Great overview of an important period in the history of Western thought

Volume 4 of Frederick Copleston's "A History of Philosophy" presents a detailed overview of a most important period in the history of philosophy. It was during this time, beginning with Descartes, that most of the major schools of modern thought had their origin. In discussing this period, Copleston provides a detailed description and analysis of the philosophy of Descartes, Spinoza, and Leibniz. He also provides an excellent overview of the thought of Pascal and Malebranche. His discussion of Descartes' and Leibniz's ontological arguments (quite different from each other) is excellent and is as clear an exposition of these arguments as any I have read. Unlike Voltaire's "Candide," which simply caricatures the argument, Copleston's explication of Leibniz's best possible world theodicy shows a great deal of insight into what Leibniz was really arguing. This volume will amply reward the reader who is willing to put sufficient time and effort into studying its material.
