to be read as it is a conversation to be entered into with earnest leisure and leisurely earnest."

About the Author
Noffke has been researching, translating, and interpreting the works of Catherine ofSiena since 1976.

Giuliana Cavallini, O.P., was the Director of the Centro Nazionale di Studi Cateriniani in Rome, as well as an editor of St. Catherine of Siena s dialogue and author of additional works on the saint. She purposefully wrote her biography of "St. Martin de Porres" as a story neither chronological nor critical. Rather, she gathered various episodes taken from the testimony given during the process of his beatification, from people who had known Martin in his lifetime. The completed work received the Imprimatur from Cletus F. O Donnell, and was originally published in 1963. Giuliana Cavallini is also the author of "Things Visible and Invisible: Images in the Spirituality of St. Catherine of Siena".

Most Inspirational book aside from the Bible
By Glutton for books
I highly recommend this book to any person seeking to be inspired to improve their lives, not through fear of chatisement, but due to being motivated by love. This is the first book that I have ever read, where I wanted to write the author, or in this case it would be the interpretor, and to thank her for the wisdom and insight that her work gave me. Just reflecting on the book gives me a warm feeling.

Catherine of Siena was a mystic who claimed to receive advice from God, and who also worked miracles in her time. This book relates the advice in an incredibly accessiblt tone. She writes about issues related to every aspect of life, our association with one another, and how to please God. Her advice is helpful to people from all walks of life, the lay person and religious as well.

Central to her message is the great love that God has for us all. That God loved us before we knew and loved Him, and the onyl way to give likewise such love to strangers who know not and possibly will not love us. She writes too about one of the greatest ways that we can offend God is by not believing that he has sufficient mercy to forgive us our sins, if we are contrite and ask him for forgiveness, because this belief contradicts the notion that God's mercy and love for us is great. She writes that sin is horrible becuase it ofends God's goodness, and it harms our neighbor.

She cites many biblical sources that reflect the advice that she has recieved. It seems cliche to hail a book as life-changing but this book greatly transformed me and my relationship with God for the better. It is an inspiring and uplifting read, and may be particularly useful to those experiencing spiritual dryness.

Austere and Awesome
By Billyjack D'Urberville
This is one of the most important volumes in the Classics of Western Spirituality series. More is commonly known of the life of this young saint than her writings; she is the patron of many American parishes. Her example and directions to high churchmen were an important corrective in a pivotal moment of Church history. But one feels that the importance of her writings is only now becoming clear. Few are familiar enough with them.

Be warned: this twenty-something seer was austere. The transcriptions of her locutions, done by her confreres, are not prettied up, as they should not be. They convey a plain authenticity. Sentences and paragraphs run on and are often difficult to untangle. It can be very slow going; any of these dialogues can make for a wearying sitting. And the claim is absolute: God talking directly to Catherine in her ecstatic state, she as the mere transmitter, the confreres getting it down as best they can.

Of all the mysteries explicated here, however, the pinnacle and the unique aspect is the discussion of the mechanism of the Mystical Body of Christ. While a key and unique aspect of Catholicism that was there from the beginning, only in century 20 was it beginning to be more fully explicated by the likes of Bishop Sheen and Pius 12. The closest thing in Protestantism to it is the concept of Christian fellowship, but the Mystical Body is both more active and more exact than that. Many, including surprisingly Catholics, will reject this teaching in the radical and awesome form stated here. Of course, the writings and visions of saints are not matters of faith, except to the extent they track definitive dogmatic statements. But one would be challenged to explain how an untutored youth outside any formal religious house could have uttered a theology of this loftiness, depth, and sophistication. One thing is guaranteed: the Mystical Body theology set out in Catherine's locutions will never leave you -- the Divine Plan working itself out through the multiplicity of human gifts, randomly distributed, by a God who is most pleased when individual faithful share and exchange them toward Divine ends.

Many persons in and out of the Church are seeking spiritual experience of one sort or another, as if pinching themselves to know that they are real. They would be better off reading Dialogues nos. 6, 7, and 8, and meditating on them for a year to the exclusion of anything else.

A portrait of the priest and colonialist who is one of the most important figures in California's history

In the 1770s, just as Britain's American subjects were freeing themselves from the burdens of colonial rule, Spaniards moved up the California coast to build frontier outposts of empire and church. At the head of this effort was Junípero Serra, an ambitious Franciscan who hoped to convert California Indians to Catholicism and turn them into European-style farmers. For his efforts, he has been beatified by the Catholic Church and widely celebrated as the man who laid the foundation for modern California. But his legacy is divisive. The missions Serra founded would devastate California's Native American population, and much more than his counterparts in colonial America, he remains a contentious and contested figure to this day.

Steven W. Hackel's groundbreaking biography, Junípero Serra: California's Founding Father, is the first to remove Serra from the realm of polemic and place him within the currents of history. Born into a poor family on the Spanish island of Mallorca, Serra joined the Franciscan order and rose to prominence as a priest and professor through his feats of devotion and powers of intellect. But he could imagine no greater service to God than converting Indians, and in 1749 he set off for the new world. In Mexico, Serra first worked as a missionary to Indians and as an uncompromising agent of the Inquisition. He then became an itinerant preacher, gaining a reputation as a mesmerizing orator who could inspire, enthrall, and terrify his audiences at will. With a potent blend of Franciscan piety and worldly cunning, he outmaneuvered Spanish royal officials, rival religious orders, and avaricious settlers to establish himself as a peerless frontier administrator. In the culminating years of his life, he extended Spanish dominion north, founding and promoting missions in present-day San Diego, Los Angeles, Monterey, and San Francisco. But even Serra could not overcome the forces massing against him. California's military leaders rarely shared his zeal, Indians often opposed his efforts, and ultimately the missions proved to be cauldrons of disease and discontent. Serra, in his hope to save souls, unwittingly helped bring about the massive decline of California's indigenous population.

On the three-hundredth anniversary of Junípero Serra's birth, Hackel's complex, authoritative biography tells the full story of a man whose life and legacies continue to be both celebrated and denounced. Based on exhaustive research and a vivid narrative, this is an essential portrait of America's least understood founder.

Review

“Meticulously researched . . . a must-read for anyone interested in Serra, California, or the history of colonialism in the Americas.” ―Publishers Weekly

“Hackel's volume sets a new scholarly standard and should be read by anyone interested in the early history of California.” ―Robert M. Senkewicz, Journal of San Diego History

“Steven W. Hackel's Junípero Serra: California's Founding Father dispels the myths (both laudatory and demonizing) surrounding the man who founded missions up and down California in the 18th century. But it is far more than a corrective. It's a tale of Spain, Mexico, and America; of faith, politics, and pioneering; and of a man who was neither wholly sinner nor saint.” ―Zocalo Public Square

“A consummate archivist of California history, Hackel has produced a definitive Golden State biography.” ―Kirkus Reviews

“At last, in Steven W. Hackel's Junípero Serra, we have an intelligent and authoritative biography of the founder of California. Hackel's engaging narrative deftly transports us to the end of the eighteenth century and the frontier of the Spanish empire. His Serra is neither sinner nor saint, but rather a devout idealist who quietly helps unleash powerful forces of social change. Junípero Serra is an essential contribution to the history of the West.” ―Héctor Tobar, author of The Barbarian Nurseries

“Junípero Serra was a man for all seasons: a saint as well as an ogre, a ‘founding father,’ an agricultural visionary, and a merciless imperialist―in short, a figure whose legacy is nothing if not polarizing. Steven W. Hackel is a courageous biographer. His portrait of the Franciscan priest who invented California doesn’t shy away from controversy: it is as evenhanded as it is humane. It proves, yet again, that this nation wasn’t built only by Puritans; it was also shaped by Spanish conquistadores, explorers, and missionaries whose choices continue to define us in countless ways.” ―Ilan Stavans, general editor of The Norton Anthology of Latino Literature

“Steven W. Hackel's stunning biography so fully re-creates Father Junípero Serra's eighteenth-century life that one can almost feel the passionate certitude and searing drive that Serra employed to convert so many native Californians to Christianity and the cultural destruction and human emptiness that Serra's success unleashed upon them after his death. Hackel's exhaustive research quietly magnifies the measured judgments that propel this compellingly intimate yet historically expansive biography. It surpasses anything ever written about the West Coast's most potent and controversial ‘founding father.'” ―Ilan Stavans, general editor of The Norton Anthology of Latino Literature

“In this rich portrait of Father Junípero Serra, we see entire worlds collide, overlap, and forever influence one another. As complex and remarkable as the times in which he lived, Serra has long deserved a careful, smart, and judicious study, and now we have it.” ―William Deverell, chair, Department of History, University of Southern California

“Steven W. Hackel's Junípero Serra is both a compelling narrative and a comprehensive study of the complexities of Serra's life and the transformative events of his time. A masterpiece.” ―José Refugio de la Torre Curiel, author of Twilight of the Mission Frontier

“Junípero Serra is a must-read for anyone interested in the history of California and for lovers of biography.” ―Sylvia L. Hilton, coeditor of Nexus of Empire

The Go To book on Padre Junipero Serra
By M. James
I'm surprised to be the first person to review this interesting book recently published about Fr. Junipero Serra, the founder of several California Missions and the most well known Franciscan in America. I live ten minutes away from a California Mission and after reading this book was disappointed to learn it was founded by one of Fr. Serra's compatriots - not the holy man himself. This book is well-researched and very scholarly, objective and carefully balanced. The story is deftly written so as to keep your attention and isn't the least dry or long-winded, so to speak. It amazed me that so much information was available about someone who lived 250 years ago and the author presents the facts in such a way as though to resurrect Fr. Serra from his dusty resting place in Carmel, California. Padre Serra is seen as a flesh and blood person that you would like to share a cup of coffee with. Yes, there is controversy surrounding Fr. Serra and his treatment of the native peoples. Yet it needs to be kept in mind that it was a totally different world 250 years ago and we cannot judge it by our present day sensitivities. While our times are just as violent as the times in which Padre Serra lived we've become adept at rationalization of our own behavior while often being hypercritical of long-ago historical periods. If you can do a bit of time travel while reading this book and leave your 21st century mind-set behind, you will find an enjoyable trip ahead of you. Padre Serra was a product of his times; he made mistakes but he never gave up.

Informative and readable but with factual errors
By MNhistorian
On the plus side, Hackel has attempted to write a full life of Serra -- not just the typical focus on his work in Alta California. However, there are very few sources for the earlier parts of his life -- no doubt the reason why it has not previously been written about -- and this forces Hackel into a lot of speculation -- more than I as a professional historian was comfortable with. Far too often in the early chapters, Hackel tells us what Serra must have been thinking with words like "surely he thought" when a more responsible phrasing might have been "we can't know what he thought". Another positive about the book is that it is good, old-fashioned biography. It is free of jargon and postmodernist gimmicks. Some historians, for example, might have been tempted to hypothesize a sexual relationship between Serra and Francisco Palou, but Hackel sensibly avoids that sort of silliness. His speculations, numerous though they are, stay well within the bounds of good sense. A final positive is that the book is fairly well balanced. We certainly get to see Serra's darker side and it's fair to say that his pious excesses as well as his condescending attitudes towards the native peoples are not going to make him very likable to 21st century readers. But he was a man of his time, and Hackel rightly avoids making overmuch of those things. Unfortunately, problems leave more traces in the historical records than do the mundane, so we end up hearing rather more about Serra's conflicts with Spanish authorities and rather less about the successes of the day-to-day growth of some of the missions under his care. That's not Hackel's fault, but it was disappointing to have the successes largely reduced to lists (for example) of the numbers of Indians baptized and confirmed. Serra's real achievements often were harder to discern than his setbacks.
While I learned a lot from the book, and found it a very easy read, I did find some disturbing factual errors that lead me to wonder about Hackel's familiarity with early modern Catholicism. For example, he has Serra belonging to the Order of St. Francis -- which is not the name of the Franciscans. They are the Order of Friars Minor, thus the initials OFM after their names. Moreover, he calls Serra a "padre" ("father") after his profession while noting that he was not ordained. Of course, he would have been Fray Junipero, not Padre Junipero. He also often referred to priests as ministers several times, a jarringly Protestant term. Finally, Hackel invents a non-existent sacrament: "Final Communion". There was a death-bed sacrament, but it was Final Unction (or Anointing). Whenever possible, the dying would also participate in the sacraments of Penance (confessing their sins and receiving absolution) and the Eucharist (or Communion) but those were not separate sacraments for the dying. (One last oddity: Hackel has two separate tribes -- the Esselen and the Excelen -- in the same place near San Carlos mission, without noticing that surely are the same tribe just spelled differently!) When I find errors of detail like that in things that I know about, it makes me suspicious about errors lurking in the material I don't know about. Thus the reason for my middling rating. As a native Californian who visited all of the Franciscan missions as an elementary school student, I have long been fascinated with Serra and his colleagues. I do feel as if I now have a much better understanding of their world and especially of the political and military context within which they operated. In spite of the flaws, I do recommend this book for a wide audience.

Original documents offer real insights
By A Customer
I read the first edition which was cursed by many typographical errors. I expect that those have been fixed. Even with those errors, this book is a wonderful mix of Bong's letters home, "testamonials" from those who flew with him, and other source documents such as his logbook. I highly recommend this book as a way to get in the mind of a young WWII fighter pilot.

an interesting approach
By liz
Although not as exciting as a "first person" narrative, it is still an interesting look at what great family values this aviator posessed.
