Great information to help communicate with people of all ages.

This book has helped me learn to communicate with people more effectively by understanding myself better. As I read the book, it felt as if the author was writing directly about me. That's the sign of a truely good book.

Do you hear the Other? Does the Other hear you?

In this slim but rich & thoughtful volume, John Sanford delves into the problems of communication -- between spouses, between friends, between people in general. His approach is Jungian, but not in any doctrinaire or restrictive way. What he attempts to explain is how people, especially those who are close & intimate, can fail to communicate to one another, often by seeing/hearing what the other says through an unconscious filter that tells us what we want to hear, or think we ought to hear, rather than what the other person is actually saying. He also examines the ways in which we think we're saying one thing, but actually delivering a very different message on a subliminal level. In short, what ought to be the easiest thing in the world, speaking your thoughts & feelings to another human being, so that the other actually hears & understands what you mean, can be one of the most difficult things in the world.
As with all his books on human relationships, Sanford is a warm, humane guide to the deeper levels of the psyche, Never overbearing, never dogmatic, his goal is always the furthering of understanding & self-illumination. In these pages he succeeds admirably, encouraging his readers to stop & consider not only what they're saying, but how they're saying it & what it is they really mean to say -- most highly recommended!

WOW

If everyone read this book and took it seriously, we'd have a lot less misunderstanding in this world. At each point made by the author I found myself saying YES!! Actually, I purchased this as a used book, and I could immed see that it had made a major impact on the previous reader as well, judging from the many highlighted and underlined sections. I added many more highlights and notes and plan to keep this book for frequent re-reading. I own a number of the author's other books as well and am struck by how knowledgeable he is on a variety of subjects.
