The title is _The Wolf Children_. The author is Charles Maclean. The book seems to be out of print.
This is the story of Amala and Kamala, the two girls raised by a she-wolf in northeastern India, until they were reclaimed by humanity through the efforts of a remarkable Anglican missionary, Joseph Amrito lal Singh, who was also a native Indian, and his equally remarkable Indian wife, who struggled to run an orphanage in northeastern India, and whose diaries can now be found on the Internet. The book is a well researched and well written summary of the facts available to, and discovered by, the author in the 1970s, but could still be the best book on the subject for the general reader. He does not present all of his research in detail, but summarizes it all in narrative form, as he explains, to make it more readable. The last fourth of the book concerns how the story came to the attention of the world. There was always a lot of scientific concern about the truth of it, and the author clearly understands why: it is simply a nearly incredible story. Nevertheless, through an apparently thorough and careful investigation, he managed to satisfy his own skeptical mind that it was true. What we will never know, and can only imagine, is the exact nature of the life of the two girls with the wolves -- and inevitably as wolves themselves, insofar as such a life was possible for human children.
Postscript. A Wikipedia article on this subject summarizes a 2007 book in French by Serge Aroles, according to which the whole story is a hoax used to raise money for the orphange; but the article does not mention this book among its sources. Anything dedunking the story would have to mention this book by Maclean, it seems to me, since Maclean claims to have carefully researched it. The Wikipedia article states that, when they were found, the Kamala was about 8 years old and Amala about 18 months old. This is incompatible with an alleged photograph of them from that time, in which the younger one, Amala, appears to be much older than 18 motnhs. If the events were to happen now rather than when they did, they would be thoroughly investigated and the truth would likely come out. But at this distance in time, it seems to be impossible to know the truth. Singh's original story contains elements clearly fantastical, not merely extraordinary; but these elements might be explained by his embellishing an otherwise true story. The mere fact that he saw an opportunity to raise money for the orphanage and tried to take advantage of it does not, by itself, make the story entirely false.
