Modern American Usage: A Guide, by Wilson Follett

A classic since its first edition in 1966, Modern American Usage has been called a book that "every literate American ought to read." Now fully revised and brought up-to-date, this one-volume course in good writing brims with helpful answers―large and small―for readers who want to use English clearly, naturally, and correctly.

Alphabetical for easy consulting (and full of cross-references), the book carries the reader to the entry that explains a troublesome word or phrase―and shows how to use or avoid it. Every page offers natural ways to avoid saying or writing the vague, the long-winded, the needlessly technical, and the hopelessly stale. With verve and eloquence, Erik Wensberg spears the empty words that clog clear thought―"impact," "frustrated," "basically," and many more―and offers us good English words that are definite and have more life.

Offering standards by which to judge language now and in the future, Modern American Usage takes account of a generation of changes in American idiom and of attempts to reform the use of pronouns, titles, and phrases to fit shifting ideals of social justice. All this it does with easy learning and with sympathy alike for the experienced writer and for those who come new to American English.

Review
Nobody has discussed these matters with greater lucidity and concision (another linguistic virtue) than Wilson Follett.... You cannot read Modern American Usage in one or two sittings: This is a handbook to be perused for pleasure as well as instruction a few pages at a time, to be savored for its common sense and its many fine positive and negative examples. And, of course, to be consulted as the need arises. -- The Wall Street Journal, John Simon

About the Author

Erik Wensberg has worked as an editor at Esquire and The New York Times Book Review, and has taught nonfiction writing at Columbia University.

Follett's Guide to Usage
By David Dunlap
As one who thinks it necessary to own every major English usage manual from Fowler on, I here state the firm opinion that Follett is the best of the reasonably contemporary examples and second only to Fowler. Follett is more erudite, more complete (not more comprehensive, I grant), and more analytical than the rest. (Yes, Bryan, this means you). For example, compare his treatment of the indefensible "in terms of" to any other.

Someone speaks here of "disagreeing" with Follett's remarks on prescriptivism. Well, if you're not a prescriptivist then you oughtn't be reading usage manuals, and if you are one yet still disagree, you'd better find arguments more persuasive than his.

Another critic says Follett isn't terribly useful as a quick

how-to guide. Well, true, but the genuine articles never are.

"A Guide" -- but not much of one
By Mike Brecher
A poor, incomplete and unwieldy reference. "Modern American Usage" fails to deal with many of the everyday issues people struggle with in their writing -- the list of omissions is long and varied -- and those that are included are sometimes addressed with a lack of thoroughness or clarity. Too often, and too irritatingly, entries merely redirect users to other headings, when the issue could easily have been resolved under the original entry-heading. Those involved in creating this edition seem not to appreciate that a little duplication goes a long way in making what is, first and foremost, a craftsperson's tool user-friendly.

The Rules: A Good Reference and Pleasant Browsing
By Anne Mills
This book is the classic American answer to Fowler, and isn't really very "modern" anymore. It was first published in 1966 (three years after Follett died: the manuscript was completed by Barzun) and then updated and revised in 1998 -- fifteen years gone by. Like Fowler's, this book focuses on the usage of individual words, arranged in alphabetical order, but also discusses broader topics. Very helpful as a reference, and delightful browsing. It is fiercely prescriptive in tone, but then that is what a usage guide is supposed to be.

The Other Side of Silence: A Guide to Christian Meditation, by Morton T. Kelsey

In his introduction, the author describes the need for this book: "More and more people...have turned toe Eastern ways of meditating in the hope of finding some discipline that the ordinary individual can follow. Much has been written about these Eastern disciplines. But neither the Western novices in Zen or Yoga or Transcendental Meditation or the more experienced writers about them seem to realize that there is a powerful and unique Christian method of meditation available to any ordinary person who wishes to use it. This Christian way way of meditating can bring may people a whole new vision of reality and new effectiveness in their living." To meet this need, the author, a nationally recognized theologian, psychologist, educator, priest and man of prayer has created a book which provides both a rationale and a method of Christian meditation. The book provides one simple way to encounter the Divine Lover. "This approach is particularly helpful for those who have doubts about the possibility, or the value, of meditation for whatever reason. It requires no great gifts...This is a practical manual for those who would like to try out this method of finding the encounter, learning what it is like and practicing it."

Morton has a strong grasp of Meditation. He also has respect for Eastern Religions.

This book covers much on introspection and inner silence. It tells how to connect with one's own soul. To heal the heart. To explore the mind and master it. It teaches how to use imagination and prayer to explore the spiritual world. and to connect with Higher Powers and God.

This is form of Christianity I respect. Reading it was a pleasure.

The Movie ending is better....!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
By Joseph A. Serrenti
The other day I stumbled into "A Patch of Blue " on TV. I couldn't stop watching it, and I rarely head for a tear-jerker. I was so impressed with the film, I had to read the book. The movie adaptation was right on the money, with a different ending. Usually changes in a book's origional ending spell doom, but this movie is a switch! The last chapter of the book is a wreck, almost like it was written by someone else. The author's attempt at a delusional Selena departs from the narration into a suddenly florid language, full of insight, with a vocab that she does not use with this character throughout the whole book. I reread the ending 3 times, and still had trouble establishing the imagery in my mind. And what a time to break down...right at the time when the only person who has helped you in your whole life needs your help. For God's sake..."Open your mouth Selina or Sleena...whatever"! Without, giving the ending away, to say the least....what a let down!!! Watch the movie. While not as sappy as a Disney ending, it still ties things up and lets Rose-ane get hers !!!

A window into another way of life
By A Customer
I read this book for my high school English class. After i had procrastinated the reading until the very last weekend of the assignment, i finally settled into the book. Fortunately, it was easy, fast reading. I felt the book was intrigueing and captivating from the very first page until the end. The story is a first person narrative of a strong, young blind girl's life. She has been terribly neglected, having been blinded as a child by her own prostitute mother. She knows only of her one room apartment, and what she's listened to on the radio. In the book, she finally has the oppurtunity to go outside of her dingy apartment. She meets a friend in the park, and discovers what friendship and love is. She realises what a sorry life she's been forced to live through her blindness. The story was beautiful, touching, and honest. The theme of the book was of tolerence. It must have been set in the 1950s or 1960s, and so the plot emphasises the prejudice between blacks and whites, rich and poor. I do feel that i missed much of the suspense of the plot because the cover of the book i used gave away a key to the story. I did not like the bluntness of the books ending. I felt that many conflicts had not been resolved, however, it was realistic. I think this is a story you should expose yourself to.

Peukert offers a stimulating interpretation that not only places Weimar in the history of twentieth-century Germany but also reveals it as an archetype of the ambivalences and pathologies of advanced industrial society.

From Publishers Weekly
Born out of national defeat in 1918, the Weimar Republic launched Germany on an experiment in modernity under the least propitious circumstances. In an outstanding scholarly study that is likely to spark controversy, late German historian Peukert ( Inside Nazi Germany ) claims that the distinctive national characteristics of German history and of Weimar do not all point in a direct line to the Nazi seizure of power in 1933. Weimar's fragile attempt at democracy, he contends, was destroyed by a steady retreat from political compromise and by a continuous shrinking of the material and economic base, which prevented the liberal government, with its welfare structure, from gaining real legitimacy in the eyes of the German people. Interpreting Weimar as a brief, headlong tour of the fateful choices made possible by the modern world, this rigorous history explores the paradox of a society that spawned avant-garde cultural breakthroughs amid bleak poverty and political breakdown.

From Library Journal
This relatively brief history appeared first in German in 1987, three years before the author's death. Now in a sound English translation, it offers a wide-ranging social, political, and economic analysis. While not arguing that the Weimar experiment in democracy was doomed to fail, Peukert ( Inside Nazi Germany , Yale, 1989) clearly suggests that a general "crisis of modernity" rendered a happy outcome most unlikely. Especially good at describing the era's economic problems and class struggles, he fails to do full justice to such social themes as gender and age conflict, which he introduces only to pass over too quickly. Based almost entirely on secondary works in German, the book contains occasional broad generalizations that, together with an overuse of the passive voice, result in imprecision. Nonetheless, it is well-crafted, sober, and succinct, well suited to its intended audience of undergraduate readers and the informed general public. -- James B. Street, Santa Cruz P.L., Cal.

From Kirkus Reviews
Peukert, who died in 1990 at age 39, also wrote Inside Nazi Germany: Conformity, Opposition and Racism in Everyday Life. This new book is not quite everyday life under the Weimar Republic, but it does shift the emphasis from the doings of a few old men--the military elite who handed the country over to Hitler--to the prevailing anguish among all classes of Germans during the 12 years the Republic survived. Peukert sums up this anguish as ``the crisis of classical modernity.'' He notes that, since 1870, Germany had already been subjected to an accelerated process of modernization: industrialization, urbanization, bureaucratization, rationalization of daily life. Dislocations that were mild and bearable under the prosperous empire became killers in the Weimar years, after military defeat and with two horrendous economic crises in ten years. Weimar, in short, was not something completely new in German history. It was more of the same under impossible conditions. Peukert offers new angles on the period, all designed to show that it wasn't some fatal flaw in the German character that produced Hitler, but a series of complex problems all striking at once. Demographics, for example: A baby boom in 1900-10 flooded the job market just at the start of the Depression, and the Nazis recruited heavily among these young unemployed. Peukert also points out surprising continuities between Weimar and what followed. Laws against abortion and homosexuality never came off the books in those supposedly freewheeling years. Women who were married weren't supposed to work, were even fired from civil-service jobs. Nazi race madness was anticipated by a concern for eugenics by both the right and the left, going back decades. Writing to amplify and correct other historians, Peukert is dense, allusive, and sometimes crabbed. This is definitely not Weimar for beginners, and perhaps is best read as part of Germany's process of Vergangenheitsbew„ltigung--coming to terms with the past. Or as a warning of how long stretches of hard times can bring out the worst in people. -- Copyright ©1992, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

A Concise History of 1918-1933
By Acute Observer
Detlev Peukert was a professor of modern history at the University of Essen. This book covers the history from the failed revolts of 1918 to the Enabling Act of 1933. The important dates are in the `Chronology' on pages 282 to 289. The defeat in WW I ended the monarchy but left the aristocracy (big landowners) and corporate owners in power. The Social Democrats, Liberals (middle class) and the Catholic Center Party contended for control of Germany. The government was influenced by the aristocracy and against ordinary workers and people, and the splinter parties. The former ruling class enabled the Nazis to gain power legally (p.280). The hyperinflation was a way to impoverish people who did not own productive property but only paper wealth. This hardship caused suicide rates to soar. The aristocracy used the Freikorps, SA, and the NSDAP to suppress popular political parties.

The military defeat of Germany caused the Kaiser to abdicate and Ludendorff to resign. A civilian government took power (p.28). The Social Democrats did not introduce democratic reforms or purge the aristocratic officer class (p.30); they did call for new elections and a new constitution (p.31). Armed groups moved against protesting workers (p.32). The Weimar Coalition was in power (p.33), it relied on the military and bureaucracy (p.34). Did proportional representation contribute to the collapse of the Republic (p.38)? The emergency powers of Article 48 gave the President sovereign authority (p.39). Listing basic rights did not deliver them (p.41). The Versailles Treaty is explained as the result of Germany's defeat (pp.42-46). The real problems were the existence of anti-republican elites in government and the army, and the loss of republican sentiments among the middle class (p.50). Chapter 3 discusses the Post-War Crisis. Since the Allies were in debt to America they needed reparations from Germany (p.53). France wanted to split up Germany (as it had been prior to 1866) [this probably would have prevented WW II] (p.57). Inflation was caused by the German government that printed paper money instead of raising taxes to pay for the war (pp.62-64). One problem was the counter-revolution and the anti-republican reaction it fostered. The Freikorps and other groups eventually led to the victory of the NSDAP. The Kapp putsch was defeated by a General Strike (p.69).

Part II begins by saying this history is not purely chronological, and we get essays on demographics (Chapter 4). Trade Unions had a right to partake in decisions affecting employees (Chapter 5). But `rationalization' created higher unemployment (p.117) with political consequences. The Big Corporations decided to attack parliamentary government (p.126). The "science" of eugenics was thought to create a perfect society (p.139). Part IV describes foreign policy and domestic politics. Inflation and falling prices for agriculture created dissatisfaction (p.234). The World Economic Crisis hit Germany hard (because of the previous hyperinflation) and this caused a rejection of the political system (Chapter 13). There was mass unemployment and misery (p.252). High unemployment led to street gangs (p.254). The Brüning Government ruled by decree to bypass Parliament (Chapter 14) for its reactionary policies (p.261). To gain mass support they allied with the NSDAP (p.267). This ruling class handed power to the Nazis (p.280), it wasn't a putsch. Peukert compared this to a nuclear power station when a sequence of critical events causes a meltdown (p.281).

An excellent, well-written, informative book for layman or professional
By Paul B. Dunlap
I completely disagree. with galwaygirl's review I am just an amateur student of history, with no considerable prior knowledge of this period or Germany in general, and I found Peukert's book very understandable, concise and informative. Yes, it is dense, as any detailed history book has to be to do justice to its subject. As a reader, I did find I had to stop periodically and work to consolidated my thoughts to retain comprehension, but of course that's to be expected. Bottom line, I learned alot, and did not lose patience with the writing, and I am not the most patient fellow on earth.

Also, it is correct that this book focuses alot on social-economic conditions, but its discussion of politics is by no means destitute. Perhaps the reviewer meant that Peukert doesn't discuss personal politics and party politics in minutia, which is true, but the discussion of general political trends, their causes and effects is excellent.

This is NOT Beowulf!
By Erwin Schrodinger
Robert Nye has rewritten the Beowulf saga into a nice little stand-alone fable, but it is so far from the original text that it is a disservice to new readers. Nye had his own idea of what the theme of Beowulf should be, but the original text does not support his theme, so Nye rewrote it until it did -- and then he crams the theme down the reader's throat as though it's the central point of the entire Beowulf saga. Nye's theme is that we should embrace our weaknesses and thereby make them our strengths (huh?), and he demonstrates this through Beowulf's nearsightedness and disproportionately short legs, neither of which are in the original text.
Nye's liberties with the original include making the Dane warrior Unferth a villain -- in the original, Unferth is at first jealous of Beowulf's courage until he sees it first-hand, at which point his jealousy turns to respect, and Beowulf respects him in return. In Nye's version Unferth is a treacherous villain throughout -- for example, in the original it is Grendel's mother who kills the king's friend Esher, but in Nye's version Unferth stabs him in the back. According to Nye, Unferth is then killed by Grendel's mother; in the original Unferth gives Beowulf his own sword to fight Grendel's mother, and this is the scene where Unferth and Beowulf become friends. Nye took a great supporting character and turned him into a cardboard villain.
I could go on listing ways in which Nye damages the saga, but I will instead cut to his most heinous crime -- Beowulf versus the dragon. In the original text, Beowulf gathers a band of his best warriors along with his friend Wiglaf to battle the dragon. When they see it, the warriors turn and run away in fear, and Beowulf attacks the dragon with only the loyal Wiglaf behind him. Beowulf succeeds at the cost of his own life, and dies at Wiglaf's side. In Nye's version, Beowulf is a part-time beekeeper, and he kills the dragon by having a bag of bees fly down its throat and sting it to death from the inside (I'm not making this up). There is no battle. Beowulf is never injured. Beowulf then simply dies on the mountain for no apparent reason other than his age.
I bought this book to read to my kids, but there is no way I will ever read it to them. It is a very easy read -- Nye tells a lively little tale, and his idea of using bees to kill the dragon is smoothly set up throughout the story -- but the major points of this so-called "new telling" are all Nye's, and run counter to the themes in the original. Anyone who reads this and thinks they've read Beowulf is VERY sorely mistaken, and their mistake will be immediately obvious to anyone who is familiar with the original text.

As dreadful as Grendel himself
By Wellington
Rather than offering my own opinion of this book, I will give you a few brief quotations describing the major characters and allow you to decide for yourself if this book is worth reading. Author Robert Nye describes the character of Beowulf as "weak and sickly" in his youth and "below average size" as an adult. He also describes Beowulf as "short sighted." He claims that Beowulf "admits to his weaknesses" and is "not given to boasting." This begs the question: what Beowulf is Nye talking about? The real Beowulf, the one that we know from the epic 7th century poem, was none of these things. We are told that he was neither small nor weak, but rather he possessed the strength of 30 men ("thirty men's might in the grip of his hand").This is how he was able to overpower his adversary, the demon Grendel, when no other man could challenge Grendel. The original Beowulf boasted quite often. Apparently, Robert Nye has his own idea of how a "hero" should behave. Instead of arrogance in Beowulf we see humility when he says, "He was a better swimmer than I" in reference to his dramatic swimming race against Breca. The problem here is that Beowulf did not lose this race with Breca. He won! But Nye's Beowulf cannot be all-powerful and still be humble, meek and peace-loving. We know from the original story that Beowulf cut off Grendel's head after he was dead, so he could offer it to the Danes as a trophy. This action was apparently too harsh for Nye. Instead, he tells us that Beowulf cut off Grendel's head in self-defense after Grendel momentarily came back from the dead!

The character of Unferth has also been dramatically altered. He is portrayed as both pathetic and evil, a drunkard full of contempt for Beowulf and his people. As such, his words carry no weight and he really serves no purpose in the story. The real Unferth was an insecure man, who was desperately afraid of Beowulf gaining more glory than him. But there is no evidence in the poem that he was evil or that he hated his own people.

The depiction of Grendel's mother in this book is downright laughable. Nye tells us that she has "red lips" and "hanging breasts." Furthermore, "she had eyes in her breasts." We are never told why she needs eyes in her breasts, but I guess the author just liked this visual.

Grendel's mother is also described as the "wife of Cain." According to Nye, Cain had sex with Grendel's mother (an evil serpent) and the resulting offspring was the hideous creature Grendel. To someone unfamiliar with the poem, this might seem logical. But this is where Robert Nye really misses the point (or chooses to ignore the point). Grendel is a descendant of Cain - this much is true. But Grendel's evil nature did not arise because of a sinful union between Cain and his mother. Cain was already sinful after killing his brother and then being cast out by God. As a result, his offspring were evil and - over thousands of years - slowly became monstrous. This happened because Cain and his offspring were separated from God.

It shouldn't be surprising, however, that Nye fails to address this point. As previous reviewers have already stated, Nye chooses to ignore the Christian basis of the poem. His Beowulf has no relationship with God. In the poem, we know that Beowulf draws strength and inspiration from God, and he thanks God for his successes in battle ("the deadly struggle at the start would have ended, if God had not watched over me") Instead, Nye tells us that "Beowulf's best weapon was himself. He put all his faith in that." Beowulf believed in himself fully and therefore had no need for God - according to Mr. Nye. Let's not forget that this story is really about the battle between good and evil, Beowulf (God) versus Grendel (Satan). The poem tells us that Grendel came from Hell, and that he was an "enemy of God," who "waged war against God." Regarding Beowulf, the poem tells us that "Holy God has sent him to help our people."

If you choose to read this book you will notice that Mr. Nye wisely includes a disclaimer: "This is an interpretation, not a translation." Perhaps this is how he justifies changing the original story to such an extent that the characters are unrecognizable. His book, therefore, is not an interpretation of the original story but an alteration of it. Instead of bringing honor to the poem, he dishonors it.

There's nothing wrong with Mr. Nye writing a story about a humble, unimpressive man who manages to overcome his weaknesses. He just shouldn't have named him Beowulf.

Fun. But wildly dissimilar.
By Danton
In many ways, this Beowulf is a lot of fun for kids. The writing is direct and clear (although there are plenty of vocabulary stretchers). The action is fun. Beowulf's heroism is unquestionable.

But, I don't understand why one would publish a Beowulf retelling and stay just close enough to the original to be confusing (as opposed to John Gardner's wonderful Grendel, which told the story from the monster's perspective). The most disturbing divergence was making Unferth a petty bad guy in enamored of evil. In doing so, Nye sacrifices much of the nobility of the original.

I don't know if there are other kid-friendly tellings of this story. But, I would look for one of those, first.

Richard of St. Victor: The Book of the Patriarchs, The Mystical Ark, Book Three of the Trinity (Classics of Western Spirituality), by Rich

One of the great mystics of the Christian Tradition, Richard is the link between the early tradition of Pseudo-Dionysius and the great mystical awakening in Medieval Europe. For his genius in bringing together both the Latin and Greek Traditions all contemplatives owe him a great debt. Born in twelfth century Scotland, he joined the Abbey of St. Victor in Paris where he became Superior and Prior.

The Twelve Patriarchs (or Benjamin Minor) is his preparation of the soul for contemplation. The framework is a scriptural allegory based on the story of Jacob. Richard uses the meaning of the names and the elements of the story to illustrate a unified view of the person and the relationship between contemplation and action. His Mystical Ark ( or Benjamin Major) completes this study.

In his Book Three of the Trinity we see Richard's doctrinal basis for the spiritual conclusions of his earlier work. Richard can teach us about the discipline and the dangers of the mystical quest. He can enlighten us concerning the relevance of symbols and symbolic structures as modes of communication.

Jean Chatillon, of the University of Paris, who wrote the preface, is the world's Victorine scholar.

A FASCINATING COLLECTION OF THE WRITINGS FROM A 12TH CENTURY MYSTICAL THEOLOGIAN
By Steven H Propp
Richard of Saint Victor (died 1173) was a mystical theologian, and the prior of the Augustinian Abbey of Saint Victor in Paris from 1162 until his death. He is the link between the early tradition of Pseudo-Dionysius and the later mystical awakening in Medieval Europe.

He suggests that "many things, even those that have been written concerning the torments of evil persons must be interpreted mystically. Similarly, many things concerning goods of the future life, although described corporally, must be understood simply." (Pg. 70-71) He says that "Certainly God made even those parts of the body that we call shameful. However, no one other than you made the shameful things of the heart." (Pg. 104)

He argues that "You must know the invisible things of your own spirit before you can be capable of knowing the invisible things of God. If you are not able to know yourself, how do you have the boldness to grasp at those things which are above you?" (Pg. 129) He adds, "we are able to separate into three stages that knowledge of God which one is able to possess in this life, and according to the triple difference of stages we are able to divide the heavens by three inasmuch as God is seen one way by faith, is known another way by reason, and is discerned another way by means of contemplation." (Pg. 132)

He suggests that concerning divine instructions, "it should be noted that we ought to understand some things simply and seek nothing in them according to the mystical sense, while some things ought to be employed according to the literal sense, and yet are capable of representing something according to the mystical sense." (Pg. 194) An example is the Trinity, "which you will discover are not only incomprehensible but even discordant to human reason." (Pg. 293)

Richard is a Medieval writer who is well worth "discovering," and this is a very attractive collection of his writings.

Fascinating Medieval Exegesis
By Ryan S. Swanson
Richard of St Victor was a great thinker and traveller on the mystical path. The works contained in this volume provide a fascinating glimpse onto the uses of scriptural allegory as Richard unites the Latin and Greek mystical traditions into a synthesis all his own. He was very influential for those who followed him. The student of medieval mysticism will find this book a delight.

Amazon.com Review
The United States was a new republic in 1817. The generation of its original revolutionaries was fast dying; a second war with Great Britain had recently been settled; and expansionism was the mood of the day. The "children of the founders," as Carol Sheriff calls this first 19th-century American generation, sought to make its mark with engineering projects that would further national growth and prove to Europe that the new nation "played a leading role in God's plan to improve the earthly world." It did so in grand style with the Erie Canal, a huge waterway that linked Atlantic seaports with the Great Lakes. Sheriff's vigorous account of the canal's conception and building makes for an epic story and fascinating reading.

From Publishers Weekly
As an early-19th-century public works project, the Erie Canal dwarfed all others in terms of cost, size and imagination. By connecting Buffalo to Albany, the canal opened a waterway between New York City and the Great Lakes, dramatically transforming U.S. commerce and industry. In this work, which began as a dissertation, Sheriff, who teaches history at William and Mary, does an effective job of examining the impact of improved transportation on various segments of society: ditchdiggers, farmers, merchants, canal boat captains, politicians, housewives and missionaries. Most interesting is her finding that many of the motifs that define our current age began with the creation of the canal. From family values to government entitlements, and from government deficits to environmental destruction, today's issues seem to be reflected in this antebellum history. Illustrations not seen by PW.

From Library Journal
Completed in 1825 and enlarged between 1836 and 1862 at the initial cost of $7 million, the Erie Canal not only created an economic revolution in the region but fostered new and unique communities made up of entrepreneurs, canal workers, and farmers. Utilizing a variety of primary resources, but especially the Canal Board Papers, Sheriff (history, College of William and Mary) relates the social history of those who lived, worked, and traveled the Erie Canal before the Civil War. This previously untold story is laced with accounts by businessmen who saw the canal as opportunity, immigrant laborers looking for steady work, and farmers who transported their produce by canal boat. Although all of these groups relayed their complaints, claims, and concerns to the Canal Board, we do not know the responses they received. Still, the issues raised tell a great deal about the local impact of the Erie Canal, and herein lies the strength of the book. Thoughtful and reflective, this an excellent example of the use of available primary resources in writing history. Recommended for academic and larger public libraries.?Boyd Childress, Auburn Univ. Impressive book about an impressive public work
By Rocco Dormarunno
For too many people, the Erie Canal was simply an artificial waterway that opened the American west (back then) to the Atlantic, and, in the process made New York City a business entrepot. Carol Sheriff, in her book, "The Artificial River: The Erie Canal and the Paradox of Progress, 1817-1862" digs a lot deeper to reveal the complexities of "Clinton's Big Ditch". There were the engineering problems to be surmounted. There were financial considerations. There were the legal knots that plagued the Canal Commission. The relationship--even the definitions--of nature, art and technology became blurred to so many people.

But what I came away with the most was the utter chaos and disturbance the building and maintenance of the canal created. This was not a harmonious public work, dug by noble laborers, which enriched the lives and purses of the enitre populace. Instead, as Professor Sheriff demonstrates, there was a great deal of strife between the canal builders and the local residents. The wealth went to the few, and the builders got nothing--not even praise or thanks. This, in turn, created a new class of anonymous laborers which was counterpoint to the ideals of Republicanism. And, as Sheriff points out, DeWitt Clinton would have shook his head in disbelief, had he known this would have happened.

As a whole, however, "The Artificial River" reminds us of the tremendous efforts that went into the making of the Erie Canal. And equally impressive, is the tremendous effort Professor Sheriff put into this well-researched and quickly paced book.

I have only just begun so my assessment is not accurate yet. We recently rode on the Sam Patch boat on the Erie Canal and had a narration tour. We were on a motor coach tour of Niagara Falls and this Canal ride was one of the highlights of our tour! They passed this book around and recommended it as a good source of information.
