From Publishers Weekly
Noted environmentalist Sale ( Dwellers in the Land ) here offers a brief but effective survey of American environmentalism. He cites Rachel Carson's 1962 Silent Spring as the spur to the modern environmental movement, then describes four periods of activism. During the "protest generation" years from 1962 to Earth Day in 1970, environmentalists focused on preserving nature for the preservation of man. During the 1970s, the "doomsday decade," environmental groups formed a professionalized Washington power center, leading to much federal legislation. During "the Reagan reaction" years from 1980 to 1988, Sale argues, the United States ignored the growing environmental peril, cutting regulatory agencies, while veteran environmental groups became cautious insiders, prompting the growth of grassroots and radical activism. Though environmentalism has spread in the fourth, post-Reagan period, Sale warns that the earth is still in great danger. He suggests that environmentalists can continue to operate as a reformist citizens' lobby--though he doesn't cite a hierarchy of priorities, which would be useful--or they can address the much tougher question of our society's fundamental priorities.

From Library Journal
Sale ( The Conquest of Paradise: Christopher Columbus and the Columbian Legacy , LJ 10/15/90) briefly surveys the rapid growth of the American environmental crusade. As a participant in the Green Movement, Sale knows of what he writes. Citing the 1962 publication of Rachel Carson's Silent Spring as the impetus to the movement, he divides the next 30 years into four periods: Sixties Seedtime, 1962-70; Doomsday Decade, 1970-80; The Reagan Reaction, 1980-88; and Endangered Earth, 1988-92. Organizations, legislation, events, and personalities comprise this story of a movement that has altered American consciousness and forever changed the way we live. It is a high drama of successes, failures, and unmet challenges, all presented in a lively, readable style. Recommended for lay readers.

Review

“A book we've been waiting for without knowing it. This short but astute history chronicles the remarkable growth of the American environmental movement. In so doing, it yields some cautious hope that we're well started on the most profound--and most perilous--journey of our history.” ―Bill McKibben

“The Green Revolution is at once a history and a critique of modern environmentalism. It is a virtual primer on current environmental politics. Like all of Sale's books, it is impassioned in its advocacy and provocative in its analysis.” ―Richard White, University of Washington

“The Green Revolution is a fine, well-balanced, concise, up-to-date history of modern environmentalism. It fills a great gap and should be widely used in schools and colleges.” ―George Sessions, Sierra College

“I doubt that any 108 pages in the English language come close to educating the reader about the environment--its despoilers and its defenders--as well as Kirkpatrick Sale's small volume. The Green Revolution is a tour de force. It is a brief but comprehensive, analytical but readable, insightful, factual, current but historical and futuristic.” ―Ralph Nader

Good intro to the American environmental movement
By K Scheffler
Anyone who wants to get a better understanding of the evolution of the Green movement in the United States will find this short, concise book a worthwile read. The book covers the first three decades of the movement, which essentially began when Rachel Carson published Silent Spring in 1962. Environmentalism really established itself quickly after the publication of this book; the threats that Carson discussed struck a nerve with the American people. This growing concern led to the establishment of a number of organizations like the Sierra Club and Greenpeace, as well as forcing politicians to start paying attention to environmental issues. But as Sale points out, the environmental movement has experienced numerous setbacks. First off, the political establishment has persisted in its resistance to legislating truly effective environmental policies. Second, there has been a considerable backlash from big business. Thirdly, many of the idealistic organizations of the 1960s and 1970s have essentially sold out in their effort to play hardball with the big boys, thus diluting the revolutionary aspect of environmentalism and, hence, giving rise to "radical" environmentalists. All in all, this is a good book, very well and clearly written and bountiful in relevant information for those wanting a better understanding of the environmental movement in the United States.

Adequate
By Nathan Carlton
While Sale demonstrates a sound background on the subject, the book reads more like a rough draft. The chapters are divided into seperate periods within the environmental movement but the events within each chapter are not presented in chronological order. Sale tends to jump back and forth between events which makes it somewhat difficult to bring the entire picture together. In short the information is fairly complete but rather disjointed in its presentation. This is a bit disappointing for a book whose purpose is specifically to present a historical overview of the era. All things considered, for a few more pages there are other books on the subject that are much better.

Good Condition??
By Alexander
I ordered this book for one of my college classes and in all honesty this is the only book that was in the worse condition. Before I ordered this book, the condition stated that it was good. Now if other people consider good as water damaged, stained, and smelly then please ignore this review. Overall, I personally was not pleased with this purchase.

The incendiary image of the title refers to letters too painful to contemplate for long. Burn This is about the pain of loss, the pain of love, and the cost in pain to be a great artist. It is both larger in implication and more personal than previous plays by Wilson. Yet it is also typical, in that it is about a tightly knit family-like group into which an outsider comes. The center of the play is Anna, a dancer, whose partner has died accidently, who must grieve and get on with her art. The catalyst character is the dead man's brother, Pale, a wild man in his passionate grief, and the center of cyclonic emotions for Anna and her friends. Anna creates an important ballet out of her agony, and Pale brings her to love. Searing. Thomas E. Luddy, Salem State Coll., Mass.

The Fate of Their Country: Politicians, Slavery Extension, and the Coming of the Civil War, by Michael F. Holt

How partisan politics lead to the Civil War

What brought about the Civil War? Leading historian Michael F. Holt convincingly offers a disturbingly contemporary answer: partisan politics. In this brilliant and succinct book, Holt distills a lifetime of scholarship to demonstrate that secession and war did not arise from two irreconcilable economies any more than from moral objections to slavery. Short-sighted politicians were to blame. Rarely looking beyond the next election, the two dominant political parties used the emotionally charged and largely chimerical issue of slavery's extension westward to pursue reelection and settle political scores, all the while inexorably dragging the nation towards disunion.

Despite the majority opinion (held in both the North and South) that slavery could never flourish in the areas that sparked the most contention from 1845 to 1861-the Mexican Cession, Oregon, and Kansas-politicians in Washington, especially members of Congress, realized the partisan value of the issue and acted on short-term political calculations with minimal regard for sectional comity. War was the result.

Including select speeches by Lincoln and others, The Fate of Their Country openly challenges us to rethink a seminal moment in America's history.

From Publishers Weekly
University of Virginia historian Holt (The Rise and Fall of the American Whig Party) provides an elegant, brief analysis of the partisan political forces that, via the great debate over the extension of slavery into the American West, eventually plunged the United States into civil war. Holt discounts the view that the war arose inevitably from two irreconcilable economies as well as the more naïve interpretation that it derived from righteous Northern outrage over slavery. Instead he argues that shortsighted and self-absorbed politicians from both the South and the North (their agendas focused, for the most part, on simple re-election) needlessly exploited the slavery-extension debate and escalated the associated rhetoric to a crescendo that finally made disunion inevitable. Holt provides brilliant thumbnail portraits of such key players as Abraham Lincoln, John C. Calhoun, Henry Clay, James K. Polk, Daniel Webster and Stephen A. Douglas. He also offers vitally lucid analyses of such key legislative issues as the Wilmot Proviso, the Compromise of 1850 and the Kansas-Nebraska Act. Stating his case in a nutshell, Holt writes, "At few other times in American history did policy makers' decisions have such a profound—and calamitous—effect on the nation as they did in the 1840s and 1850s." 8 pages of b&w illus. not seen by PW; map.

Review

“Michael Holt's fascinating study of partisan politics and the territorial slavery issue shows again why he is one of America's finest pre-civil war historians.” ―William W. Freehling, author of The South vs. The South: How Anti-Confederate Southerners Shaped the Course of the Civil War

“Michael Holt has distilled a lifetime of scholarship in this impressive account of America's greatest political crisis. There is no better introduction to the intricate yet explosive politics of the 1850s.” ―Harry Watson, author of Liberty and Power: The Politics of Jacksonian America

“Michael Holt has written a superb account of the nation's decent into Civil War. A skilled political historian, he focuses on the decisions that political leaders made, their arousal of the most divisive passions, and their loss of control of a system present in American life.” ―Joel H. Silbey, author of Martin Van Buren and the Emergence of American Popular Politics

A Story of Politicians and the Affect of their Actions
By David Southworth
This short book by Michael Holt is the story of politics in America leading up to the Civil War. On the one hand, Holt makes a convincing argument that political leaders between 1820 and 1860 often acted out of raw political ambition rather than what was best for the country. In calculating the risk of taking certain actions Democrats, Whigs, and nascent Republicans took into account how their decisions would most affect their own political fortunes.

While principle sometimes played a part, this can be seen in Calhoun's staunch support for slavery no matter what and Republican's anti-Southern stance in 1858 and 1680, in too many instances all that mattered was how issues can be leveraged to gain the most support for you in the next election.

This is not a new idea in Civil War histories, but Holt makes an impressive case for it in just over 100 pages. The other theses of the book, the danger of sectionalism and the need to compromise, are also portrayed well. However, it is the danger of putting one's personal interests above the national that is the main lesson of this book. I don't believe another civil war is in any way imminent, but it would be wonderful if today's politicians would relearn that lesson. This book would be a great place for them to start.

A young Historians outlook...
By J. Gard
Michael F. Holt makes a great argument on past historical events leading up to the Civil War. He states clearly in the preface that he is writing this book to reach a wider audience. (And from the other reviews I can see he did!)

It is a resource book containing thoughts he previously used in his books on the Whigs and the 1850's, but if you're an American History teacher or professor this book could be used in the classroom. It is a great addition to my library and would easily work in an academic setting to hit on all the major "coming of events" before the War.

The only probably I have with this book is that Mr. Holt portrays John C. Calhoun as a radical. While me might have been in the 1830's by the Mexican War and the Compromise of 1850 Calhoun predicted the future of our Country and in his address to Congress in 1850 urged for compromise over disunion.

I still would recommend this book to anyone who wanted some straight answers to the Antibellum period of United States history.

Excellent introduction to a misunderstood topic
By Thomas Woods
In The Fate of Their Country, Professor Holt skillfully and helpfully clarifies the vexed question of slavery extension, a controversy that played an important role in dividing North and South and setting the stage for war.

This is a relatively short book, and for a reason: Professor Holt wishes to acquaint a larger audience with some of the important issues that he has covered at greater length in some of his other work. Hence this accessible introduction.

What I find so interesting about the book is that it shows rather convincingly that debates over slavery extension were often not about slavery per se. The question of extending slavery into the territories became an issue of Southern honor: whether or not Southerners actually wanted to bring slaves into, say, New Mexico Territory (none were there by 1860), the issue became a matter of principle between sections of the country that had been so often at odds in the past.

The insistence upon slavery's extension into the territories was often a matter of saving face for the South rather than (necessarily) a matter of actually desiring to bring slaves there, particularly since neither North nor South seriously expected slavery to take root in most of the places over which they argued at such length.

Moreover, the subject of slavery extension came to symbolize all the differences between North and South, including controversies over the tariff, a homestead bill, internal improvement legislation, and the like.

Professor Holt is certainly not saying that slavery played no role whatever in the coming of the Civil War. But the issue has often been misunderstood, and it is Holt's aim to provide the reader with the evidence and the historical background he needs to understand the context in which slavery extension was debated. He concludes that irresponsible politicians, for their own narrow partisan advantage, all too often exploited the issue for demagogic purposes, with (ultimately) tragic consequences. A superb book.

Symeon the New Theologian: The Discourses (Classics of Western Spirituality (Paperback)), by C J De Catanzaro, Symeon

Father George Maloney in his introduction to this volume focuses directly on the special importance of St. Symeon and on how similar the religious situation of his era is to our own. "Concretely, the battle of two opposing views of theology centered around St. Symeon and his mystical apophatic approach of the experiencing of God immanently present to the individual, as opposed to the "head trip" scholastic theology as represented by Archbishop Stephen of Nicomedia, the official theologian at the court of Constantinople. Stephen represented the abstract, philosophical type of theologizing while Symeon strove to restore theology to its pristine mystical tendency as a wisdom infused by the Holy Spirit into the Christian after he had been thoroughly purified through a rigorous asceticism and a state of constant repentance."

This great spiritual master of Eastern Christianity was an abbot, spiritual director of renown, theologian and important church reformer. These Discourses which form the central work of his life were preached by St. Symeon to his monks during their morning Matins ritual. They treat such basic spiritual themes as repentance, detachment, renunciation, the works of charity, impassiblity, remembrance of death, sorrow for sins, the practice of God's commandments, mystical union with the indwelling Trinity, faith and contemplation.

Great Byzantine mystic
By Greg
This edition of Symeon's works is a pleasing addition to the excellent Classics of Western Spirituality series.

Symeon was a Byzantine monk who experienced the 'Divine Light' of God. In Eastern Orthodox Christianity, many saints and mystics emphasize what is called the 'hesychast' approach to God which enables the mystic to experience God's 'energies', that is, how his essence manifests itself to created beings and the world. The experience is characterised by an overwhelming divine light which blinds the 'eyes of the soul' yet is also a personal, loving prescence. Symeon argued this experience was possible for all baptized Christians, not just monks.

Symeon was somewhat radical and some of his ideas included the monk being able to forgive sins (a function usually practiced by the priesthood). This got Symeon into some trouble with the Archbiship, an experience which is quite common for mystics of many religions. However, Symeon is fairly biblical in his spirituality, very frequently quoting the Gospels and the letters of Paul.

This work sheds much light on the Eastern branch of Christianity and its beautiful spirituality.

An American View of an Eastern Saint
By T. Polk
When I first encountered this book, I was an American Anglican, raised a southern Baptist. As such, I did not begin to appreciate Symeon's Discourses until well into this book. By the time I finished it, I was talking to other people about how much contemporary American Christians have to learn from this dedicated abbot from tenth and early eleventh century Constantinople. The Discourses are valuable reading for American Christians who want to deepen their concept of discipleship.

Symeon the New Theologian is highly respected in the Orthodox Church. However, his name will be unfamiliar to many western Christians. Only in the past decades, translators and publishers have made his writings accessible to the English speaing public. In 1980, Paulist Press published this English translation from Symeon's Greek, together with an extensive introduction by George Maloney S.J. and preface by Basile Krivocheine. The translation by C.J. deCatanzaro is in eloquent, fiery English that is a pleasure to read.

What initially bothered me about Symeon is the same thing that I eventually realized makes his work beneficial. He seemed to have read only that part of the Bible that contemporary American Christians avoid. Specifically, he wrote extensively on the subject of repentence. If there is a passage anywhere in the Bible about repentance, Symeon found it. He was also zealous about the Holy Spirit. However, he did not write much about grace.

It finally occurred to me that Symeon was writing from an extreme in the theological spectrum from the past 2,000 years of church history, while contemporary Americans are living at the opposite end of that spectrum. There is much that we can learn from Symeon to balance our all too extremist "easy believism."

The importance of the Discourses began to sink in while I read Discourse Number IX "On Works of Mercy." I thought about my own financial excesses while reading that God counts our possessions as our own , "entrusted to us by God for the benefit of our fellow servants" so that we are "scattering them abroad generously with joy and magnanimity, not reluctantly or under compulsion." (Section 7). This is followed by typically eloquent writing of this deeply zealous man in Section 10, illustrative of his lessons on repentence: "Repentance gives rise to the tear from the depths of the soul; the tear cleanses the heart and wipes away great sins. When these have been blotted out through tears the soul finds itself in the comfort of the Spirit of God and is watered by streams of sweetest compunction. By these it is spiritually fructified day by day so that it produces the fruits of the Spirit (Gal 5:22f.) and in due time yields them like an abundant harvest of grain as an unfailing supply of food for the incorruptible and eternal life of the soul." (Section 10). The day after I read that, I listened as a well known Evangelical radio minister spoke about the loss of emphasis on repentance in the contemporary church. I then began to appreciate Symeon on a new level.

I highly recommend that readers unfamiliar with Symeon read the introduction and preface before venturing into his text. His life is a wonderful lesson on leadership and perseverance.

As a young man, Symeon worked in Constantinople, managing the household of a patrician and possibly even working as a diplomat, perhaps serving in the palaces of the wealthy eastern city. He was the son of provincial nobility, described as a physically beautiful man. His familiarity with the splendid wealth of the culture are evident in some of his writing, such as Discourse XI, section 6. There, he compares feasting on the Word of God with attending a "sumptuous banquet" where the guests were encouraged to eat their fill from " and to take food home to share with their friends or the poor the following day.

While working in the secular world, he went home every evening and spent a long time in prayer. At the age of 27, after a 13 year wait, Symeon entered the Stoudion Monastery of Constantinople, a cooly formalistic intellectual community that he had wanted because his spiritual advisor was there. There was one major problem with that: Symeon's hot zeal did not fit in. His experience of Christianity was one of personal, intense worship. His faith was one drawn from the Bible and the early church fathers. It was not an intellectual endeavor. Symeon was immediately rejected. He was asked to leave after the first few months. Symeon spent most of his life reforming a decadent monastery and developing his discourses. A new generation of monks then rejected his asceticism. He spent the last years of his life editing his writings with the help of one of his disciples.

Despite the rejection, in retrospect, Symeon may have been the most important theologian of the tenth century whose writing still survives. Together with Gerbert of Aurillac (Pope Sylvest II) and St. Anselm in the west, his writing gives a rare glimpse into the spiritual and intellectual life of a few lights that shown at the turn of the last millineum. This author whose culture was so vastly different from our own, and whose church was far removed from the contemporary church, deserves a careful reading to balance what is missing from our faith.

Life Changing!!!!!!!
By Joshua the Sage
Symeon has a way with words and speaks with such simplicity and clarity. Who spoke in a humble way but wasn't one to hold back the truth of things the way they are either. Thank the Lord for this Saint and his writings which were left to us. This book has many different small messages which all fit together as a whole. You can either read the chapters in order or not and a great book to use as a reference book in future studies.

The Long, Bitter Trail: Andrew Jackson and the Indians (Hill and Wang Critical Issues), by Anthony F. C. Wallace

The Hill and Wang Critical Issues Series: concise, affordable works on pivotal topics in American history, society, and politics.

This account of Congress's Indian Removal Act of 1830 focuses on the plight of the Indians of the Southeast--Cherokees, Creeks, Choctaws, Chickasaws, and Seminoles--who were forced to leave their ancestral lands and relocate to what is now the state of Oklahoma. Revealing Andrew Jackson's central role in the government's policies, Wallace examines the racist attitudes toward Native Americans that led to their removal and, ultimately, their tragic fate.

From Publishers Weekly
Wallace, who won a Bancroft Prize in 1978 for Rockdale: The Growth of an American Village , turns to Native American history in this retelling of the story of the Trail of Tears. This refers to the forced removal in the 1830s of thousands of Indians, particularly the Cherokee and the Choctaw, from the American east to west of the Mississippi River. The author expands his focus to examine the relocation of numerous Indian groups. Central to the story is Andrew Jackson, who assumed the presidency confronted with a government divided over the question of Indian removal and who soon became one of its major proponents. Responses of the Natives ranged from legal action and ultimate resignation on the part of some to warfare on the part of the Seminole. In a concluding chapter, Wallace shows how the effects of removal continue to the present day. All of this is told in a straightforward manner. Although he points to certain well-known white historians who give short shrift to this history, he overstates the uniqueness of his study. While it is a good introduction to the topic, this volume is far from the only modern historical treatment. Two documentary appendixes will be helpful to readers new to the subject.

From School Library Journal
YA-The Indian Removal Act of 1830 summarily dismissed the rights of Native Americans to their homelands east of the Mississippi and mandated their relocation to the wilds of the Oklahoma plains. The infamous Trail of Tears is indeed a riveting tale of political expediency, greed, and sorrow. In this book, Wallace recounts in a balanced and clear manner the influences that gave rise to a governmental policy that regulated the disenfranchisement of Native peoples within American boundaries. The author carefully traces the movement and activities of the Cherokees, Creeks, Choctaws, Chickasaws, and Seminoles through the Trail of Tears to their eventual destinations and fortunes. While almost scholarly in tone, the calm and precise narrative remains arresting because of the strength of its subject matter.

From Library Journal
The Indians, not Jackson, are the chief focus of this excellent account of the five "civilized tribes" being forced west with the Indian Removal Act of 1830. Wallace succinctly traces the evolution of the government's Indian policies from colonial days to this removal. It was Jackson's actions--or lack of them--that forced the westward migration. Wallace paints an uncomplimentary picture of a man driven by politics, land hunger, and profit who justified his ambitions as a desire to save the Indians from extinction. Wallace's work compares favorably with Ronald N. Satz's critical study, American Indian Policy in the Jacksonian Era (1975), and contrasts sharply with Francis Paul Prucha's favorable treatment in The Great Father: The United States and the American Indian (Univ. of Nebraska Pr. , 1984. 2 vols). This sobering study is essential for people wanting a terse description of the Indians' trek over the "Long, Bitter Trail."-- Richard Hedlund, Ashland Community Coll., Ky.

A perceptive introduction to Jacksonian Indian policy
By MarkK
Few events in American history are as shameful as the removal of the Indians from the American Southeast in the 1830s. Despite prior treaties and remarkable success in assimilating American culture, the tribes in the region - Cherokees, Creeks, Choctaws, Chickasaws, and Seminoles - were driven west by the voracious demand of Americans for land. In this book, Anthony Wallace provides a survey of the development of federal policy towards the tribes in the early 19th century and its impact upon them.

For much of the early 19th century, Indian policy was mired in a conflict between people advocating Indian "reform" (who saw Indians as capable of being taught the ways of white civilization) and proponents of a policy of removing Indians from land slated for settlement. The election of Andrew Jackson to the presidency in 1828 decided this conflict. A westerner with a reputation as an Indian fighter, Jackson sided with removal advocates, endorsing a bill that made removal to lands west of the Mississippi River federal policy.

Though supporters of removal argued that the policy was necessary given the unredeemable savagery of the Indians, as Wallace points out, the success of the tribes in the region undermined this justification. More dependent on agriculture than other tribes, the Indians of the Southeast had an easier time adapting to American cultural standards than their counterparts in other regions, with some tribal members even owning slaves. This didn't save them from removal however, and the Cherokees discovered just how hollow the promise of assimilation was when Jackson ignored a Supreme Court ruling that rejected Georgia's claim of state sovereignty over the Indians, thus depriving the tribes of the only hope of protection from expulsion. The result was the "Trail of Tears," the forced migration to Indian Territory that resulted in the deaths of thousands of Indians.

Wallace provides a summary of Jackson's Indian policy that is both balanced and readable. His coverage of white attitudes, which runs across the spectrum from the hostility of settlers to the sympathy of white missionaries, is refreshingly nuanced. His coverage of the Indians is equally good, and he pulls no punches in demonstrating the extent to which the tribal leadership was complicit in removal. Readers seeking to learn more about the "Trail of Tears" and the policies that brought it about would do well to start with this book.

A Book for Anyone
By Caroline Blanchard
An Indian activist or just an amature historian, everyone should read this book. Though short, it gives an excellent narrative of the removal of Indians and their trama from the East by the American government. This book is amazingly well written and is for both students (like myself who read it in a class) or for casual readers. Please concider this book to find out more about the emerging stories of what really happened to Native Americans.

Excellent, excellent, excellent
By J. Hart
Simply the best work available on Indian Removal, in my opinion. It is highly regarded among academic historians. Wallace did a tremendous job of writing clearly and making the plight of the Indians understandable to anyone. It is short, it is lucid, it is interesting reading. Plus, it is balanced. This is not a work that treats Indians as childlike, passive victims, but it does convey the injustice and unnecessary hardships to which they were subjected. It also does not portray the government and non-Indian Americans simply as aggressors. It's an important work for understanding what happened to the tribes. It won't take a lot of your time, so do yourself a favor and read it.

Duke Hamilton Is Dead!: A Story of Aristocratic Life and Death in Stuart Britain, by Victor Stater

Politics and society in an aristocratic world--as seen in the dramatic story of a notorious duel.

On the morning of November 15, 1712, two of Britain's most important peers, the fourth Baron Mohun and the fourth Duke of Hamilton, met in Hyde Park. In a flurry of brutal swordplay that lasted perhaps two minutes, both fell mortally wounded. For months afterward, the kingdom was in a uproar, for the duel had occurred at a moment of grave political crisis. Whigs and Tories, increasingly desperate over the future as Queen Anne neared death, hurled charges of political murder and treasonous plotting against one another. Charge and countercharge filled the press as the social and moral crises mounted.

Using the famous Mohun-Hamilton duel as a focal point, Victor Stater re-creates the desperate aristocratic world of late-seventeenth- and early-eighteenth-century Britain. Mohun and Hamilton stood at opposite ends of a bitterly divided political spectrum, but politics was not the only cause of their quarrel. A decade-long battle over a disputed inheritance was a crucial element, and Stater shows how, amid the luxury and ostentation of the aristocratic lifestyle, something very like moral anarchy reigned. The result is a stunning narrative of life and death in a tumultuous time, an era in which incivility and moral turpitude ruled beneath a thin veneer of aristocratic manners.

From Kirkus Reviews
In a vividly evocative account, Stater (History/Louisiana State Univ.) weaves social and political history into a plot that reads like a Restoration-era episode of Dallas. By the late 17th century the British nobilitys reliance on land-based wealth made them poorer than the new mercantile classes of the emerging British Empire, which compelled many lords to incur ruinous debts to maintain their grand lifestyles. Against this economic backdrop, Stater draws a picture of ubiquitous immorality and violence, typified by the nasty and brutish lives of two men: Charles, the fourth Baron Mohun (16771712), and James, Duke of Hamilton (16581712). Though a prodigious worker in matters of state, Mohun, who was eventually tried for murder twice by the House of Lords, spent most of his life tippling, brawling, and whoring. Hamilton, a Scottish peer who championed Scottish independence, landed twice in the Tower of London for his connections to the Catholic Stuarts and played a deceitful double game for years with the court of the exiled Catholic pretender that amounted to treason. Stater focuses on one particularly fateful piece of intrigue, the bitter decade-long legal battle between Mohun and Hamilton over title to Gawsworth, a valuable English country estate, which had been obtained by Mohun through a monstrous pattern of fraud and perjury, and which Hamilton claimed through his marriage of convenience. The machinations of a rapist and profligate, George MacCartney, whose appointment as governor of Jamaica was blocked by Hamilton, exacerbated the tensions between the two men. In 1712, the Gawsworth lawsuits and the two lords' deepening political enmityMohun and fellow Whigs like the Duke of Marlborough feared that Hamilton's suspected connections with the pretender could result in Catholic restorationled to a mutually fatal encounter on Hyde Park's dueling ground. A vivid, if often ugly, snapshot of a social class under siege in a time of tumultuous change. Well researched and thoughtful. (b&w photos, not seen) -- Copyright ©1998, Kirkus Associates, LP. Review
...it will delight Anglophiles who can never get enough dowager duchesses and Knights of the Thistle. -- The New York Times Book Review, Carol Peace Robins

Mr. Stater ... provid[es] an interesting and informative study of a period when changing social and financial patterns made politics a truly dangerous game. The story includes much anecdote, savage journalism, and characters ranging from a polished Irish scalawag to Peter the Great. -- The Atlantic Monthly, Phoebe-Lou Adams

Politics are for the Rich
By P A Brown
Victor Stater, the author of "Duke Hamilton is Dead," writes with a peppy affection for his subject, which is ostensibly, the legal calumnies of two peers of the realm, fighting it out over a hefty inheritence. But Mr. Stater goes beyond the legal intricacies by throwing in a wealth of rich social and anecedotal material about a period in British history that has always seemed a bit tame -- the later years of the Stuart dynasty. With merry Charles II gone, and his Catholic brother James II forced off the throne, the late 17th and early 18th century Britons were ruled by the rather dull William and Mary, and then Mary's unfortunate sister Anne (who bore over a dozen children, only one of whom survived, and that one, a severally handicapped child, died at 11). Mr. Stater makes this era come alive through the framework of the contentiousness of the Earl of Mohun and the Duke of Hamilton, both striving for political power, both intriguers and both dead set on paying for their political ambitions with a disputed inheritence. All in all, a lively look at the period with a wealth of juicy details. But the foremost lesson to be learned here is that, whether it be 1700 or 2000, politics is still a game reserved for the very wealthy.

Great mix of social and political history
By Tripp Ritter
This is a great story of a decades long feud that spans (and influences) events such as the Golden Revolution, the Union of Scotland and England and the Restoration. Using the conflict between Baron Mohun and Duke Hamilton as a base, the author explores the changing nature of the aristocratic lifestyle and the British social stucture. The political infighting between Tories and Whigs in the larger international context was particularly fascinating. While the narrative flow is generally solid, I was lost for a bit in the second chapter that covers the history of a property at the center of the feud. In addition, the numerous names an aristocrat could use made for some confusion. That being said, the book is overall readable and quite entertaining.
