The Age of Lincoln, by Orville Vernon Burton

Stunning in its breadth and conclusions, The Age of Lincoln is a fiercely original history of the five decades that pivoted around the presidency of Abraham Lincoln. Abolishing slavery, the age's most extraordinary accomplishment, was not its most profound. The enduring legacy of the age of Lincoln was inscribing personal liberty into the nation's millennial aspirations.

America has always perceived providence in its progress, but in the 1840s and 1850s pessimism accompanied marked extremism, as Millerites predicted the Second Coming, utopianists planned perfection, Southerners made slavery an inviolable honor, and Northerners conflated Manifest Destiny with free-market opportunity. Even amid historic political compromises the middle ground collapsed. In a remarkable reappraisal of Lincoln, the distinguished historian Orville Vernon Burton shows how the president's authentic Southernness empowered him to conduct a civil war that redefined freedom as a personal right to be expanded to all Americans. In the violent decades to follow, the extent of that freedom would be contested but not its central place in what defined the country.

Presenting a fresh conceptualization of the defining decades of modern America, The Age of Lincoln is narrative history of the highest order.

From Publishers Weekly
Arthur M. Schlesinger Jr.'s The Age of Jackson appeared in 1945 and has been an enduringly popular work with general readers. Burton, [University Distinguished Teacher/Scholar at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign] (In My Father's House Are Many Mansions), has written an ambitious sequel, or perhaps homage, on the age of Lincoln. Burton's intriguing thesis is that Lincoln's most profound achievement was not the abolition of slavery but the enshrinement of the principle of personal liberty protected by a body of law. Thus he elevated the founding fathers' (and Jackson's) more restricted vision to a universal one. The outbreak and course of the Civil War should be seen in the light of competing notions of what freedom meant, rather than (as has usually been the case) as a bloody conflict over black emancipation or states' rights. Lincoln, as Burton convincingly argues, both created his age and was a product of it: he matured in an America struggling with a rising free market and millennial impulses that sought Christian perfection. The ultimate result was the triumph of democratic capitalism. For readers seeking to comprehend the sweeping social, religious and cultural backdrop to the Civil War, Burton's book is a worthy heir to Schlesinger's. 8 pages of b&w illus.

Burton focuses on the five decades related to the presidency of Lincoln, beginning with the 1840s, chronicling in compelling detail the process of secession, the conduct of events in the course of the Civil War itself, and acts of reconstruction. The author examines all topics relevant to political, social, and economic life during that time, including slavery, racism, religion, the rapid growth of cities, and the expansion of secular cultures and the railroads. Adding another element to his thorough picture of the times, Burton profiles several leading figures, including Harriet Beecher Stowe, Henry David Thoreau, John Brown, John C. Calhoun, Frederick Douglass, General Winfield Scott, Booker T. Washington, and Mathew Brady. Augmented by eight pages of black-and-white illustrations, the book captures in excellent prose the early decades of modern American history. Cohen, George

Review

“The Age of Lincoln is a dazzling performance.” ―Justin Reynolds, The New York Sun

“Learned, lively and enriching… Burton's book is an eclectic, engaging romp across familiar but forgotten terrain… The Age of Lincoln reminds us that ideas are everything, and a book bursting with so many of them will provide robust reading for years to come.” ―Catherine Clinton, Chicago Tribune

“Burton, a professor at the University of Illinois, has plumbed the depths of recent Civil War scholarship to craft a winning narrative… He also convincingly communicates how the ideas and ideological conflicts that fueled the war have never truly disappeared from our national consciousness.” ―Chuck Leddy, Civil War Times magazine

“Burton hopes the book, which has been called ‘intriguing' and ‘dazzling' by critics, will provide a new perspective on a much-studied man.” ―Jessica Reaves, The Chicago Tribune Magazine

“A beautifully narrated treatment of the mid-to-late 19th-century years.” ―The Weekly Standard

“The Age of Lincoln offers a major reinterpretation of nineteenth-century American history from the age of Jackson to the Progressive era… Filled with fresh insights, The Age of Lincoln should open a new era in Civil War-Reconstruction scholarship.” ―David Herbert Donald, two-time Pulitzer-Prize winner and author of Lincoln

“Vernon Burton offers a bold new synthesis of the Civil War era in The Age of Lincoln. He shows how the ferment of religious reform merged with the dynamism of free-labor capitalism to forge a Northern political culture that triumphed over the South and slavery.” ―Jim McPherson, Pulitzer Prize winning author of Battle Cry of Freedom

“Based on a remarkable familiarity with the voluminous literature on the Civil War era as well as his own career of scholarly research, Vernon Burton offers a striking interpretation of the period, replete with new insights about the transformations--political, social, religious, and economic--that American society experienced during those tumultuous years.” ―Eric Foner

“A remarkable reconsideration of nineteenth century America, The Age of Lincoln seamlessly recounts secession, Civil War, and Reconstruction and renders them newly relevant to the twenty-first century.” ―John Hope Franklin

“Burton (Illinois) has written an elegant, sweeping synthesis of 19th-century US history that is learned, accessible, and often passionate. . . . It is beautifully written, and the treatments of race and class, the Old South, and Lincoln are superb and rich with insight. This is grand narrative in the best sense. This is grand narrative in the best sense. *Summing Up:* Highly recommended.” ―CHOICE

“Burton's book is a worthy heir to Schlesinger's [The Age of Jackson].” ―Publishers Weekly

“Beautifully written, brilliantly reasoned volume.” ―Library Journal, starred review

“A skilled artisan, he weaves together elements of religious, cultural, western, Native American, and political history. This is the most complete and concise history of the Civil War era that has ever been written.” ―The Journal of American History

“In magisterial fashion Vernon Burton's The Age of Lincoln covers the broad panorama of the American nation's most perilous years. Burton faultlessly traverses the social, economic, military, and political landscape of the era, carrying the story into the tumult of the 1890s. Especially striking is his treatment of the Reconstruction South when the victor's bi-racial, ‘national building' experiment failed, a situation analogous to the current sectarian strife in Iraq. The Age of Lincoln is bound to become a classic in the field.” ―Bertram Wyatt-Brown, Richard J. Milbauer Emeritus Professor of History, University of Florida, and Visiting Scholar, Johns Hopkins University

“Immensely readable . . . The award-winning Age of Lincoln situates the apparently outsized achievements of a heroic individual within patterns that made an indivisible United States into the most prosperous, the most powerful, and (at those times when the country remained true to its Lincolnian principles) the most inspiring country in the world.” ―Robert E. Bonner, Reviews in American History

“The Age of Lincoln will be ideal as a foundation text for undergraduate courses and graduate seminars on the nineteenth century; scholars of the period can engage it on a different level, which is a measure of the book's sophistication. These qualities and the range of the book's audience reflect Burton's own career, too, as both a nationally recognized scholar and a teacher. The book's accompanying website (www.theageoflincoln.com) offers a wealth of resources in the extensive notes and bibliographical essays. The notes include links to specific documents and Web sites rich in primary sources; the Resources section contains an extensive bibliography as well as scanned primary documents--both in original form and transcribed--that will be valuable in the classroom when used in conjunction with the book. Overall, the book and website together are a model of how a scholarly synthesis/monograph can be adapted to reach a wider audience and have a greater impact both in and out of the classroom.” ―Christopher Olsen, H-Law

A stunning achievment
By Ben D. Campbell
The Age of Lincoln" by Dr. Orville Vernon Burton is an insightful , hard headed , clear eyed look at the roots of the American Civil War , the path that led to eventual victory and the utter failure of Lincoln's successors to "win" the peace as decisively as he had won the war. This book is a stunning feat of original thinking, scholarship, and research. The depth and the breadth of the research is revealed in the many details of what was taking place in the political , social , religious and economic strata of American life during this tumultuous time. The weaving of these disparate elements into a cogent tapestry is a testament to Dr. Burton's scholarship. Dr. Burton's mastery of his voluminous research and his skill in writing a riveting narrative only enhances his standing as an American historian of the first order.

As Dr Burton shows the "original sin" of our founding fathers to face the question of slavery as a blot on the face of humanity in "The Declaration of Independence" and ""The Constitution" sowed the seeds that produced the bloody harvest of the Southern Rebellion. The evolution of President Lincoln's thinking of "The Emancipation Proclamation" as a strategic war maneuver to an act of basic humanity reflects Lincoln's antipathy towards slavery and his changing feelings on the equality of the races. While Lincoln was still evolving in his recognition of the equality of African Americans to the white's of America his legacy of the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments to the Constitution ultimately redeemed the promise of the founding fathers.

Dr. Burton's book illustrates that just as slavery's darkest shadow lays across the trinity of our most precious documents, the Declaration of Independence, The Constitution and the Bill of Rights Bill for almost a hundred years, the dark shadow of the Jim Crow era would eclipse the bright promise of Lincoln's legacy to mankind the 13th, 14th and15th amendment of the Constitution. Because of Lincoln's successors failures to stay the course with Reconstruction and the ultimate perversions of the Restoration and the Jim Crow era another hundred years of lynching, murder, degradation, economic slavery and forced migration faced African Americans most egregiously in the American south.
Dr. Burton's book also pounds the stake into the heart of the argument of the Civil War being fought over any thing but slavery. Over shadowing and intruding into all aspects of life during the arc of the age of Lincoln was slavery,slavery.slavery.

This book resonates with the passion that the American public had for public affairs during "The Age of Lincoln." This passion for the governance of their affairs was an on going concern not just a concern during the election cycles. This book could serve as a cautionary tale. The American public could do well to see past the "Roman Circus's" of sports , celebrity pap, unreal reality shows, egocentric pursuits of "me" and reevaluate some of the basic values so wisely enumerated in "The Age of Lincoln".

"The Age of Lincoln" is a very important book that would be a rewarding reading experience for anyone.

Insightful and Educational
By J. Morris
I just finished this book and really enjoyed it. In fact, I don't read history books all that often, but this book is very well written and easy to read. I expected to read about the differences between the North and the South, but I had never even thought about how the West fit into the picture. I expected to read about Civil War battles, but I liked the human interest side. I learned that Reconstruction formed an important part of America's history, and the sentiment of Reconstruction did not really end until the Supreme Court sanctioned segregation almost 30 years after the Civil War ended. Besides writing about the politics and culture of the times, the author put in interesting stories about different people. After finishing the book, I have great respect for Abraham Lincoln, and I found the idea that Lincoln was a Southerner both surprising and insightful. Lincoln is not the main character of the book, but his ideas had a huge impact on the coming of the Civil War, on the aftermath of war and how America developed. I recommend this book to anyone who an interest in history, scholars in academia, or those who are simply curious about the finest president of our country.

A Refreshing and Relevant Look
By crossofgold
The Age of Lincoln is a persuasive and unique interpretation of the events and ideas that reshaped the United States during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Focused around the life and ideas of Abraham Lincoln, there is also successful incorporation of a range of other influential characters such as John Brown, Preston Brooks, Andrew Johnson, Frank Baum, and William Jennings Bryan. The book discusses and advances central themes of race, religion, and liberty, and provides a convincing and fresh interpretation of the circumstances around the American Civil War.

The author does a good job of illustrating the contrast and tension of the age. He uses interesting examples to explore central contrasts of white vs. black, slave vs. free, south vs. north, rich vs. poor and uses those contrasts as a lens to understand many of the motivations and events of the period. Interestingly, much of the discussion of Lincoln's commitment to liberty that motivated him to wage the American Civil War eerily contrasts to the ideas of liberty and freedom advanced by another Republican president to justify a quite different war.

Overall, the book does an excellent job of relating the tensions and interests of the people in the ante bellum period, the events and struggles during the war, the reconstructive efforts afterwards, and it concludes persuasively by connecting these events to the rise of populism and the ascension of the corporation during the beginning of the 20th century. The Age of Lincoln is a refreshing and engaging interpretation of important historical events that remain relevant to this day.

A Glorious Defeat: Mexico and Its War with the United States, by Timothy J. Henderson

The war that was fought between the United States and Mexico from 1846 to 1848 was a major event in the history of both countries: it cost Mexico half of its national territory, opened western North America to U.S. expansion, and brought to the surface a host of tensions that led to devastating civil wars in both countries. Among generations of Latin Americans, it helped to cement the image of the United States as an arrogant, aggressive, and imperialist nation, poisoning relations between a young America and its southern neighbors.

In contrast to many current books, which treat the war as a fundamentally American experience, Timothy J. Henderson's A Glorious Defeat offers a fresh perspective by looking closely at the Mexican side of the equation. He examines the tremendous inequalities of Mexican society and provides a greater understanding of the intense factionalism and political paralysis leading up to and through the war. Also touching on a range of topics from culture and ethnicity to religion and geography, this comprehensive yet concise narrative humanizes the conflict and serves as the perfect introduction for new readers of Mexican history.

From Publishers Weekly
Henderson, on the faculty of Auburn University, offers a survey of the Mexican War from a Mexican perspective. Instead of the common depiction of Mexico as the victim of the U.S. and its racist Manifest Destiny, Henderson emphasizes Mexican agency in going to war, which reflected a profound sense of weakness. Mexico's revolutionary experience had produced a virulent factionalism based on divisions of race, class, region and ideology. The Texas revolt of 1836 only made it more clear that Mexico was too weak to populate, control and defend its northern territories, but that opinion was derided within Mexico. Instead, politicians of every stripe denounced the policies of their rivals. The only common denominator was that Texas must be reconquered, even if that meant war with overwhelmingly superior U.S. military and economic power. But the Mexican people remained largely indifferent—otherwise Winfield Scott's landing at Vera Cruz and his decisive march on Mexico City would have been impossible. Mexico, unable to pursue a pragmatic strategy of negotiation and compromise, suffered—and celebrated—a "glorious defeat" that further unraveled a disunited nation. 8 pages b&w photos not seen by PW. From Booklist
As a result of the 1846-48 war with Mexico, the U.S. absorbed considerable territory, but, as explored in clear prose in this absorbing account, the ramifications of that armed conflict stretched, for both countries, well beyond territorial loss and gain in terms of aggravating sectional disputes (centered on the spread of slavery) within the U.S and darkening the Mexican-American relationship for a long time to come. The special quality of Henderson's study is twofold: first, how carefully he explains the antecedents of the war itself; second is the expansiveness of his view, focusing equal time on the Mexican political currents that drew that country into an impossible war and the political currents in the U.S. that compelled it into an insistence that war must occur. An important aspect of this dual view of the conflict is Henderson's systematic but fascinating appraisal of why the war progressed badly for Mexico and successfully for the U.S. This unique contribution to the literature of the era is perfectly suitable to general readers. Review

"Lively, objective and highly accurate.” ―The Dallas Morning News

“Fascinating. This unique contribution to the literature of the era is perfectly suitable to general readers.” ―Brad Hooper, Booklist"

"This pithy, searching account of why Mexico went to war with the United States, knowing that to do so meant almost certain defeat, is sure to empower specialists and new readers of Mexican history alike. Equally important, the volume demonstrates the War's critical role as a catalyst in plunging both nations into bitter civil wars and poisoning future relations between them. Pulling few punches in his assessment of American power and hubris, Henderson contributes meaningfully to a future collaboration among neighbors based on greater understanding and mutual respect.” ―Gilbert M. Joseph, Farnam Professor of History and International Studies, Yale University

“A terrific book. In a concise and readable historical narrative, Henderson lays bare the causes for this war that reflects so much about the two countries and relations between them. His book is almost as much about the present as it is about the past.” ―Sam Quinones, journalist and author of True Tales From Another Mexico

Taut and concise narrative
By James V. Holton
This book is a great read on a topic that is too often ignored by Americans (North Americans, that is!)--the origins of US-Mexican relations. Packed into 191 pages, this book is concise without losing anything necessary to tell the story. Henderson zeroes in on the flip side of Manifest Destiny and discusses the impact of US expansionism on its southern neighbor. He does so without reducing the Mexicans to passive victims of US greed, but active agents in their own destiny...and their own defeat as it turns out. Henderson develops the main Mexican protagonist in this drama, Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, as a full-blooded and fatally flawed character in Mexican history. Stephen Austin and his role as Texas empressario and later Texas/US patriot is also fully discussed here.

The book is also a valuable contribution to the debate over immigration from Mexico, and the pervasive hostiliy that has affected it.

Casual readers of American history may be surprised by the less than flattering image of the Lone Star State during this time.

Military buffs beware--this book does not dwell on either the military strategy or tactics used in the war.

The crisis that led to the Mexican-American War.
By Kevin M Quigg
An excellent book about how the Mexican-American War took place. The author shows how the politics and evolution of both countries resulted in the war of 1846-1847. Mexico and her politicians knew they were going to lose the war, but because of stubborness and pride, they decided on the confrontation with the Americans. Polk pursued the expansion of the country out of a Manifest Destiny belief. Little of the writing is on the war itself, 95% of the book is the politics that brought about the war. I commend the author on going against the trend of writing about battles, and focusing instead on why both parties found themselves at war.

This is a nice informative read about the war. The author research his topic well and made it very readable. For those interested in this long forgotten war, this is a nice book.

Dr Henderson does it again!
By C. A. Temm
Dr Henderson as a history teacher at AUM (Auburn University at Montgomery AL)is the resident expert on South/Central America. As I read his book, most of it came across as very familiar. He had expounded these same thoughts in several of his classes taught at the University. I have had the fortune to take several of them and can assure readers, he is as good a teacher as he is a writer.

What Dr Henderson does is blow away some very old fables created by both sides. He highlights the simple fact that Santa Anna was not the only individual in Mexico who wanted, for whatever reason, a war with the US. A faction riven Mexico, so brillantly illustrated in detail in this book stumbled into a war for many reasons, not least of course was nationalism. Santa Anna simply rode the wave to power and managed to get killed thousands of Mexican conscripts in a war against a smaller tho much better led and equipped foe.

Another fable is the one of the well equipped/trained Mexican army...no one disputes the Mexican soldiers bravery, especially the US army of the time but no one talks about the quality of the Mexican forces themselves. American regulars far outmatched their opponents in every manner. American militia units also performed better than then Mexican opponents (of course the Americans were all volunteers) The American officers also were generally of better quality and only in the engineers were the Mexicans on par with their enemies. Equipment goes without saying, in every aspect the Americans had at least equal (cavalry wpns/infantry muskets) and in artillery, naval power, logestics-the Americans dominated their enemies.

American politicans too get their comeuppance, Polk is aptly labeled the chief instigator of the actual war. His goal of controlling Texas and northern Mexico was most likely one he had of doing peacefully, but he did not back down when the threat of bloodshed was poised.

Quite rightly, Dr Henderon stays on the political side of the war. The military aspects have been done to death and anyone with even a passing knowledge of the war knows it was an excellent example of a military campaign. For those wanting to know backgrounds of such an event, this book will both indulge and surprise you.

He also has several other books on Mexico including the Mexico Reader. They are all worth the time to find and read!

Best book I've seen on this topic
By A Customer
An excellent handbook for the Eucharistic Minister as well as for those involved in preparation of new EMs. Runs the gamut from historical roots to current questions, from spirituality to practicality. Outlines guidelines and suggested processes for selection as well as rites of commissioning. Sample certificate inside front cover. I've served for many years as a Eucharistic Minister, in large parishes in the US (4000 families) and small overseas parishes (30 families), and have been involved in training several groups of new volunteers. This is the best all-around source I've seen--good for basic training, reference, and renewal.

It is EMHC, not EM, and not EME
By all too common
This handbook should first of all teach the proper term, which is "Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion" (EMHC)
Only an ordained priest can be properly called a "Eucharistic Minister". Joseph is not a priest.

See the Vatican document "Redemptionis Sacramentum", sections 154, “the only minister who can confect the Sacrament of the Eucharist in persona Christi is a validly ordained Priest”. Hence the name “minister of the Eucharist” belongs properly to the Priest alone." See RS 156 for the proper title, and how the other mistaken titles are overreaching, including "EME".

THE STRUGGLE FOR BLACK EQUALITY (Chapter One)Up From Slavery

There is a difference in knowing you are black and in understanding what it means to be black in America. Before I was ten I knew what it was to step off the sidewalk to let a white man pass.

MARGARET WALKER

Nourished by anger, revolutions are born of hope. They are the offspring of belief and bitterness, of faith in the attainment of one’s goals and indignation at the limited rate and extent of change. Rarely in history are the two stirrings confluent in a sufficient force to generate an effective, radical social movement. They would be so in African America in the 1960s.

During the last decade of the nineteenth century, however, few African-Americans struggled hopefully. Many African-Americans resisted, often in subtle and solitary ways, at times in an organized and collective manner, transmitting from one generation to the next a tradition of black protest. But their initial efforts to continue the campaign against Jim Crow initiated by the black abolitionists failed to stem the rising crest of white racism after Reconstruction. Largely bereft of white allies, blacks fought on the defensive, trying to hold their limited gains. They lost each battle. Congress permitted the white South to reduce blacks to a state of peonage, to disregard their civil rights, and to disenfranchise them by force, intimidation, and statute. So did the Supreme Court. Writing into the Constitution its own beliefs in the inferiority of blacks, the late-nineteenth-century high court tightened every possible shackle confining the ex-slaves. Most American scholars cheered this legal counterrevolution which effectively nullified the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendments. It exemplified their teachings of inherent and irremediable racial differences, of blacks as the most primitive, degraded, and least civilized of the races, and of the folly of governmental tampering with local folkways. Whether appealing to scriptural or scientific evidence, to Darwinism, the gospel of Anglo-Saxonism, or the new interest in eugenics, a generation of clergymen, editors, and educators propounded the intellectual rationalizations for white supremacy.

Not surprisingly, most white Americans at the beginning of the twentieth century believed that, for the good of all, the naturally superior whites should rule over the baser races. They heard or read little to the contrary. The Southern Way had become the American Way. Even the most humanitarian reformers concerned with racial injustice counseled gradualism. Northern liberals preached the necessity of deferring citizenship for blacks until the freedmen were ready for it; they emphasized the long-term gains to be derived from education, religion, and economic uplift and denigrated strategies predicated on agitation, force, or political activity.

This total acquiescence by government officials and Northern public opinion gave the white South all the permission it needed to institutionalize its white-supremacist beliefs. First came disenfranchisement, accomplished in the 1880s mainly through fraud and force. All the Southern states felt emboldened in the next two decades to follow the lead of the 1890 Mississippi state constitutional convention in officially adopting such disenfranchising techniques as poll taxes, “grandfather clauses,” literacy and “good character” tests, and white primaries. Black voter registration plummeted 96 percent in Louisiana between 1896 and 1900. The number of African-Americans permitted to vote in the new century hovered around 3,500 in Alabama, which had an adult black population of nearly 300,000; and in Mississippi, with an even larger black population, fewer than a thousand blacks voted.

Political impotency bore on every aspect of African-American life. Unable to participate in the enactment or enforcement of the law, Southern blacks became increasingly vulnerable to physical assault and murder. Over a thousand were lynched between 1900 and 1915. No records exist to tally the number beaten or tortured. Nor can one describe adequately the terror of living with a constant fear of barbarity and violence, of having your security subject to the whim of those who despise you, of having no recourse to police or courts.

The Southern states, in addition, adopted a host of statutes methodically outlawing everything “interracial.” These new segregation laws expressed the white South’s all-encompassing belief in the inequality of blacks. Most Southern states now formally required Negroes and whites to be born separately in segregated hospitals; to live their lives as separately as possible in segregated schools, public accommodations, and places of work and recreation; and, presumably, to dwell in the next life separately in segregated funeral homes and cemeteries. The rapid proliferation of Jim Crow laws inspired an irrational competition among Southern legislators to erect ever more and higher barriers between the races. “White” and “Colored” signs sprouted everywhere and on everything. Atlanta mandated Jim Crow Bibles in its courtrooms and prohibited African-Americans and whites from using the same park facilities, even from visiting the municipal zoo at the same time. Alabama forbade African-Americans to play checkers with whites, and Mississippi insisted on Jim Crow taxicabs. New Orleans segregated its prostitutes, and Oklahoma, its telephone booths. The lawmakers of Florida and North Carolina saw to it that white students would never touch textbooks used by African-Americans. Such edicts bolstered white power and privilege while demeaning the spirit of African-Americans.

Jim Crow, furthermore, easily led to gross inequities in the distribution of public monies for education and civic services. The eleven Southern states in 1916 spent an average of $10.32 per white public-school student, and only $2.89 per black pupil. There was one hospital bed available for every 139 American whites in the 1920s, but only one for every 1,941 blacks. And that was not all. Southern governments victimized blacks by bestial convict-leasing and chain-gang practices, and confined them to serfdom on the lowest rung of the economic ladder, doing all they could to implement the view of James K. Vardaman, who became Governor of Mississippi in 1904, that “God Almighty had created the Negro for a menial.”

Alexis de Tocqueville’s observation early in the nineteenth century that white Americans “scarcely acknowledge the common features of humanity in this stranger whom slavery has brought among them” remained as accurate a century later.

And blacks could do little to alter the situation. More than 90 percent of the nearly ten million African-Americans in 1910 lived in the South, three-quarters of them in rural areas, the vast majority working a white man’s land, with a white man’s mule and a white man’s credit. Theirs was an oppressive, closed society, designed to thwart black advancement and encourage black subservience. All political and economic power remained vested in whites determined to maintain the status quo, however many black lives it cost. Daily facing grinding poverty, physical helplessness, and all the banal crudities of existence under an open, professed, and boasting racism, many blacks grew fatalistic. Segregation and discrimination came to seem permanent, immutable, an inevitable condition of life, and the majority of African-Americans succumbed to the new racial order.

But not all. Some protested by migrating. Between 1890 and 1910, nearly two hundred thousand Southern blacks fled to the North. Others returned to Africa or established autonomous black communities in the West. A few, mostly members of the tiny, Northern black elite, continued the struggle they had inherited from the black abolitionists and from the inspiring vision of equal rights nourished by the Civil War and Reconstruction. They spoke out for racial justice in such organizations as the Afro-American Council, Monroe Trotter’s National Equal Rights League, Ida B. Wells’s Antilynching League, and the Niagara Movement. Yet few blacks heard their pleas, and fewer whites heeded their demands. These small communities of resistance and struggle in the early twentieth century, lacking adequate finances, political leverage, influential white allies, access to the major institutions shaping public opinion and policy, and the support of large numbers of blacks, could do virtually nothing to alter the course of American life and thought. As Willie Brown lamented in his blues:

Can’t tell my future, I can’t tell my past.

Lord, it seems like every minute sure gon’ be my last.

Oh, a minute seems like hours, and hours seem like days.

And a minute seems like hours, hour seems like days.

The ascendancy of Booker T. Washington at the turn of the century epitomized both the widespread despair of blacks and the powerlessness of the handful of blacks actively fighting against racial injustice. Although he worked covertly to diminish disenfranchisement and Jim Crow, Washington publicly emphasized the necessity of accommodation, conciliation, and gradualism. “The best course to pursue in regard to civil rights,” he lectured to blacks, “is to let it alone; let it alone and it will settle itself.” When the British author H. G. Wells criticized Jim Crow while on a visit to the United States, Washington answered back: “The only answer to it is for colored men to be patient, to make themselves competent, to do good work, to give no occasion against us.” A spokesman for the emerging black middle class, he counseled all blacks to lift themselves up by their own bootstraps. Too few, however, even had boots, and in the years before his death in 1915, Washington’s nostrums failed abysmally to alleviate the plight of blacks.

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, organized in 1910, fared no better. Declaring its pur...

By David L. Bodary
Used in a history of the civil rights movement course, this book provides a solid introduction for students to the names, places and dates of many of the movements key moments. The book is easy to read organized into chapters chronologically surrounding key events including the bus boycott, student sit ins, and freedom riders.

Sitkoff writing includes enough context to allow the reader understand the movement from it earliest beginnings.

The Mirror of Infinite Beauty
By Laurie
First of all, what's a "bezel"? A bezel is the grooved interior of the setting on a ring which holds the precious stone in place: a feat of craftsmanship in the days of irregular jewels. Here it's a metaphor for the Prophets, each a unique receptacle for a unique precious stone: an aspect of Divine Wisdom revealed to one person, at one place and time.

The Qur`an has its own perspective on Prophets, different from Judaism or Christianity. Mankind perpetually strays from Divine Wisdom and God sends messengers to call us back. Thus a variety of Biblical figures are considered as Prophets: Adam, Enoch, Noah, Aaron, Jacob, Joseph, Job, John the Baptist and Jesus. There are also Arab Prophets not in the Bible: Sâlih, Hûd, Shu`aib.

Formless Divine Wisdom is Infinite, so this list of Qur`anic Prophets can only be a sample of Its limitless manifestations. But it's hard for us to realise how deeply traditional Muslims were imbued with the Qur`an: those who could read learnt to read from it; it was recited constantly; it was not uncommon to know the whole text by heart. For Ibn `Arabî, the succession of Prophets was a symbolic history of the world, and so although only a sample of God's Self-Revelations, they form a symbolically complete picture, a mandala.

From the beginning this text was singled out from Ibn `Arabî's enormous output: it was more widely studied, the subject of more commentaries, than any of his other works. It is one of his most difficult, yet accessible works. Difficult because... well, read a bit and see. Accessible because it comes closest to summing up his ideas. Westerners are often baffled when they first encounter a work like this. What exactly is it? Philosophy, poetry, theology, mysticism? Complex philosophical arguments in the Neo-Platonic tradition mingle harmoniously with Scriptural commentary, poetic and metaphorical language, and mystical paradoxes.

We are told at the start of the first chapter (about Adam) that God Knows Himself directly, but it is different to know oneself through Another, so God created the Universe to be His mirror. At first it was amorphous and rough [mirrors were made of metal in those days] but gradually it was polished until it could reflect Him. With the creation of human beings, self-conscious like God Himself, the Universe reached completion. Adam was the first Prophet, the first to receive Formless Wisdom in a unique form. The task of every human being is to know God, so that He may know Himself in us.

I have written at such length to try to give some idea of what this unique and wonderful book is, what you can expect to find in it. This is the most readable translation yet of a work that has for centuries been considered a marvel.

Buy the better translation!
By Ajab
The Fusus al-Hikaaam or more accurately the Wisdom of the Prophets, here as the Bezels of Wisdom is truly a very difficult text. Firstly this is like reading Hegel, often you do not understand what a passage means because Ibn 'l Arabi writes in esoteric terms. He himself admitted to having to be slightly difficult because of the concepts of which he was writing. Even if you distance this from Islam (although you need some basic knowledge on Islamic Philosophy to begin this book) you will realize it talks in depth about the spirit, mortality, purpose of Being, and of God.
Do not however buy this translation, as a Pakistani I have visited many institutions devoted to Ibn 'l Arabi. Many believe it is impossible to translate him, but when you do there are better English translations. There is one called the Wisdom of the Prophets by Taj Publishers/Suhail Academy. Then I believe that even this is better:http://www.amazon.com/Ringstones-Wisdom-Fusus-al-hikam-Islamic/dp/1567447244/ref=pd_sim_sbs_b_2?ie=UTF8&refRID=05K9HGT60GNXNEMK6FGE

Also for those seeking to understand Ibn Arabi, while he is not the best, in English I would stick to Chittick's commentaries. Ofcourse for those who understand Arabic there are much better commentaries available.

The best introduction to the Fusus
By Gogol
Ignore the 'sane side of Islam' review this book has nothing to do with modern current events and should not be used as some kind of "Well some of 'them' are ok, look this book is an example". This book was orignially written several hunderd years ago and its translation decades ago long before Bin Ladins, at a time even before Afghans were seen as 'noble mujahadin fighting evil communism' and Khomeni was probably still sitting in Paris drinking coffee when this book came out.

No, this is simply the traditional side of Islam practiced by the majority. Just because the media choses to focus on the cranks and madmen (who lets face it, sell newspapers) Does not mean that they are in any way a representation of Islam.

There seems to be a modern trend to remain blissfully ignorant of Islam (in spite of daily so called 'qualified' media reports on the Muslim world) while at the same time sprout hatred against it (See the lunatics who have 'reviewed' the book 'politically incorrect guide to Islam' for proof of that) then finally come across an accurate representation of Islam and then think they are qualified to say. "Well you know I read this one book so some of them must be ok, we just need to sepparate the good ones from the bad ones."

Regarding the book itself; translated from Arabic to French by Titus Burckhard a first rate translator, author of Fez, city of Islam and several other works on art and spirituality and student of the Darqawi Sufi order and translated from French to English by Angela Culme-Seymore. The edition I have is from Beshara publications which was set up by a Turkish scholar by the name of Bulent Rauf who has also translated the comentary on the Fusus by Ismail Hakki Bursevi (out of print but realy needs to be republished, come on Beshara sort it out!)

The translation is simple and easy to understand. The book itself covers the spiritual message that each prophet brought (for those who dont know and contary to popular belief Muslims believe in all of the Biblical Prophets) ending with the Prophet Muhammad. The book is not a full translation and from here it may be a good idea to go to the translation of Austin before going on to the Bulent Rauf translation. There is also a glossery of terms used in the text which also make this a lot easier to understand.

I should point out, Ismail Hakki Bursevi was a Turkish Sheikh of the Jelveti order, a prolific writer (one of his works is a 10 volume commentary on the Quran) and founder of the Hakkiyye Jelveti Sufi order. This should give some idea of the importance of the Bulent Rauf translation. You should refer to the Kernel of the Kernel to farmiliarise youreslf with Bursevi before reading the Fusus.

An exellent translation and an exellent introduction to ibn Arabi. I would also recomened Quest for the red sulpher and Sufis of Andalusia for a biography of ibn Arabi.
