Good refrence material spoiled by personal and ignorant opinions

I found this used in hardcover and it has a lot of information. Take it as a starting point when investigating the stars listed but do not take this man's opinion as fact. I nearly chucked the book in the fire when I read about Abbott and Costello "Buffs and critics never found them funny nor, today, do TV-viewers." When this book was released tv viewers were very much attached to their old films airing on television, tons of Buffs loved them and while I can't fully speak of every sourpuss anti-comedy critic out there, I find this statement to be basically his disdain for the team. He is halfway critical of Laurel & Hardy in a negative fashion as well and all throughout the book we see him dogging some very good films and actors. There are many greats left out, when he had a listing for Bebe Daniels and mentions Rio Rita's earning I expected him to at least mention Wheeler & Woolsey there as they were a vital part of that films earnings and two other Bebe talkies and continued on further to success in talkies but he didn't. I wonder if he even watched the movie. They deserved their own listing, so did Charley Chase, Joe E Brown, the Three Stooges, Little Rascals, Mabel Normand and tons of others. This being said the book is 576 pages long, some people I guess had to be left out and these are the type of people the author is truly uneducated about.

The Great Movie Stars

I have always enjoyed this book, but I feel Mr Shipman could have done a similar book on Silent Stars. Unfortunately, like too many authors he despises the thing that he says he admires. The silent era is crying out for a similar detailed account of the actors who made the film industry what it is today. Another criticism is that there are too many personal opinions which sometimes border on snobbery. It is wrong to judge stars of the twenties and thirties with the attitudes of today. The film star industry started with Florence Lawrence and so should all books on films.

An excellent guide to the stars that made the cinema golden.

Mr. Shipman has put together the definitive guide to the stars that made their mark before WW II. From Abbott and Costello to Roland Young this book covers most of the major stars. If you buy only one reference book on vintage Hollywood's greatest make it this one. You won't be sorry
